Introduction 4
Introduction I first came out in 2011, right when I started high school, 10 years later I’ve been growing strong. I also recently came out as genderfluid a year ago. I’m very thankful for my incredibly supportive family and friends. As the world has become very polarizing, I’ve seen a lot of progress towards LGBT equality but also seeing a wave of hate towards LGBT rising at the same time. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like for children growing up right now. I hope How Sammy Came Out will be one of many voices working to make the world a little less scary for LGBT children and maybe even help parents understand how their child might feel. 5
The Big Idea Sammy, the main character, is afraid of coming out, fearing their peers will mock them. However, bottling in who they are hurts their mental health. Sammy finds coming out to supportive, loving people is important and learns to be proud of who they are. Company Spirit Hopefully this book will help reach out to children who don’t know yet or too scared to tell. There are people out there who will love and accept you, and that’s what Sammy’s story is all about. I hope this also makes children raised in homophobic households learn that being LGBT isn’t a bad thing and LGBT kids/people like play games, make things, and have fun just like them. 6
Sammy Early concept art (they/them) Sammy is a goodhearted, friendly fellow who acts like any other kid, playing video games, making drawings, using their imagination. Sammy used to be rather withdrawn but after coming out, Sammy has a bright and proud personality. Sammy likes to dress up in both masculine and feminine clothing. Sammy’s favorite food is chocolate dipped strawberries and stringy cheese sticks (not together). 7
Roberta, questioning, (she/her) Roberta is Sammy’s one of best friends. She is a bit of a drama queen, suitable since she’s determined to star in the school play. She likes bugs, magic shows, playing dress up, and chocolate chip oatmeal. 8
Craig, bi (he/him) Craig is Sammy’s other best friend. He is a little brash and stubborn, but will help his friends if they’re in need. He’s also a bit of a prankster and loves playing jokes on other kids in his class. His favorite food is fish sticks. 9
Sammy’s Mom, straight, (she/her) Sammy’s Mom is kind hearted and gentle. She often worries about her child and is sometimes a bit overprotective. If Sammy given a hard time, she will rage into full mama bear mode to protect her child. 10
Sammy’s Dad, straight, (he/him) Sammy’s Dad is very chill and laid back. He loves to spend time with Sammy and take him out for pizza. He has a rather strange sense of humor that only he seems to understand. 11

Tone of Voice The tone of voice in copywriting should be friendly, approachable, and welcoming. It should be able to reasonate with kids, simple but still smart and respectful. It should NEVER be condescending, that is the downfall of many children’s media. Sammy and Friends should make kids feel comfortable but still a sense of magic. It can even feel nostalgic to adults! 23

Conclusion 38
I hope How Sammy Came Out can help LGBT children be happy with who they are and help straight children learn that LGBT children are just like them. Sammy is a child too, but not a human to keep it universal among children of all races. 39
