This year has been nothing short of incredible. No one in our creative community could have predicted this global pandemic. Nor could they have foreseen how it would impact so many industries, including our own. But our strength will always be found within our creative spirit. It makes us stand apart—and strong. We continue to harness it in the face of every challenging strategy, client request, and now, crisis. While the 2020 CSCA Creative Best and 50th anniversary are not what we envisioned, there is still much to celebrate. We continue to leave our mark on the culture of Columbus, making it a beacon of creative influence across the world. This pandemic will end and we will endure—and come out even stronger. We look forward to seeing you in 2021. 003 004 006 007 008 010 012 014 016 021 025 028 030 034 038 041 045 048 052 055 058 060 064 068 072 075 078 081 084 087 091 094 Letter from the Presidents 2020 Year in Review CSCA 2020 Staff Volunteers of the Year The Ed Grauer Award Judges Best of Show Judge’s Choice Animation Campaign Copywriting Digital Ad Environmental Identity Systems Illustration Interactive Logo Motion Packaging Photography Lifestyle Photography Product Print Long Form The Greater Good Video Long Form Student Campaign Student Digital Student Identity Student Illustration Student Photography Student Print Student Video Creative Best Partners 1 Creative Best 2020

Thank you for being a part of the 50th year of the Columbus Society of Communicating Arts (CSCA)—and what a year it’s been. Established in 1970, CSCA is an independent nonprofit organization founded with the intent to foster, advocate for, and elevate the art and science of communications. At this point, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the brick on the cover. Bricks are an inherently simple, known object. In the context of a wall, a brick becomes part of something bigger than itself. Many walls become a village. In a hand, a brick becomes a tool of dissent. Both metaphors apply here. Our June guest speaker, Oscar Fernández, spoke of legacy: legacy is the story we leave behind, and within this book, we’ve encapsulated a small part of the story of 2020. These are challenging times for all of us, and yet in our reflection over this year we find overwhelming gratitude. We have immense gratitude to all who came before us—the countless leaders, educators, volunteers, and sponsors, who through their time, talent, and generosity have shaped this organization. We are grateful for you. Congratulations to all of you for being proud of your work, whether or not you received an award. Creative Best and CSCA as a whole is about building this extraordinary village, being inspired by our work, and pursuing our passions and purpose. It has been an honor to be your leaders for this year. We are grateful for the officers who supported the structure of our organization. We are grateful for the board members and past presidents who helped us and provided invaluable guidance throughout the year. We are grateful for the volunteers who mentored students, designed artwork, wrote copy, shared our posts, and took photos. And we are grateful for our sponsors who donated time, money, services, swag, raffle prizes, and more. We are grateful for our guest speakers—we welcomed creative directors; a type designer; an illustrator; a writer; two educators/practitioners; a diversity, equity, and inclusion specialist; and several mental and behavioral health professionals. One resounding theme emerged from this year’s roster of guest speakers: bravery. Bravery to break the rules. Bravery to fight for big ideas. Bravery to change your life course by pivoting careers or moving to a different city, state, or country. Bravery of tenacity. Bravery to face systemic racism in our own industry. Bravery to face ourselves and our insecurities. Bravery to seek help. Bravery to be angry, and to speak out. All of this is worth fighting for. This is a call to action—we are accountable for our own legacy. When we see the world is not as we want it to be, it’s our responsibility to dissent, loudly and visibly. We are here to push the world in the direction we want it to go. This book is dedicated to all those who dare. Stay brave, Columbus. Jeremy Rosario & Suzy Sprague 3 Creative Best 2020

CSCA is a 100% volunteer-run organization. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of each of our volunteers. Every year there are a few fantastic people who step up and give their time, allowing CSCA to do great things. This year we simply could not have accomplished all we have without the help of these people. Kyle Asperger As VP of Education, Kyle’s key contribution is the opportunity for meaningful connection between student and professional. Resourceful and determined, Kyle is a great event planner and moderator. Events he brought new energy to this year include: a discussion panel on how to interview in a pandemic; arranging dozens of mentors for the annual portfolio review; and creating a specialization-oriented Agency Hop with best-in-class Columbus agencies. Kendra Bosse If you’ve liked a post or had a question answered on social media this year, it’s because of Kendra’s hard work. As the Co-VP of Social Media alongside Katelyn Ratajczak, Kendra is the always-on eyes and ears of CSCA. She is a master of craft in writing, design, and motion graphics. Her enthusiasm and commitment extend beyond her role: she shared some of her design tricks at our animation workshop, and illustrated this year’s Creative Best giveaway! Danielle Scott Back when we had in-person events, Danielle was always the first smiling face you would see upon arrival. As the VP of Events, Danielle is exceptionally organized, enthusiastic, and warm. Danielle did an incredible job pioneering a brand new type of event for this year: workshops taught by local talent, free to our members. She is a constant advocate for CSCA and her creativity, optimism, and collaboration make CSCA better for all. 7 Creative Best 2020

The Ed Grauer Award, named for one of the founders of CSCA, is our organization’s highest recognition of those who demonstrate an ongoing commitment of service and support to CSCA’s mission and members. Established in 1979, The Ed Grauer Award has been awarded to a range of individuals including designers, publishers, writers, educators, and innovators. This year we are proud to recognize 2004 CSCA President, beloved professor, and dear friend, Oscar Fernández. Oscar credits studying with luminaries like Paul Rand for the lesson that good design makes an incredible impact. Over the course of his more than 40-year career, Oscar has been paying forward the lessons of past masters by touching the lives of generations of designers who, like him, believe in the transformational impact of their work. In addition to teaching at the University of Cincinnati, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbus College of Art and Design, Maine College of Art, Ohio State University, and Montana State University, Oscar has held design directorships at international for-profit and non-profit institutions, including Fitch Worldwide and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Among his many design awards and scholarly work are recognitions in Graphis, Print, AIGA Annuals, and SEGD. In 2011, the International Institute for Information Design awarded his design team Best in Category for Healthcare Design for the universal healthcare symbol set Hablamos Juntos (We Speak Together). 8 Education MFA in Graphic Design Yale University, 1976 BS in Art Lamar University, 1973 Creative Best 2020

“Oscar is a local design icon, educator, and type historian who deserves to be recognized by our organization for his dynamic presence in our community and his willingness to share both his time and design knowledge. He not only meets the criteria of this prestigious award… it was almost written for him.” Terri and Brian Deep “Oscar is held in high regard by many, but by none more than me. Oscar has influenced and educated many who have gone on to leave their mark, and who have subsequently influenced and educated others as well.” Tim Smith To learn more about Oscar watch his June 18, 2020 CSCA guest lecture at vimeo.com/thecsca, available free to the public. GUSTAVO PRATT Owner & Chief Creative Officer of Asterisco HC Mexico City, Mexico Gustavo is a creative and ideation leader who owns Asterisco Healthcare Communications, a pharma advertising agency with seven years in the market, recognized as one of the most innovative and creative pharma agencies in the country. CYNTHIA KRANTZ President at Mezzo Creative LLC Cleveland, Ohio Cynthia is a marketing maven who launched Mezzo Creative LLC, a boutique branding and marketing agency that specializes in content creation, digital, and social media for small to mid-sized companies. This year the judging process was redesigned to be entirely virtual. While the medium was very different, the process remained much the same. Each judge had a week on their own to review each of the 250+ entries and assign point values. At the end of the week, we arranged a video call to then discuss the top-scored entries in detail— rearranging, debating, and finally awarding the category winners. From all of the winning entries, each of the judges chose a personal favorite as their Judge’s Choice Award. PETER JOHN COMBER Creative Strategist & CEO at Atstrat Milan, Italy Peter is an expert in applied creativity who has created hundreds of national and international advertising campaigns for automobiles, spirits, banks, biscuits, computers, fashion brands, industrial machinery, confectionary, B2B services, and a great many pharmaceutical products. JUDGE’S CHOICE AWARD GUSTAVO PRATT JUDGE’S CHOICE AWARD CYNTHIA KRANTZ Sagul Ali Alaffia Brand Identity // Student: Identity This student is commended for creating brandbook MAGIC—the perfect culmination of all of her ideas, strategic approach, creativity, and art. With every page that you turn, you can see the student’s understanding of the product and where it comes from, passion for ethics, cultural awareness, and dedication to making a difference in the world. You sense the goodwill, the inspiration, and, above all, the love of helping people and their communities. The intent is clearly to do something beautiful that will change people’s lives, and all who hold this brand book can see it. See project on page 79. Hope Bruggeman Airbnb Posters // Student: Illustration The Airbnb poster series invites the viewer to travel to well-known places in a unique way. The imagery reinvigorates famous icons and skylines through the literal lenses of cameras typical of the featured city. The colors, pulling from the country’s flags, effectively draw the eye to key landmarks. The even line weights, thoughtful backgrounds, and copy to this campaign encourage the viewer to travel the globe. JUDGE’S CHOICE AWARD PETER JOHN COMBER Sidney Gale Duo // Student: Video Duo is an animated video that tells a simple story about diversity, antagonism, and how harmonious relationships can create a richer future. Duo succeeds through symbolism, minimalism, and warmth. All the scenes contain just two colours and very few objects, but the use of grainy pencil lines and a subtle, flowing background texture manage to provide just enough depth and detail to keep the eye interested. The playful characterization and animation of the two protagonists capture the attention and the imagination, also because their interactions are wordless. The absence of dialogue and the simple human truth at the heart of this video make Duo a piece of creativity that can communicate effectively all around the world. See project on page 93. 15 Creative Best 2020

PROJECT AREA: TYPOGRAPHY • ACTIVITY 2 Did You Know? MAKE YOUR OWN LETTER Just as spoken languages have their own unique sounds and styles, visual languages have their own images. A good example of visual language is font. Each font has its own, unique visual style. A font is specifically chosen, with intention, because its visual language is the best match for the message. Leading is the amount of space between lines of text. The term comes from the time typesetters would place actual strips of lead on their printing presses to separate each line of print. WHAT TO DO Estimated time: 1 hour Create your own letter in the style of an existing typeface by following these steps: 1. Type out the alphabet on the computer using word processing or design software. Include capital and small letters, and make them large enough so you can get a good look at the letters’ shapes. Handwriting won’t work for this, only because when we write letters, the forms typically are not very consistent. 2. Observe each letter’s anatomy—the terminals, ascenders, descenders, etc. Identify if the font is serif or sans serif. Consider how each letterform fits within the same visual system of that typeface. 3. Trace or free-hand draw a combination of two letters from that font to create an imaginary new letter. Experiment until the letter you create looks as if it belongs within the visual language of the existing font. 4. Make a large printout of the alphabet in the font you chose and place your new letter alongside it. Does it look as if it could be a real letter? 5. Include the alphabet and your new letter in your portfolio. Student Example: abcdefghijklmnop qr stuvwxyz More Challenges Look for good examples of different typefaces in a magazine. Identify which letters are serif and which are sans serifs. How is each used? How many different styles of the same letter can you find? Share what you learn with your project helper. terminal ascender fluffy fluffy serif terminal ascender sans serif descender AWARD OF MERIT PRINT LONG FORM Brian Deep 4-H Seeing Through Graphic Design descender Graphic Designer Brian Deep Author Sarah Doughty Curriculum Manager Jane Wright Content Contributor Brian Deep Editors 12 SEEING THROUGH GRAPHIC DESIGN ACTIVITY 2 SEEING THROUGH GRAPHIC DESIGN 13 Stacy Cochran, Susie Young 63 Photo: Brian Deep Creative Best 2020
