Reportedly, on August 8 patrol units responded due to a disturbance on Franklin Avenue involving several youths, and when the Patrol Officers arrived, they detained and identified four different individuals on the scene who were involved in the disturbance. Rogers Executive Secretary-Treasurer ity Council Vice President Patrick Keefe is pleased to announce his campaign has been endorsed by the Ironworkers Local 7. The Ironworkers have endorsed City Council Vice President Keefe for the last two elections. “I am excited and grateful of the support from Local 7. Many Revere residents are members of the Laborers union and realize their endorsement is a show of support to the values I have shown throughout my time in office as City Councillor.” RBC Business Award goes to Settipane Insurance their own property located on Broadway. They have accomplished this by filling the planter in front of the office chock-full of brightly colored and varied plants. There are pink, purple and white petunias, white hydrangeas, scarlet begonias and grasses. The end result of this combination is a lovely profusion of plantings. In addition, the property in front of the office is kept in immaculate condition, and this contributes to the appearance of the location. The office staff, Ivelisse Garcia and Jannette Lopez, see to the daily care of the planter, a task that takes them about a half hour each day. The effort that has been displayed here is apparent to all and is proof that one does not need a great amount of property to help make Revere beautiful. RBC commends Richard Settipane and his staff for contributing to the beautification of Revere and encourages all Revere businesses to do the same. Patrick Keefe City Council Vice President

THE REVERE ADVOCATE - Friday, August 16, 2019 Page 3 National Grid petitions for underground conduits met with City Council resistance Councillors express frustration with utility company By Alexis Mikulski N ational Grid petitioned in front of the City Council to install underground conduits on Ward Street, during the Zoning SubCommittee meeting on July 29. Mike Cordima, a representative from National Grid Electric, explained why these artificial channels are so necessary for the area. “Well, we found this petition back in the 90’s, when 175 Ward St. was built. The cables were buried and came right off of the pole, did a sweep and then were buried back into the ground,” he said. “We’ve had problems over the last few years with cable faults.” According to Cordima, these underground conduits will not disturb residents or wreak havoc on the land near Ward Street during this process. “This conduit will be from the pole onto the property,” said Cordima. “There will be no sidewalk or pavement disruption at all. It will run into a handhole and continue on to the custom transformers.” Currently, this is not affecting the building located at 175 Ward St., a multistory apartment complex. Cordima said that during the operation they will take a planned power outage to move and replace all of the underground cables. “There’s a program going on for all of this direct buried cable that’s been installed for the last 20-odd-years,” he said. “They’re replacing this.” Ward 2 Councillor Ira Novoselsky, who has been outspoken against National Grid in the past, expressed his concern over this cable process. “Nothing against you, but National Grid should be ashamed of themselves to have to wait this long to change temporary cables,” he said. “You’re only the messenger, but I’m not a big supporter of National Grid because they haven’t done much for us. I have streets that are all cut up because they never came back to repair them,” said Novoselsky. “Sidewalks are terrible – all over North Shore Road down to the Revere Beach Parkway – totally disappointed with them. You can give a message to whoever you want, and if they ever come in for anything new for themselves, I will not vote for them,” he said. Novoselsky explained that the only reason this particular motion has his favor is to protect residents of Revere. “I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt tonight because it’s dealing with a customer. But because they just come in and change their gas lines, that’s for their benefit and not for our benefit, just to let you know.” City Council President Arthur Guinasso agreed with the rest of the City Council by saying their primary goal is to benefit members of the area, and the importance of providing the community with the best quality of life. Ward 1 Councillor Joanne McKenna, who has also been a frequent critic of National Grid, expressed her hesitation on the petition. “I, too, will not vote for anything that National Grid will come forward with because it has been horrible for my Ward as well,” she said. “However, I will honor the Ward Councillor tonight and I’ll do whatever he wants to do.” After deciding it would be irresponsible to rule against a malfunctioning cable, members of the Zoning Sub-Committee voted for the petition to be forwarded to the full City Council with a favorable recommendation. THE REVERE ADVOCATE - Friday, August 16, 2019 Page 5 Revere Community School Awarded a Grant by the Foundation Trust R EVERE - The Revere Community School, which serves Revere and surrounding communities, received a $16,624 grant from The Foundation Trust to support its 2019-2020 initiatives addressing the learning needs and advancing the life prospects of immigrant and refugee adults and youth who are trying to build a new life after experiencing trauma, violence and other forms of life adversity. This is the first grant the Revere Community School has received from The Foundation Trust, a private operating foundation that supports the ongoing work of small to medium-sized nonprofit organizations that provide vital services to under-resourced populations in the Greater Boston area. Fatou Drammeh, Coordinator at the Revere Community School said “we are honored to be among the first round of grantees from the Foundation Trust to strengthen our program and increase our impact in the community. This grant will help us support more individuals by addressing language barriers and skill building for daily life and employment and support for families in Revere. At the Revere Community School, we believe that it is important to provide an array of support services if we are to properly support immigrants to be self-sufficient and lead successful lives in the United States.” The grant from the Foundation Trust will enable the Revere Community School to support low or moderateincome Revere parents and high school students to participate in ESOL courses and/ or continue their learning to improve their academic and personal situations. The program anticipates providing scholarships to 80 individuals over two years. The scholarship program will help to ensure the quality of our program by reducing the “dropout” rate – in this case, the adult learners and youth who do not enroll or who stop coming to class because they cannot afford it. Dr. Joseph Spinazzola, Executive Director of the Foundation Trust said “the Revere Community School is doing tremendous work to elevate and empower high-risk communities in Revere. The Foundation Trust is proud to offer this grant to help them advance educational and employment opportunities for diverse immigrants.” The Foundation Trust funding will also help 80 low-income families and seniors (40 per year) purchase a computer after completing 15 hours of free computer training so that they can do homework, find jobs and connect with loved ones. A free citizenship classes will also be available to up to 60 individuals planning on taking the citizenship exam in the next 12 months. A.B.C. THE REVERE ADVOCATE - Friday, August 16, 2019 Page 9 ~ Councillor’s Corner ~ At-Large candidate Richard Ireton F By Alexis Mikulski or this week’s “Councillor’s Corner,” Councillor-at-Large candidate Richard Ireton is featured. Currently there are 14 candidates running for this position. Richard has been a lifelong resident of Revere who has had a very successful career as an engineer. He hopes to create a better growth plan for the city, support all city services and focus in on crime in the community. Find out more about him below! Q: What is your hometown? A: Revere. I grew up in what’s known as Patriots Parkway, or West Revere. Q: What is your education background? A: I graduated from Revere high school in 1975, and attended Suffolk University from 1994–1998. Q: Why do you want to be a member of Revere City Council? A: I have always wanted to serve my community; I have been involved with local government for 25 years. The main reason that I am running for city councilor-at-large is because of the significant growth in the city over the past several years, and the lack of attention being paid to upgrading our infrastructure. I am not against progress, and being in the technology field you learn to be prepared for progress, but what I’ve seen is a lot of new development come on the line that has put a burden on city services, such as the police, fire, and schools. Q: What is your biggest accomplishment? A: My career. I started in technology prior to people knowing what a website was, way back in the early 90’s. I have taken that career from building websites to building platforms for places like Dell, IBM, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Safari. Privately my greatest accomplishment is my family; my sisters, nephews and rest of my family are the most important aspect of my life. Q: What is the biggest issue the city is currently facing? A: I think we need to take a look at crime. We can talk about tax rates and uncontrolled growth all we want, but ultimately people want to feel safe. The issues we’ve been having recently with the shootings in Revere, and a home invasion right down the street from me, we need to support the people Enjoy Everett’s Unique Steak House Richard Ireton that protect us, and crime is a major issue. Q: Do you have a proposed solution for this? A: There has been a lot of finger pointing, but we need to stop the finger pointing in regards to crime in the city, and support the people that fight the crime. We need to give them what they need to fight it and let them do their job. Q: What is something people may not know about you? A: I don’t think a lot of people know what my career has been about. Q: What is your favorite place you’ve ever visited and why? A: Maine and New Hampshire. I mean … it’s New England. When I need to get away and disconnect from everything, I go north. The lakes region helps me settle down and find peace of mind up there. Q: What makes Revere such a great place to live? A: Revere is a perfectly situated community between the North and Boston. We’re right on the water and have an incredible value to being located where we are. Q: What is the best way for the public to contact you? A: You can email me at richieireton@comcast.net, call me or even show up at my house. We have a lot of very qualified candidates that are running in this election for councilor-at-large, and that makes it a voter’s election. They have a lot of people to choose from and they really need to do their homework. Very seldom do we have such a large field of qualified candidates running for office. Q: Anything else you want people to know? A: I am having a meet and greet this Sunday, August 18 at 9 a.m. Come to me, ask me the questions you want to ask, and if I don’t have answers I’ll do the research and find you the best answer I can. The East Boston Knights, who hold the second-best overall record at 22-9, were the other squad receiving a bye in the opening round. Seeds 3-6 squared off in best-of-three, opening round battles this week. The thirdseeded Charlestown Townies, winners of the Ted Williams Division, and the No. 6 Brighton Black Sox, who defeated the Al Thomas Athletics, 7-6, on Monday, faced off in one series. Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded McKay Club Beacons took on the No. 5 Stoneham Sabers in the other first-rounder. Fittingly, Revere ace Jon Shepard had the honor of starting the regular-season finale at East Boston, and he didn’t disappoint in his complete-game effort. Shepard gave up just two hits, allowed one walk and fanned seven to cap a 9-0 season. The offense supplied him with a quick 2-0 lead in the S LANDSCAPE & MASONRY CO. There were no roll call votes in the House or Senate last week. This week, Beacon Hill Roll Call reports local senators’ roll call attendance records for the 2019 session through August 9. The Senate has held 91 roll call votes so far in 2019. Beacon Hill Roll Call tabulates the number of roll calls on which each senator was present and voting and then calculates that number as a percentage of the total roll call votes held. That percentage is the number referred to as the roll call attendance record. In the 40-member Senate, 36 senators (90 percent) have Revere Police to provide free bike helmets 100 percent roll call attendance records. The senator who missed the most roll calls is Sen. Adam Hinds (D-Pittsfield) who missed 7 roll calls, (92.3 percent attendance record). “Sen. Hinds did miss seven roll calls on June 27, 2019 because he was appointed by the Senate president to attend the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Budget and Tax Academy in Washington DC,” said Bethann Steiner, Hinds’ chief of staff. Two senators missed one roll call each and have a 98.9 percent record: Sens. Ryan Fattman (R-Sutton) and John Keenan (D-Quincy). “I was unable to be present for a single roll call due to attending my brother’s U.S. Army Aviation graduation from Fort Rucker in Alabama,” Fattman told Beacon Hill Roll Call. “I was unable to be recorded in the first procedural roll call vote of the year because I was in Lesvos, Greece working in the Moria Refugee Camp at the time,” said Keenan … “Since then, I have maintained a 100 percent voting record on all legislation this session.” By tradition, Senate President Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) POLICE | from page 2 diately recognized three out of the four individuals that were being detained from an Identification wanted bulletin that was put out earlier in the day by members of the Narcotics/Gang Unit, which depicted the three suspects involved in the shooting that took place on August 7 on Shirley Avenue. The Facebook post notes that following the arrest of the three suspects on Franklin Avenue, Revere and Chelsea Police Department detectives executed a search warrant at one of the suspect’s residence in Chelsea. Reportedly, during the search warrant execution, the detectives located numerous pieces of evidence linking that particular juvenile suspect to the shooting. “Our top priority is to protect the citizens of Revere and take a proactive approach to youth violence,” said Police Chief James Guido “I am very pleased with the diligent work of our Patrol Division and Criminal Investigation Division.” “I want to thank all of our The Revere Police Department will be giving free bike helmets to children who register their bikes as part of the department’s Safe Bike Program. The number in parentheses represents the number of roll calls that he or she missed. Sen. Joseph Boncore 100 percent (0) HOW LONG WAS LAST WEEK’S SESSION? Beacon Hill Roll Call tracks the length of time that the House and Senate were in session each week. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session. During the week of August 5-9, the House met for a total of one hour and 13 minutes while the Senate met for a total of one hour and 10 minutes. Mon. Page 16 THE REVERE ADVOCATE - Friday, August 16, 2019 S by Jim Miller How to Help an Aging Parent with a Hoarding Problem Dear Savvy Senior, My 70-year-old mother has become somewhat of a hoarder. Since my father died a few years ago, her house is so disorganized and messy with stuff that it’s becoming a hazard. What should I do to help her? Troubled Son Dear Troubled, Clutter addiction is a problem that effects up to five percent of Americans, many of whom are seniors. The problems can range anywhere from moderate messiness to hoarding so severe it may be related to a mental health disorder like obsessive-compulsive disorder. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips and resources that can help your mom. Why People Hoard The reasons most people hoard is because they have an extreme sentimental attachment to their possessions, or they believe they might need their items at a later date. Hoarding can also be a sign that an older person is depressed or showing early symptoms of dementia. Common problems for seniors who live in excessive clutter are tripping, falling and breaking a bone; overlooking bills and missing medications that are hidden in the clutter; and suffering from the environmental effects of mold, mildew and dust, and even living among insects and rodents. What to Do To get a handle on your mom’s problem, the Institute for Challenging Disorganization offers a free “Clutter Hoarding Scale” that you can download off their website at ChallengingDisorganization.org. If you find that your mom has a moderate cluttering problem, there are a number of things you can do to help. Start by having a talk with her, respectfully expressing your concern for her health and safety, and offering your assistance to help her declutter. If she takes you up on it, most professional organizers recommend decluttering in small steps. Take one room at a time or even a portion of a room at a time. This will help prevent your mom from getting overwhelmed. Before you start, designate three piles or boxes for your mom’s stuff – one pile is for items she wants to keep-and-put-away, another is the donate pile and the last is the throwaway pile. You and your mom will need to determine which pile her things belong in as you work. If your mom struggles with sentimental items that she doesn’t use, like her husband’s old tools or mother’s china for example, suggest she keep only one item for memory sake and donate the rest to family members who will use them. You will also need to help her set up a system for organizing the kept items and new possessions. Find Help If you need some help with the decluttering and organizing, consider hiring a professional organizer who can come to your mom’s home to help you prioritize, organize and remove the clutter. The nonprofit group National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals has a directory on the website at NAPO.net to help you locate a professional in your area. If your mom has a bigger, more serious hoarding problem (if her daily functioning is impaired, or if she is having financial difficulties, health problems, or other issues because of her hoarding) you’ll need to seek professional help. Antidepressants and/or talk therapy can help address control issues, anxiety, depression, and other feelings that may underline hoarding tendencies, and make it easier for her to confront her disorder. To learn more and find professional help see the International OCD Foundation which provides a hoarding center on their website (Hoarding.iocdf.org) that offers information, resources, treatments, self-help groups, and more. Also see HoardingCleanup.com, a site that has a national database of qualified resources including cleaning companies and therapists that can help. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
