In possession of the league’s best record with an impressive 29-2 performance, the Rockies hold the top seed in the upcoming playoff tournament. On the strength of its No. 1 spot, Revere earned a bye in this week’s first round and will host the opening game of a best-of-five semifinal beginning on Saturday at Revere High School (first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.). The East Boston Knights, who hold the second-best overall record at 22-9, were the other squad receiving a bye in the opening round. Seeds 3-6 squared off in best-of-three, opening round battles this week. The thirdseeded Charlestown Townies, winners of the Ted Williams Division, and the No. 6 Brighton Black Sox, who defeated the Al Thomas Athletics, 7-6, on Monday, faced off in one series. Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded McKay Club Beacons took on the No. 5 Stoneham Sabers in the other first-rounder. Suffering just two defeats all season, the Rockies achieved a club record for regular-season wins and concluded the campaign on a solid note by registering victories last week over the McKay Club Beacons (9-2), the Savin Hill Dodgers (4-2) and the East Boston Knights (5-0). Fittingly, Revere ace Jon Shepard had the honor of starting the regular-season finale at East Boston, and he didn’t disappoint in his complete-game effort. Shepard gave up just two hits, allowed one walk and fanned seven to cap a 9-0 season. The offense supplied him with a quick 2-0 lead in the S LANDSCAPE & MASONRY CO. As it turned out, that’s all Shepard would need. On the season, Revere’s ace righty finished with a 1.36 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings of work. Fellow starters Alex Wong (no losses and an ERA around two) and Chris Sandini (6-1 with a 2.12 ERA) round out a formidable starting rotation. Revere will be looking to redeem last season’s championship series loss in seven games to the Brighton Braves. The winners of the semifinals will square off in a best-of-seven to determine this year’s title holder.
