Page 2 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, September 16, 2022 Malden Musings – San Rock 2022, Part 3 By Peter Levine P icked up pieces while counting down the days until San Rock 2023... • Cuteness, going forward, thy name; the “Food Stand Gals”! Gianna Spadafora, Carmella Spadafora, Rylee Walker, Kayla Sullivan and Grace Damico brought cuteness and class to a whole new level this year as they took complete control of the hungry San Rock masses. The girls were a shy bunch though, only allowing me to snap 375 pictures of them during the weekend. The Saint Rock tradition continues with the next generation! Thank you, young ladies, for that. • My sources tell me that former Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis was responsible for the new “Saint Rocco Way” street signs that adorn poles on Pearl at Emerald Street and Oakland during San Rock weekend. A great parting gift to Malden, Chief. Thank you. • Speaking of Chief Molis, it is said that yours truly (Well, I’m the only one saying it, but what the heck) took the fi rst picture of Chief in civies in the past 42 years! Kevin looking rested and relaxed as he hung out with longtime friend Brian Crowe. • Best picture of the weekend (besides the Food Stand Gals) was the one snapped of former Mayor Ed Lucey, Dave Caiazzo (1970’s Malden Evening News Athlete of the Decade) and Suff olk Square’s Bobby Bellmer. All three looked marvelous and were having the best of times! • His name is Peter Giuliano and on San Rock weekend he is a rock star! The success of the Feast cannot happen unless Peter shows face. Thank you, sir. • Here’s a plug for our sound guy for the weekend, Mark Glunts, from Fastlane Productions Audio Visual & Event Services. He did an incredible job for us, as he does every year, and has the coolest moss you have ever seen! I cannot say enough good things about Mark (and his moss) so contact him at 978-667-8399 or 617448-8577 or www.FastlaneProductions.net if you are looking for the best! • The white, red and green tricolor “rumble strip” that now runs on Pearl Street from Thacher to Oakland was a pleasant surprise when it showed up a week or two before the Festa – such a wonderful and thoughtful addition to the neighborhood and the weekend. • They said it could never happen! That the creature comforts of older age had made him too comfortable. That and having an awesome significant other (Hi Jen!) placed him in permanent Grease Pole climbing retirement. But while young Billy Spadafora Jr. was compelled (some say pressured) by his peers to join in the fray, I could hear him mutter to himself, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” Yes, Billy Spadafora Jr. made like Superman, found a phone booth to change in (Youngsters out there, ask your parents what a phone booth is) and switched uniforms to make that fi nal push up the pole into San Rock glory and history! Great seeing you come out of retirement, Billy! You made your pops proud (once again). • Congratulations to the fearless women of the grease pole. De’anna DeMayo, Rebecca Krigman, Gina Spadafora-Hurley and Jenelle DeVits (to name a few) got right down into the greasy, messy fray and did an amazing job working so seamlessly with the guys giving them the adrenaline lift they needed as the day wore on! And, of course, they did; they are Edgeworth women! Ably assisted and mentored, of course, by longtime “Queen of Edgeworth” Debbie “Nice” Esposito. • I single out the women of the Grease Pole specifi cally because in days of old when we in Edgeworth weren’t as enlightened as we are today, it was frowned upon to even suggest a female climb the pole. If not for the women of Edgeworth, truth be told, there would be no GP today. These are the best of times! • Anthony Spadafora is another San Rocco rock star, and I get the pleasure to walk with him during the Procession every year – a wonderful man, father and friend. As Peter Falk’s iconic TV character “Columbo” would say “Just one more thing, sir” – I wrote the following words shortly after the Feast wrapped up, before the news hit that Alice had passed on. Strong. Dignifi ed. Principled. Beautiful. Alice was all this, and more: “On Sunday during the annual San Rock Fest we stopped in front of Alice Spadafora’s home. It’s part of the tradition. The First Lady of Edgeworth, Alice Spadafora, was not on her front porch last year when the Procession passed by. We were overjoyed that Lady Alice greeted us this year as the Saint rolled up into her driveway. We all jockeyed for position to say hello and get in that special ‘Kodak Moment.’ Alice and her family are part of the rich history of Malden and especially Edgeworth. This bipartisan legislation expands violence prevention and suicide awareness programming in schools, creates an anonymous reporting system for tips related to student safety concerns and tasks the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) with developing a model threat assessment policy for responding to dangerous activity. “We must do everything possible to support our schools in keeping students and staff safe, and ensuring a positive and healthy learning environment,” said Senator Jason Lewis, who is the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Education. “I was very pleased to work with Senator Finegold and Sandy Hook Promise to help get the SAVE StuNeed a hall for your special event? The SAVE Students Act is a response to two concurrent crises: a school shooting crisis and a youth mental health crisis. In the past 25 years, over 310,000 students have been exposed to gun violence during school, and more than 185 students, educators and other school personnel have been shot and killed. In addition, between 2007 and 2018 suicide rates rose by more than 57 percent for those aged 10 to 24. The SAVE Students Act complements the state legislature’s ongoing eff orts on comprehensive gun safety and behavioral health reforms. On July 30, the House of Representatives referred the SAVE Students Act to its Committee on Ways and Means. Mayor Gary Christenson presented the couple with a citation on behalf of the City of Malden in recognition of their milestone anniversary. BALLOT | FROM PAGE 1 When asked directly by Councillor McDonald if the results of any ballot question would have any effect on a plan already in place such as the Roosevelt Park project, interim City Solicitor John McNaught replied, "No." City Clerk Greg Lucey, when asked by Councillor McDonald and others on specifi cs of such a proposal, said that the next election after the state election this November 8 is not until the preliminary municipal election of September 2023. When asked if a special election could be held to support a ballot question, Lucey said that the last time Malden ran such a special election less than 3% of the total registered voters turned out, less than 900 voters citywide of over 33,000 registered. Lucey said the costs and logistics of such a proposal would be very high on both fronts. "Turnouts for special elections are extremely low historically, here across the state." Ward 6 Councillor Stephen Winslow, a supporter of the Roosevelt Park plan, said "This issue has already been on the ballot. I have consistently and strongly supported the plan in place at Roosevelt Park, which includes artifi cial turf, along with my colleague Barbara Murphy (of Ward 5) and others. "My opponents in the past few elections and the opponents of Councillor Murphy have made their opposition to artifi cial turf very clear in their campaigns against us, and both of us have been reelected by voters in our wards by substantial margins," Councillor Winslow said PUBLIC AUCTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD AT 1:00 PM MORTGAGEE’S SALE OF REAL ESTATE • MALDEN • 15 ROOM / 6 BEDROOM TWO FAMILY DUPLEX STYLE HOME “LOCATED AT BUS STOP TO MALDEN T-STATION” 220 Lebanon Street Malden, MA To Be Sold On The Premises FEATURES: Pictured, sons-in-law Eric Rubin and John Malachowski, Daughter Christine Malachowski, Rosalie Procopio, Mayor Gary Christenson, Ralph Procopio, Nicole Rubin and Raquel Griffi n. Page 10 MAK ATTACK| FROM PAGE 1 on the road versus host Whittier Tech. Leading the way was senior running back Makhail "Mak" Coulanges-Blaise, a sturdy, senior who simply broke the bank with a career-defining, command performance. The "Mak Attack" was remarkable: 5 touchdowns (4 rushing, 1 receiving) and a whopping 327 yards rushing, which is believed to be just under the all-time, single-game Malden High individual rushing record. The five rushing touchdowns IS believed to be a single-game record for all-time Malden High scorers. Coulanges-Blaise was the beneficiary of some standout offensive line play, led by juniors Jerrell Calixte, Vidal Garner, Joey Fils, sophomore Karl Lange and senior Kyle Paulding. Malden High second-year head coach Witche Exilhomme was very pleased with the Opening Night fireworks for Mak and Malden. "It was a great night for Malden High football," Coach Exilhomme said. "It is always big to get a win on Opening Night and our coaching staff is very happy THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, September 16, 2022 Malden also got a solid night defensively, though Whittier did make it interesting later in the game when they just refused to go away — scoring four second-half touchdowns, three in the final 9 minutes of the game. "We have to do a better job of closing the game up, but we still held on when we had to do so to make sure of this win." the Malden coach said. A key part of the "bend, don't break" scenario was the fact the Malden defense did not allow a conversion point on each of the Whittier Tech second-half touchdowns. Key to that was the play of Malden High senior Mak Coulanges-Blaise ran for 327 yards and 5 touchdowns in a 48-34 win over Whittier Tech Thursday night September 8.(Advocate Photo) for our players that were able to experience this. "The core of this team has been working extremely hard in the offseason to be able to come up with a night like this and we are so excited we are able to open up like this," Coach Exilhomme added. sophomore captain and linebacker James Hyppolite and junior defensive back Felix Junior DaCosta. Senior linebacker Kyle Paulding also played a strong game defensively for Malden. Coach Exilhomme and the staff rewarded Paulding for his performance by naming the senior as one of the new co-captains on the spot after the game. Four times Whittier Wildcats went for the two-point conversion and each time Malden's defense denied them and, in the process, wiped out eight potential points. Page 14 avvya yavvy eniiooravvy S iorn or vvy io iori by Jim Miller How to Find Travel Companions for Older Travelers Dear Savvy Senior, I am interested in fi nding some type of travel escort service to help my elderly parents fl y across the country. My son is getting married in the fall and would love for my parents to attend, but they’re both in their 80s with health issues, so they’ll need help getting there. Can you direct me to any travel services that can help us? Looking for Assistance Dear Looking, Traveling can be challenging under the best circumstances, but for seniors with medical problems, physical limitations or dementia it can be unmanageable. Fortunately, there are a bevy of companies today that provide traveling companion/escort services to help older adults with the rigors of travel. A good travel escort can provide your parents with transportation to and from the airport, manage their luggage, navigate and assist them through the airport, sit next to them on the fl ight, help them to their hotel and much more. Some companion services even provide personal care like medication management, dressing, bathing and feeding. And for those with specifi c medical needs, traveling nurse services are available too. But be aware that these services aren’t cheap. You will pay for the travel companion’s tickets, the companion’s hotel room if necessary, meals, incidentals and fees for the service. The price to accompany a client on a plane trip within the United States – including the companion fees and travel costs for all parties – can range anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the fl ight transfers and length of the trip. To locate a travel companion service in your area, search online for “senior travel companion” or “senior travel escort,” followed by your parent’s city or state. Or use an experienced national service like Flying Companions (FlyingCompanions.com), Travel Helpers (GoTravelHelpers.com) or FirstLight Home Care (FirstLightHomeCare.com), which has a national network of franchises that provides in-home care for seniors and off ers travel companion programs in about 80 percent of their 190 operating territories. Or, for medical travel companions do a search for “traveling nurse escort” or “medical travel companion,” or checkout Travel Care and Logistics (YourFlightNurse.com), which provides registered nurses as escorts. If, however, your parents don’t require a lot of assistance, or if you can’t aff ord a travel escort, consider asking a trusted family member or friend that has some air travel experience. Vet the Service If you’re interested in hiring a travel companion service, there are a number of things you need to check into to ensure you get the right escort. First, if you parents require personal or medical care while traveling, fi nd out if the escort is trained to manage their healthcare needs. What sort of medical certifi cations do they have? (Nursing credentials? C.P.R. training? etc.) Also, fi nd out how many trips the companion has taken with clients. Have they completed trips with travelers like your parents? How long has the travel service company been in business? What is the company’s safety record? And what sort of insurance does it carry, and what exactly is covered? Also, get a quote breaking down exactly what you’ll be required to pay, in addition to the companion’s fees. And get a list of two or three clients/references who have used their service and call them. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org.
