As part of the well-attended, special ceremony, held in the Mayor Edwin C.Lucey Courtyard, adjacent to Malden City Hall, the Malden Police Department and those who turned out also witnessed the swearing-in of a new Captain, Lieutenant and Sergeant last Friday, July 17. Research studies have linked prolonged daily social media use to increased depression and anxiety in youngsters. An Act protecting children from addictive social media feeds mandates that features like autoplay, “infinite scroll” and intrusive algorithms that capitalize on users’ personal data be turned off by default for minors (persons “under the age of 18”). That was the major and recurring theme which became apparent at the recent Malden High School Alumni Association (MHSAA) Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony. Six new inductees joined the ranks of the MHSAA Hall of Fame at the 7th Biennial Hall of Fame induction held at Anthony’s of Malden. This year’s inductees: Alan “Lanny” Berman, Ph.D. (Class of 1961); Philip Conti, D.M.D. (Class of 1953); Kevin Jarvis (Class of 1974); Phyllis Karas (Class of 1961); Michael Souza (Class of 1975); and Arlene Velleman (Class of 1975). Earlier on the day of the induction ceremony, the six honorees were guests of honor at a special luncheon held at Malden High School, hosted by Principal Chris Mastrangelo and members of the MHSAA. According to information from Malden Police, Captain Tuxbury will serve as a member of the department’s command staff and assume the role of Patrol Commander, overseeing the Uniformed Patrol Division. Lieutenant Reynolds will be assigned as the officer in charge of a patrol platoon, while Sergeant Watkins will serve as a street supervisor in his new role as a patrol sergeant. "Congratulations to each of them on this important milestone. We look forward to all they will continue to do in service to the Malden Police Department and our community," the Malden Police said in an official statement, "Events like today’s are made even more successful through the partnership and assistance of members of our community." THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, July 24, 2026 Page 5 ~ Malden Musings ~ 2026 Malden Recreation Department Mac Singleton Senior League By Peter Levine S ixteen-year-old grandson Christian Joseph Falzarano — now standing somewhere around 6-foot-3 and seemingly still growing every time I visit the house — made an impressive debut in the inaugural 2026 Malden Recreation Department Mac Singleton Senior League at Devir Park, suiting up for Kevin Goncalves’ The Yard. Starting at the “3” position, Christian made his Papa proud, posting a double-double in his very first Senior League game. Unfortunately, it came in a losing effort. The Expos, despite having a very short bench, jumped out to an early lead behind the outstanding play of Malden High School Golden Tornado starting point guard Ethan Phejarasai and never looked back. Christian logged heavy minutes and admitted afterward that he was absolutely “gassed,” the disappointment of the loss written all over his face, but so was the determination (which I had a hand in instilling in him if I do say so myself — LOL). He believes The Yard has the talent to make a legit run at the championship, and after watching them compete (one through at least seven), I wouldn’t bet against them. As for my personal fave Christian Falzarano highlight reel moment, one play is etched in stone. During a second-half comeback attempt, Christian came flying in from seemingly out of nowhere to snatch a rebound out of the nasty Canadian wildfire smokefilled clouds. For one glorious moment, I was taken back to the days of NBA/ABA Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins, “The Hawk,” whose acrobatic rebounding and seemingly impossible reach made him one of basketball’s true artists. It was one of those plays that never show up in the box score but makes everyone in the park stop, look and say, “Did you see that?” Well, it made at least me and his moms Angela say, “Did you see that?” LOL. On a very related note, Christian’s siblings, four-year-old Milo and six-year-old Lana, gave the newly renovated Devir Park Playground an enthusiastic double thumbs-up! The splash pad was an instant hit; the double swing got quite the workout; and that unique play structure — something you don’t see in many area parks — kept both happily occupied for hours. Lana wasted no time making friends with a couple of little girls, while Milo did what little brothers have done since the beginning of time: happily tagging along, determined not to miss a second of the quick paced action. Watching those little ones laugh, play and make new friends at Devir Park reminded me (and my sister, Barbara) exactly what a neighborhood park is supposed to be about and made me extremely happy watching them play in the same park I had so many happy memories at. So, congratulations, Malden. You for sure knocked this one out of the park onto Emerald Street. Devir has always held a special place in the hearts of generations of Edgeworth kids, and now, thanks to this remarkable renovation, it’s ready to create memories for generations yet to come. Great job, Malden. You done good. It is said in Malden Musings... • Malden High School Class of ’77’s Bobby Jones graced us with his larger-than-life presence last month with a surprise pop-in at the Italian American Citizen’s Club. Hooking up with a couple of old paisans, Jonesy hasn’t aged a day and looks like he could still sport the Blue & Gold and give them young’uns a run for their money! Florida certainly agrees with you, kid! Great to see you, Bobby! All the best, my friend. • George MacKay, Malden misses you already! You ain’t been gone for a cup of coffee but your mere presence cannot be replaced any time soon. George retired from the MPD last month after 40 or so years on the job he grew to love almost as much as his lovely wife Lisa and the neighborhood he grew up in, Edgeworth. I mean, it’s been 64 years since I was in this building,” Dr. Berman said. “It’s wonderful, it brings back a lot of memories.” Dr. Philip Conti, D.M.D., Class of 1953, was recognized for Community Service, through his over 60 years as a local dentist and his philanthropic work with what was then called Project Triangle, as one of its founders in 1971. Dr. Conti recalled collaborating with other Malden and community and Malden High School Principal Chris Mastrangelo served as Master of Ceremonies. Over 50 years later, what is now called Triangle, Inc. has steered thousands of disabled clients into skills training and employment, across several communities in the region. “What I learned growing up, with my family being involved with the Order Sons of Italy in Malden and through their charitable organizations, you got the feeling that you have to get back to the community,” Dr. Conti recalled. “You can’t just be taking.” Kevin Jarvis, Class of 1974, was recognized in the field of Government. A U.S. Marine veteran from a family of military service, he enlisted in the USMC soon after high school graduation, then made a career in federal law enforcement. He worked for many years in both the United States and overseas in where Malden residents served. “You can do whatever you want. It’s not going to be easy and you’re going to need help from friends and family,” Jarvis said. “When you get into a job somewhere, coworkers will help you. I found that out.” Phyllis Karas, a second honoree from the Class of 1961, recognized for contributions to the Arts, has spent her life as a published author on many topics — most notably, crime — as well as covering celebrities for publications and national magazines, such as People. Karas is also a professor at Boston University’s School of Journalism. She has in her career received awards from the New England Newspaper & Press Association, such as the Best Feature Story, as well as the Simone Rockower Award for Excellence in Feature Writing in Moment Magazine. “I feel very honored and very humbled. At this stage of my life, it’s nice to be honored for anything, and especially this, because the school meant a lot to me,” Karas said of Malden High School. Souza attended Amherst College and then pursued a lifelong career in the business world, served as the first Chief Executive Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Health System’s Affiliated Physicians Group and the CEO and President of New England Life Care. “I really leaned on my mentors at Malden High School in going on to next steps in my life,” Souza said. “I learned to stick to my values and be honest in all that I do. It has taken me a long way.” Arlene Velleman, a Class of 1973 graduate, was honored in the field of Education. She has crafted a 40-year career centered on working with hearing-impaired students, including teaching sign language to many. At a young age — in elementary school — Page 7 she recalled, she became enamored with American Sign Language (ASL), which became her life’s passion, working with and for the hearing impaired. Velleman pursued learning ASL in college and beyond with the National Theatre of the Deaf, leading to her first teaching position at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown. She moved on to many years as a special education teacher and then administrator in the Waltham Public Schools. She recalled an episode at Malden High in her senior year, 1973, where her Senior Class made a sizable donation to Project Triangle, making the Class the largest donor that year. Another highlight of the evening came when MHSAA leaders Camille Colantuoni and Arlene Ceppetelli presented MHS Principal Chris Mastrangelo with a special award. I had Affordable Care Act health insurance, but after my premiums went up in January, I had to drop my coverage. Now I’m overwhelmed by medical bills. What can I do? --Struggling Patient Dear Struggling, You’re definitely not alone. Medical debt is very common. About 1 in 12 Americans are dealing with it, and many had insurance when the bills started piling up. The good news is there are ways to reduce what you owe and make it more manageable. Here are some steps that can help. Check your bills Medical billing errors are more common than you might think, so start by taking a close look at every bill and explanation of benefits you receive. Watch for duplicate charges, services you did not receive or prices that seem off. If something does not look right, call your provider’s billing office and ask for an itemized bill. Do not be shy about asking questions. Even small mistakes can add up. Ask about help Most hospitals, especially nonprofit ones, are required to offer financial assistance programs, often called charity care. Depending on your income, you may qualify to have part or even all of your bill forgiven. Call the hospital billing office and ask specifically about financial assistance. You can also visit DollarFor.org, a nonprofit that helps patients apply for charity care programs at no cost. Negotiate costs If you do not qualify for assistance, you still have options. Many hospitals and doctors are willing to work with patients, especially if you reach out early. Ask if they can lower the bill or offer a discount if you can pay something upfront. You can also request a no interest payment plan to spread the cost out over time. If this feels overwhelming, a medical billing advocate can help. The Alliance of Professional Health Advocates, at aphadvocates. org, can connect you with professionals who review bills and negotiate on your behalf. Find programs Since you recently lost coverage, it is also worth checking whether you qualify for Medicaid, especially if your income has dropped. You can apply through Healthcare.gov or your state Medicaid office. Another helpful tool is BenefitsCheckUp.org, from the National Council on Aging, which can point you to programs that help lower health care and prescription costs. Get support You do not have to handle this on your own. There are several trusted organizations that offer free or low-cost help. The Patient Advocate Foundation (patientadvocate.org) provides case management services and can help you find financial assistance. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (nfcc.org) offers nonprofit credit counseling and guidance on managing debt. You can also visit NeedyMeds.org to locate programs that can help lower the cost of prescriptions and other medical expenses. The most important thing is to act sooner rather than later. Ignoring medical bills can lead to collections and added stress, but many providers are willing to work with you if you reach out. Start by reviewing your bills, then explore assistance programs and payment options. With some persistence, you can often lower what you owe and set up a plan that fits your budget. I loved Malden High School, its students and staff, and I truly appreciated all that the Alumni Association does for everyone.” The Malden High School Alumni Association hosts a Hall of Fame one of my most reliable sources (thank you, former Chief Kevin Molis), Marc Gatcomb becomes the sixth Chief in recent memory to hail from that beloved neighborhood. That’s a remarkable run for a few square blocks tucked away in Ward 2. What many people don’t realize is that Chief Gatcomb grew up on Hubbard Street, right in the heart of Edgeworth. His childhood neighborhood was filled with future public servants. One-time Police Chief Jimmy Keohane lived just around the corner on Russell Street, while firefighter Jimmy Dockery called nearby Charles Street home. There must have been something in the water over there (or the proximity to the AOH and the IA possibly? LOL). Another trusted source tells me that as a kid Marc owned just about every Matchbox car ever made. Looking back, maybe that was early training for managing a fleet of cruisers. Just for the record, Marc isn’t simply a great guy in 2026 — actually, he has always been one of the genuinely good people. Friendly, approachable and respected by everyone who knows him, he’s the kind of person who has earned every promotion through hard work, professionalism and integrity. Word on the street is that he’ll continue to lead the department with honesty, respect and dedication while keeping the Malden Police Department among the finest law enforcement agencies Induction every other year to honor individuals who have graduated from Malden High School, as well as their legacy and their successes at Malden High. Rose Tomasello Formerly of Malden, an MHS Golden Tornado Hall of Famer, of Rockland, at 69 Rose Tomasello, of Rockland, a native of Malden, passed away on July 11 after a brief illness. Rose was born in Malden to Peter and Frances (Spitzbarth) Tomasello. She was a graduate of Malden High School, Class of 1975, where she excelled in field hockey, basketball and softball, earning induction into the Golden Tornado Club Hall of Fame. After high school, Rose for most of her professional life worked for decades at the former Viking Seafoods plant in Malden, where she formed lifelong friendships that remained strong throughout her life. She most recently worked as a human resource manager at LaMarca and Sons Bakery Products in Malden, a position she found very rewarding. Rose was a sports enthusiast who played softball for Winter Hill and participated in countless tournaments throughout New England and beyond, making many lifelong friends along the way. She loved her Boston sports teams, especially during the days of Larry Bird, and most recently enjoyed cheering for the Patriots and Drake Maye. Rose loved to travel anywhere there was a beach, a sunset and a casino. Her trips to Aruba were especially memorable. Rose made an impact on everyone she knew and was greatly loved and respected by so many. Her motto was simple: Always treat people as she would want to be treated, and she lived by that principle every day. Rose is survived by her loving wife, Denise Carroll of Rockland. She was the cherished sister of Barbara McGlinchy and Bernard Santo of Beverly. Rose was the beloved sister-in-law of Paul Condon of Malden, David and Terry Foley of Rockland, Daniel and Elida Carroll of Braintree and James Carroll of Brockton. She was predeceased by her sister, Jean Condon; her brother, Robert Santo; and Barrett King. Rose was the cherished aunt of many nieces and nephews whom she adored. She loved spending time with them and enjoyed spoiling them. She is also survived by her loving cousins, who were more like siblings to her, and countless lifelong friends. It also includes added optional safeguards for minors, such as limits on the ability of “non-friend” accounts to contact minors’ accounts. To protect personal data, the bill requires companies to offer multiple ways for people to verify their age, including at least one method that doesn’t require a government-issued ID or biometric data, so that users can remain anonymous. Adults would also not be required to verify their age and could instead use the default minor settings if preferred. On July 15, the House of Representatives referred the bill to its committee on Ways and Means. Earlier this year, the House passed different legislation pertaining to youngsters’ social media usage.
