Malden ST. ROCCO'S FEAST 90TH ANNIVERSARY SEE PAGE 5 ADVOCATE Vol. 28, No. 29 -FREEwww.advocatenews.net Published Every Friday Three more residents pull nomination papers By Barbara Taormina T ime is running short for anyone considering a run in the upcoming municipal election. Potential candidates have until 5 p.m. next Thursday, July 25, to pull nomination papers to run for office. It’s late, but not too late and Assistant Registrar of Voters Carol Ann Desiderio has posted an updated list of candidates with three new names added to the field. Ward 4 Councillor Ryan O’Malley is facing a challenge in his bid for a third term from former Assistant City Solicitor and School Committee Member Frank Russell. A member of the Malden Historical Society, Russell recently published “An Early History of Malden.” Adam Weldai has stepped up to run for the Ward 5 seat on the School Committee, which opened up unexpectedly when Tara Beardsley announced she would not be seeking a third term. Weldai, an assistant middle school principal in Chelsea, served three terms on the Malden School Committee from 2010 to 2015. A former middle school history teacher, Weldai also served as interim principal of Forestdale School for the 2016-17 schoolyear. Ryan O'Malley Ward 4 Councillor faces challenger Frank Russell. In the race for the Ward 6 School Committee seat, local activist and public school advocate Joe Gray appears to be headed into a race with Renee Dean. A newcomer to the city’s political scene, Dean is an interior designer for Dean Associates Architects, a family firm based in Lynnfield. Dean has been an active school volunteer and serves as the treasurer for the Forestdale PTO. Incumbents on the City Council who remain unopposed are Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe, Ward 2 Councillor Paul Condon, Ward 6 CounAdam Weldai running for Ward 5 School Committee seat. cillor David Camell and Ward 7 Councillor Neal Anderson. School Committee Members Michael Drummey, who represents Ward 1, and Jennifer Spadafora, who represents Ward 3, are also, so far, running unopposed. Although several residents who have pulled papers have over the past couple of months have a history of conflicts and legal troubles, those histories could only become relevant after July 30 at 5 p.m., the last day and the last hour to submit nomination papers with the required number of signatures to the City Clerk. Malden Police celebrate Junior Police Academy graduation 617-387-2200 Friday, July 19 , 2019 Three former Malden Catholic Xaverian Brothers named in report on sexual abuse By Barbara Taormina X averian Brothers who worked at Malden Catholic High School were on a list of nearly three dozen names of members of the order who have been credibly accused of abusing children. The reports of abuse date back decades and include brothers who were assigned to St. John’s Prep in Danvers, St. John’s High in Shrewsbury, Xaverian Brothers High in Westwood and Malden Catholic. According to Xaverian Brothers, allegations of abuse are reviewed by a panel of professionals in psychology, law enforcement, cannon law and human resources. A General Superior makes the final decision on credibility of abuse accusations. “We view this disclosure as part of our commitment now to preventing abuse and hope that it may assist survivors of abuse in their healing. We also hope that our release of names will contribute to the process of restoring trust in Church leadership,” explained the order on its website. According to documents listing the brothers involved, Francis Jerome (William M. Burns), who was assigned to Malden Catholic from 1935 to 1938 and again from 1968 to 1974, is suspected of abuse that spanned over a period from the 1950s to the 1970s. Allegations against him were first reported in 2003, and include at least one Malden Catholic student. Jerome died in 1974. Brother Ronald (John J. Donovan) was assigned to Malden Catholic from 1972 to 1974. Allegations of abuse believed to have taken place during the 1960s were first reported in 1993 in New York City. Donovan died in 2000. Allegations of abuse were also reported against Brother Wenceslaus (Leo Gillis), who was at Malden Catholic from 1987 to 2004. While the order recognizes that the allegations against Gillis, which were reported in in Brooklyn in 2004, have a “reasonable possibility,” the Brothers also say a full investigation was not possible because of incomplete information. Gillis died in 2014. “The Xaverian Brothers want to continue this journey of repentance, transparency, and solidarity with victims as we renew our commitment to our mission ‘to manifest God’s compassionate love to all whom we meet in this journey of life,’” wrote Brother Edward Driscoll, General Superior, in a statement posted on the order’s website. “Please join the Brothers praying for continued healing for those who have been wounded by the evil of sexual abuse,” he said. $3.39 $2.45 GALLON GALLON We accept: MasterCard * Visa * & Discover Price Subject to Change without notice 100 Gal. Her Flag will be created throughout the course of her travels, which take place in the order of the states’ amendment’s ratification. During her travels she is collaborating with women artists in each state, sewing a stripe designed by each onto Her Flag, which will ultimately measure 18 feet tall by 26 feet wide when complete in 2020. She is collaborating with 36 women artists who each currently live in one of the 36 states that ratified the 19th Amendment. Each of the artists has designed one stripe for the 36-stripe flag, created in her own artistic voice. Marilyn Artus will sew the stripe onto the flag at a live event in the capital city of each state. “I am on a mission to make sure that every woman I come in contact with over the next 14 months is registered to vote and gets out in 2020 to put that registration to use.” said project founder, artist and suffrage era enthusiast Artus. “But celebrating this anniversary isn’t just about women. This was a fight. It took Democrats and Republicans and Men and Women and Black and White Americans working together to get this amendment passed. Her Flag is a not a political piece of work, rather a powerful, positive symbol used to educate and celebrate this truly momentous American anniversary.” Partner artists of note include Utah’s Jann Haworth, pioneer of fiber art sculpture in the 1960s and best known for co-designing The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album cover, for which she received a Grammy. Nicole LaRue created the stripe for New Hampshire. She designed the official Women’s March on Washington logo and was recently interviewed by CNN about the design. Boston’s live Her Flag sewing event will be held on July 25 at 4:30 p.m. at the Old State House at 206 Washington St. Author Jen Deaderick will accompany Marilyn during the performance. Artus is partnering with Massachusetts artist Kari Percival. Percival noted, “When I took a deep dive into researching the role of Massachusetts early suffrage activists, I was moved by the history I found. The fight against slavery in this state sparked a radical, intersectional civil rights movement for ‘Equality before the law, without regard for sex or color.’ that challenged structures of power. As far back as the 1830s, women of color and white women, moved by the injustice of slavery to speak in public, encountered violent resistance because of their gender. They realized they had even more work to do, and the work continued through generations: In the 1850s-1870s, they convened, debated and signed petitions. They edited newspapers, wrote books and gained partial suffrage. From 1880s through 1900, they built coalitions with unions and clubs. Through the 1900s-1920, they lobbied and rallied and coaxed the popular idea of women’s suffrage from radical to fashionable to obvious.” “You never give up hope, never, because just when you think you’re going to give up, that’s when you could really gain the victory – if you just kept on going, just a little bit more.” —Melnea Cass, 1896-1978, who ran voter registration drives for other Boston women of color in 1920. About the journey The first stop of the journey was in Madison, Wisc., on June 10, 2019, on the 100th year anniversary of the Wisconsin legislature passing the resolution ratifying the 19th amendment. Artus is continuing her travels to each of the 36 states in order of ratification, ending in Nashville, Tenn., on August 18, 2020. On this date, 100 years after Tennessee ratified the 19th amendment granting American women the universal right to vote, Artus will complete and display Her Flag. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE – Friday, July 19, 2019 Page 3 Committee presents resident parking plan to the neighborhoods By Barbara Taormina V isitor passes, weekend restrictions and parking on private ways are some of the issues raised by residents at a series of neighborhood meetings on the city’s proposed resident parking program. The Parking Review Committee has been making the rounds to different neighborhoods, explaining the program that has been in the works for the past year. Members repeatedly stressed the program is a work in progress and the committee’s goal at the meetings is to share information and gather input from residents. “We want to get feedback from the public to have the best possible program that’s not invasive to the way you park your vehicle,” Ward 2 Councillor Paul Condon told residents at a meeting at Salemwood School. Ron Hogan, director of the city’s Parking Department, has been leading the meetings, which include a slide presentation of the main elements of the program. The fourth slide, which features a huge “No” in the center, is Hogan’s favorite. It promises that the proposed program will have no costs for residents with passenger vehicles registered in Malden. And it will be easy. Residents who pay excise tax will receive a sticker with a permit number in the mail. The tentative start date for the program is next January. “For the majority of residents, resident parking will be a nonevent,” said Hogan. The proposal now on the table calls for resident-only parking on all city streets from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Friday. There are no restrictions on weekends and holidays. Streets around the MBTA will also be restricted to residents from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. The zones, or residential parking restrictions, now in place will be eliminated. “As much as we can we want to make sure our streets are left for our residents and their visitors,” said Hogan. Visitor passes were a major concern, and Hogan explained that the committee had spent a lot of time developing a virtual visitor pass system. Committee members learned from other cities and towns that one of the biggest complaints from residents was having to go to city hall and pay a fee for a visitor parking pass. In Malden, residents will be able to either call the parking department or head online to the department’s website with their sticker number, the license plate numbers of their guests and the dates a guest vehicle will be parked in Malden. Once that information is entered or phoned in, the visitor parking pass is valid. Hogan said residents will receive an email confirmation that they can print and place on a visitor’s vehicle, but it isn’t necessary. “We think this is unique and better than what’s in surrounding cities and towns,” said Hogan. A Boston Street couple who were at the parking presentation at Ferryway this week said their neighborhood, which already has resident-only parking around the clock, would be losing some parking protection under the new plan. They worried that cars from Everett could legally fill up their street until 1 a.m. And they didn’t like the prospect of heading out in the early mornDCR to begin work on Fells/ Highland Ave. intersection By Barbara Taormina A fter years of meetings, studies, presentations and debates, work is finally scheduled to begin on safety improvements at the intersection of Fellsway East and Highland Avenue. Long considered one of the most dangerous intersections in the state, and certainly the most dangerous in Malden, the intersection will undergo a major overhaul that includes removing the central traffic island, installing four-way traffic signals, shortening crosswalks and constructing sidewalks and bicycle corridors and repaving. The Fellsway is state road and responsibility for maintenance and improvements falls to the Department of Conservation and Recreation. After studying the intersection, DCR proposed a short-term fix that included bike lanes and reduced traffic lanes that was estimated to cost between $50,000 and $100,000. But nobody in Malden, and particularly residents of Ward 3 who cross the intersection every day, felt the short-term solution solved the safety problems. And many who looked at the short-term proposal cringed at the potential of long, slow lines of traffic moving through reduced lanes. City leaders and state reps continued to negotiate with DCR, emphasizing the fact that much of the traffic that channels through the intersection isn’t from Malden. The agency ultimately agreed to the longterm safety improvements that also incorporate feedback from residents. The new intersection is expected to cost about $1 million. DCR has agreed to cover twothirds of the cost of the project. Malden initially intended to cover its share of about $330,000 with mitigation money, funds the city collects from developers for improvements to ease the impact of new residential housing projects. City councillors supported that plan and suggested looking at Chapter 90 state funding for transportation and infrastructure to pay for the city’s share of the project. But For Advertising with Results, call The Advocate Newspapers at 617-387-2200 or Info@advocatenews.net Malden’s Statehouse delegation was able to dig out an additional $100,000 in state funding to help defray the city’s costs. Despite the extensive scope of the intersection makeover, city officials anticipate that the project will be substantially complete and functional sometime this fall. ing to move cars to spaces that open up at that hour. Hogan acknowledged that there might be some problems from residents on streets that border Revere, Melrose and Everett. Still, he said that neighborhood parking zones would likely be eliminated to make the program as clear and simple as possible. He urged residents in those areas to talk with their ward councillors about possible solutions. Another resident at the Ferryway presentation asked about restrictions on private ways. Hogan said that was one of several details the committee is still discussing. Several residents wondered why the committee didn’t go further and propose resident-parking-only 24 hours a day throughout the city. “We felt that daytime restrictions would interfere with people living their lives,” said Hogan. The Parking Review Committee plans to review and discuss concerns raised by residents and to continue ironing out some of the unresolved details of the plan. A citywide meeting on the proposal is planned for September. AUTOTECH 1989 SINCE Is your vehicle ready for the Summer Season?!! AC SPECIAL Recharge your vehicle's AC for the warm weather! MAPC’s recommending Malden develop 4,000 to 6,000 units of additional housing. This is even before the current downtown housing developments are complete. Such a dramatic increase in housing units would change the heart and soul of the city. This is not an approach I support. I agree there is a housing issue in the state. Governor Baker has stated he wants to add 135,000 housing units. However, I do not agree with using Malden to jump start significant housing development for the overall region. This approach is not in the best interest of the city of Malden or Ward 3. MAPC acknowledged that they are not considering schools, traffic, infrastructure, transportation or any quality of life elements in making their recommendations. Whether you are a renter or homeowner, millennial or baby boomer, MBTA rider or drive/bike to work, we are all impacted by decisions that do not consider the downstream impacts to the community. An additional 4,000 to 6,000 housing units will add to our classroom sizes, add an exorbitant number of MBTA riders, vehicles, bikes and people to a city that is currently tackling these very quality of life issues. Insisting on a moratorium is not the solution. By doing so, we squander any opportunity to be smart about the development in Malden and in Ward 3. One opportunity we have is to support housing for impacted Malden residents. We can move forward on the community vision for a reasonably sized senior housing project at the Malden Hospital site. This addresses a pressing need, does not add to our classroom sizes, does not add to rush hour traffic and is an issue already noted in the MAPC report. As a candidate for the Ward 3 City Council, I support this community vision and can see the path to make it a reality. A reasonably sized senior housing development with interactive open space that ties back to Fellsmere Pond makes sense, is achievable and is what the residents of Malden would like to see. By 2035, 1 in 3 households will be headed by someone 65 or older. We can plan for our proud future by addressing this issue now. Much like we want to provide safe and affordable homes for our parents and grandparents, we can provide safe and affordable homes to seniors in our community. We can support the long-standing tradition of multi-generational housing. I am a data person. I delve into the numbers and I listen closely to what is said as well as what is not said. I was struck when the presenters from MAPC could not provide a straight answer to my simple question, “Does the analysis include all housing units including those not completed or unoccupied?” Some questions still need to be answered based on the MAPC recommendations: Is the revenue stream coming into the city able to grow enough to support essential services, infrastructure maintenance and upgrades? How many school age children will be housed in the additional units? How many MBTA riders, cyclists, motorists will be housed in these units? How will local business be impacted both positively and negatively? Are apartments the best way to grow our city when the result is that residents are selling their family homes? It would be best for Malden if we work on finding ways to keep our residents right here in 02148. These are the types of questions I will ask as the Ward 3 City Councillor. Recommendations that suggest changes to our city need to be challenged. I will politely and respectfully challenge and stand strong if the answer is not enough. MAPC was questioned about how many housing units other municipalities are being asked to develop. Here’s their answer, “We make similar recommendations to Winchester, but Winchester wants to stay leafy and green, so they decide to not build anymore…” If Winchester can politely say “thanks, but no thanks”, so can Malden! The many residents of Malden that I speak with daily would like to stay leafy and green. They would like to be able to ride the MBTA without an unmanageable crush of riders and not experience complete gridlock. They would like to see school class sizes that are optimal for teaching and learning. They would like to have a reasonable quality of life. Like our neighboring municipality Winchester, Malden needs leadership that will stand up to state agencies looking to solve regional problems on the backs of Malden residents. We need to insist on standing for what is right for all residents, not accept what is recommended to us. As a fierce community advocate, I have achieved measurable success to better our community. We can move forward with developing the Malden Hospital site to accommodate our senior’s housing needs, create interactive open space, look to ways to support smart growth and continue to make Malden a great place to live for everyone. I will not gamble with the future of our community. As your Ward 3 City Councillor I promise to put Malden’s concerns first, before agreeing to be the solution to the region’s concerns. Thanks, but no thanks MAPC! Page 12 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE – Friday, July 19, 2019 Melrose Club 200 Foxwoods Casino Trip – Sept. 10 A nother trip to Foxwoods Casino is in the planning for Tuesday, September 10. Although the date seems to be quite far away, the 200 Club Trip Coordinator, Irene Thibeau, hopes that people can make their reservations as soon as possible. Because of a change in policy with the bus companies, it is necessary that the 35 seats made available to the group be paid for well in advance of the date. Other aspects of the trip remain unchanged. Please call Irene at 781-665-5058 to make your reservation as soon as possible. As mentioned above, it is necessary that the seats be reserved well ahead of time. As a reminder, it should be mentioned here that you cannot obtain a casino card without a valid picture I.D. If you’ve gone to Foxwoods before, you might already have one of their cards. The bus will pick up from the Levi Gould Building (200 West Foster St. in Melrose) at 9:00 a.m.; a second pickup will be at the Cochrane House (80 Grove St. in Melrose) at 9:15 a.m., on Tuesday, September 10. Price per person is $35.00 and the package includes a $10.00 food credit and $25.000 in free slots play. Time at the Casino would be from 11:00 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.; the return trip home would leave Foxwoods at 5:00 p.m. The trip is open to anyone – it is not necessary that you are a senior citizen, or a resident in any of the local senior retirement homes – everyone is welcome. Many people who have gone on the casino trips in the past say it’s an enjoyable luxury motor coach ride with friends and great socialization. The trips are convenient and fun and give folks the chance to gamble, shop the casino retail shops and have a nice lunch to break up the day and relax a bit. And as an added plus, who knows, you might be the one to come home the big winner the availability of nasal naloxone (brand name Narcan) rescue kits prior to discharge from a facility after treatment for an opioid overdose. With no strings attached. $300,000 FOR FAMILIES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSED NEWBORNS (S 3) Senate 39-0, approved an amendment that would provide $300,000 to the Health Policy Commission for a childhood grant program to support and care for families with substance-exposed newborns that suffer from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). This syndrome is a group of problems a baby experiences when withdrawing from exposure to narcotics. Sen. Vinny deMacedo (R-Plymouth), the sponsor of the amendment, said that newborns that are born with NAS, experience the same withdrawal symptoms that adults with the same dependency would experience [including] GI upset, muscle rigidity and sensory hypersensitivity, and can suffer from long term consequences such as behavioral problems, vision impairments and motor skill delays. “This amendment and the funding it included will be instrumental in targeting communities and assisting families that are in need of support and whose children are in need of treatment,” explained deMacedo. “Not only will this program offer intervention and support, it will be a crucial step in collecting quantitative data on the long term needs of these children experiencing NAS and will allow future children to receive better, more targeted treatment and prevention in the future.” (A “Yes” vote is for the amendment.) Sen. Jason Lewis Yes $5 MILLION FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE (S 3) Senate 39-0, approved an amendment to implement $5 million in programs recommended by the Harm Reduction Commission created by the Legislature in 2018. Provisions include $1.5 million to increase the availability of sterile and safe injection equipment and syringe disposal services; $150,000 for a pilot program to provide access to fentanyl testing strips or other drug checking equipment; and $300,000 to increase consumed communities across the commonwealth,” said Sen. Julian Cyr (D-Truro), the sponsor of the amendment. “We need to focus on what we can do to save lives and harm reduction is an evidence-based approach used to keep people using opioids alive and safe until they progress into clinical treatment … Harm reduction itself should not be seen as a way to end opioid use, but rather as a valuable survival plan, one that has started to gain consensus across the political spectrum as the right thing to do to save lives.” (A “Yes” vote is for the amendment.) Sen. Jason Lewis Yes $484,875 FOR GRANTS TO COUNCILS ON AGING (S 3) Senate 39-0, approved an amendment increasing funding for Councils on Aging by $484,875 (from $16,740,125 to $17,225,000.) Sen. Becca Rausch (D-Needham), the amendment’s sponsor said the money will fund innovation grants to municipal Councils on Aging and will benefit seniors statewide. “Our collective moral compass is set, at least in part, by whether and how we respect our elders,” said Rausch. “Not only do our elders want to age in their chosen communities, but also … this approach to aging builds community, reduces costs, enriches lives and improves health outcomes by notably reducing isolation.” (A “Yes” vote is for the amendment.) Sen. Jason Lewis Yes HOW LONG WAS LAST WEEK'S SESSION? Beacon Hill Roll Call tracks the length of time that the House and Senate were in session each week. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature's job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session. During the week of July 8-12, the House met for a total of 10 hours and 35 minutes while the Senate met for a total of one hours and 27 minutes. Mon. I’m 65, and live primarily on my Social Security, and am having a hard time paying my Medicare out-of-pocket costs. Need Some Help Dear Need, There are several financial assistance programs that can help lower-income Medicare beneficiaries who are having a difficult time paying their out-of-pocket health care costs. Here’s what’s available, along with the eligibility requirements and how to apply. Medicare Savings Programs Let’s start with a program that helps pay premiums and outof-pocket costs for Medicare Parts A and B. It’s called the Medicare Savings Program (MSP), and it has several different benefit levels for people based on their income and asset level. At its most generous the program will pay your Part A and B premiums and pretty much all your Medicare deductibles, coinsurance and copayments. At its least generous the program will pay just your Part B premium. To qualify for a MSP, the minimum standard set by Medicare, is an income under 135 percent of the federal poverty level, which at the moment works out to around $1,426 a month for individuals (or $1,923 for married couples). Everything counts towards income, including payouts from 401(k) plans, pensions, Social Security, and help from family members. Medicare also allows states to impose an asset test, which can be as little as $7,730 per individual ($11,600 for married couples), not counting your house or car but counting retirement savings and bank accounts. But some states have made their MSP programs a lot more generous, with much higher income limits and in some cases no asset tests at all. And the program may be called something else in your state. To find out if you qualify or to apply, contact your state Medicaid program. Visit Medicare.gov/contacts or call all 800-633-4227 for contact information. Medication Extra Help For help with Medicare (Part D) prescription drug plan costs, there is another completely separate program called Extra Help. To get it, you’ll need to apply through your local Social Security office. Depending on how low your income is, this program will pay part or all of your Part D prescription drug plan’s monthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription co-payments. In 2019, individuals with a yearly income below $18,735 ($25,365 for a married couple), and assets under $14,390 ($28,720 for a married couple) can qualify for Extra Help. If you’re eligible to be in a Medicare Savings Program, you will automatically qualify for Extra Help. But because the requirements are slightly different, even if you don’t qualify for a Medicare Savings Program for Part B you might be able to get Extra Help for Part D. For more information or to apply, visit SSA.gov/ extrahelp or call Social Security at 800-772-1213. Other Assistance Programs Depending on your income level, needs and location there are many other financial assistance programs that can help like Medicaid, SSI (Supplemental Security Income), PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly), SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), (LIHEAP) Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and many others. To help you find out what types of assistance programs you may be eligible for, and learn how to apply for them, go to BenefitsCheckUp.org. This is a free, confidential Web tool designed for people age 55 and older that contains more than 2,500 programs. It’s also possible to get help in person at one of the 87 Benefits Enrollment Centers scattered across the U.S. Call 888-2686706 or visit NCOA.org/centerforbenefits/becs to locate a center in your area. Some centers also offer assistance over the phone. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. WITNESS, Hon. Maureen H. Monk, First Justice of this Court. TARA E. DeCRISTOFARO REGISTER OF PROBATE July 19, 2019 Veterans Affairs (VA) from denying benefits, including VA home loans, based on a veteran’s income being derived from a state’s legal marijuana industry. “The cannabis industry is a growing part of our economy and no one, let alone our veterans, should be penalized for being part of it,” said Congresswoman Clark. “The passage of this amendment ensures that our service members receive the benefits they deserve while modernizing the policies of the VA.” Among the benefits offered to U.S. veterans, the VA offers loan guarantees for low-rate mortgages with no money down. Earlier this year, a constituent of Congresswoman Clark’s reported to her office that he had been denied this benefit based on his legal employment in the cannabis industry in Massachusetts. The VA informed her office that this source of income was not “stable and reliable.” In response, Clark sent a letter to the VA in May asking for clarification on their regulations relating to veterans employed legally in the cannabis industry, as well as advocating that the VA modernize its policies to reflect the budding role of the cannabis industry throughout the country. Over 200,000 Americans are working in jobs related to medical or recreational cannabis, generating $11 billion in sales annually. Most states have now legalized cannabis use for one or both of these uses.
