Potential candidates have until 5 p.m. next Thursday, July 25, to pull nomination papers to run for office. It’s late, but not too late and Assistant Registrar of Voters Carol Ann Desiderio has posted an updated list of candidates with three new names added to the field. Ward 4 Councillor Ryan O’Malley is facing a challenge in his bid for a third term from former Assistant City Solicitor and School Committee Member Frank Russell. A member of the Malden Historical Society, Russell recently published “An Early History of Malden.” Adam Weldai has stepped up to run for the Ward 5 seat on the School Committee, which opened up unexpectedly when Tara Beardsley announced she would not be seeking a third term. Weldai, an assistant middle school principal in Chelsea, served three terms on the Malden School Committee from 2010 to 2015. A former middle school history teacher, Weldai also served as interim principal of Forestdale School for the 2016-17 schoolyear. Ryan O'Malley Ward 4 Councillor faces challenger Frank Russell. In the race for the Ward 6 School Committee seat, local activist and public school advocate Joe Gray appears to be headed into a race with Renee Dean. Dean has been an active school volunteer and serves as the treasurer for the Forestdale PTO. Incumbents on the City Council who remain unopposed are Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe, Ward 2 Councillor Paul Condon, Ward 6 CounAdam Weldai running for Ward 5 School Committee seat. cillor David Camell and Ward 7 Councillor Neal Anderson. School Committee Members Michael Drummey, who represents Ward 1, and Jennifer Spadafora, who represents Ward 3, are also, so far, running unopposed. Malden Police celebrate Junior Police Academy graduation 617-387-2200 Friday, July 19 , 2019 Three former Malden Catholic Xaverian Brothers named in report on sexual abuse By Barbara Taormina X averian Brothers who worked at Malden Catholic High School were on a list of nearly three dozen names of members of the order who have been credibly accused of abusing children. The reports of abuse date back decades and include brothers who were assigned to St. John’s Prep in Danvers, St. John’s High in Shrewsbury, Xaverian Brothers High in Westwood and Malden Catholic. According to Xaverian Brothers, allegations of abuse are reviewed by a panel of professionals in psychology, law enforcement, cannon law and human resources. A General Superior makes the final decision on credibility of abuse accusations. “We view this disclosure as part of our commitment now to preventing abuse and hope that it may assist survivors of abuse in their healing. We also hope that our release of names will contribute to the process of restoring trust in Church leadership,” explained the order on its website. According to documents listing the brothers involved, Francis Jerome (William M. Burns), who was assigned to Malden Catholic from 1935 to 1938 and again from 1968 to 1974, is suspected of abuse that spanned over a period from the 1950s to the 1970s. Allegations against him were first reported in 2003, and include at least one Malden Catholic student. Jerome died in 1974. Brother Ronald (John J. Donovan) was assigned to Malden Catholic from 1972 to 1974. Allegations of abuse believed to have taken place during the 1960s were first reported in 1993 in New York City. Donovan died in 2000. Allegations of abuse were also reported against Brother Wenceslaus (Leo Gillis), who was at Malden Catholic from 1987 to 2004. While the order recognizes that the allegations against Gillis, which were reported in in Brooklyn in 2004, have a “reasonable possibility,” the Brothers also say a full investigation was not possible because of incomplete information. Gillis died in 2014. “The Xaverian Brothers want to continue this journey of repentance, transparency, and solidarity with victims as we renew our commitment to our mission ‘to manifest God’s compassionate love to all whom we meet in this journey of life,’” wrote Brother Edward Driscoll, General Superior, in a statement posted on the order’s website. “Please join the Brothers praying for continued healing for those who have been wounded by the evil of sexual abuse,” he said. $3.39 $2.45 GALLON GALLON We accept: MasterCard * Visa * & Discover Price Subject to Change without notice 100 Gal.
