It would tell of.... • The one-hitter pitched by Shawn Campbell of the Barons in June of 1983 with the DeMayo brothers, (Quadzilla) Paul & Mike, chipping in with four hits between them • Little Harvey Nadler retrieving jump shot after jump shot for Willie Barron as Willie honed his legendary hoops skills • Right-handed hitter Mike Maddaleni swinging late on a Peter Levine “fastball” and nearly hitting the tree we are talking about in right fi eld • Bruce Vining embarrassing opposing hoop players with pure athleticism and an array of impossible jump shots • Right-handed hitter Bobby Foley launching a moon shot to left fi eld off another Peter Levine “fastball” that still may be travelling to this very day • The whole Russo clan dominating the hoop court from early morning to the wee small hours of the evening • Catcher Dommy DiSario of the 1970 City Champ BRL Barons throwing out Jimmy D’Adarrio from the Stars trying to steal second, from the sitting position • Bruce Vining of the BRL Seals in center fi eld throwing out Bobby “Peanuts” Pelosi at fi rst base after Peanuts hit a shot up the middle that Bruce fi elded cleanly in center, letting fl y a rope to fi rst for the putout • Russ Garland hitting a mammoth shot to center for a round tripper, possibly his only hit in the BRL. MHS football star “Galooch” appearing in a cameo role for the injury-plagued Stars • George “Tommy” Hoffman stepping back and draining longrange (line drive) jumpers from the corner, double teamed with Bobby Willis’ long wingspan in his face! • Bobby Langston of the BRL Seals going from fi rst to third on one pitch To be continued... Five platters that mattered – making a lasting impression on me growing up in Malden: • “The Kink Kronikles” – 1975, mom asks what I’d like for Christmas. I mention the Kinks’ 1972 double LP “Kink Kronikles.” Lo and behold what do I wake up to Christmas morning? Yes indeed, the same album I have to this very day in my collection and the vinyl that launched my love aff air with If this old tree could talk: located in front of 273 Ferry St. at the very corner of Ferryway Green overlooking the park. the Davies brothers. Thank you, mother! By the way, she was the best gift giver, ever! • I have gone on record as to not quite understanding the genius behind the Ramones when they released their self-titled debut slab of vinyl “Ramones” (1976). But count me all in by late ’77 (or so) when I purchased the album at Strawberries (Dave Surette possibly selling me the vinyl) and placed the needle on the first track. Blitzkrieg Bop ever since! • In 1979 I asked sister-in-law Helen to pick me up an E.P. at Lechmere Sales in Cambridge. I was smitten by a song called “Rapper’s Delight” by a group called the Sugar Hill Gang. I wrote the name of the song as “Wrapper’s Delight” on a piece of paper and gave it to Helen having no idea at that point in time what the heck a “rapper” was. Love at fi rst hearing as the golden age of hip hop unfolded before my ears. • The release of Extreme’s fi rst album “Extreme” in 1989 was an epic moment in Malden/Medford history. And my life. Local boy makes good and all that – Gary, Paul, Patrick and Nuno taking Herb Alpert and A&M Records into uncharted waters. A&M playing nice until the song that haunts Gary and Nuno till this very day isn’t easily replicated. • Spending time in my brother Joe’s room when he wasn’t home circa 1970 – digging through his record collection – Parliament Funk, James Brown, “Little Stevie” Wonder, the Four Tops – but the record that hooked me and had the most play on Joe’s Magnavox console record player was the 1968 double L.P. “Diana Ross & the Supremes Join the Temptations”! I wore the album(s) out! Eddie Kendricks! David Ruffin! Dennis Edwards! Diana Ross! Angelic voices during the golden age of soul music! As Peter Falk’s iconic TV character Columbo would say, “Just one more thing, sir” – Sir Paul McCartney turned 81 years young last week. Thank the deity of your choice for Sir Paul and the Beatles. So many of us will forever remember that legendary night in 1964 when the Beatles were broadcast into our lives for the very fi rst time! With that said, I bring to you a review of the Beatles’ fi rst appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” by an old curmudgeon named Paul Jones. From Feb 11, 1964, and it does not hold up very well. “As I See It - (Ed) Sullivan Wasted Time with Beatles...” “If Ed Sullivan can fi nd no better use for the time allotted him on Sunday night than to devote it to such exhibitions as he presented last Sunday night, I suggest that CBS-TV fi nd something else MUSINGS| SEE PAGE 15 WE'RE OPEN! 8 Norwood Street, Everett (617) 387-9810 ANGELO’S A FULL SERVICE 1978-2023 Celebrating 45 Years in Business! s! The victim was identifi ed only as a 31-year-old male, who apparently sought medical attention at CHA Everett Hospital shortly after the incident on Sunday. It was the second incident in Malden in the past three weeks where a victim was shot. An alleged shootout between multiple parties in the lobby of the Overlook Ridge apartments on Malden’s east side, at the Malden-Revere city line, left a female victim with serious injuries, according to sources, and still hospitalized as a result. A suspect in that case was apprehended a day after that shooting, on June 19. Police responded to the call outside of the Main Street eating establishment and immediately began investigating the scene. A considerable part of the time spent by detectives from Malden Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) on Sunday appeared to be searching the parking lot located to the side of the restaurant between Main and Ferry Streets. According to police, at approximately 2:45 p.m., “Malden Police responded to the area of 421 Main Street for ‘shots fi red.’ Upon their arrival, multiple witnesses described a situation where an individual walked into the municipal parking lot while wearing a hood and skimask, eff ectively disguising his features.” According to police, the suspect – later identifi ed as Jeff erson Barillas – “purposely pursued the victim who had just left a local restaurant [New York Pizza] and was walking towards the vehicle he had arrived in.” Police said the suspect then “fi red 4 to 5 shots at the victim who was struck. The victim left the scene and responded to” CHA Everett Hospital, and police said his wound was “non-life threatening.” Chief Cronin said he was pleased with the work of his offi cers and detectives as well as the cooperation of some eyewitnesses at the scene, who provided very valuable information to the investigation. “It was through the extraordinary eff orts of our police offi cers, detectives, and eyewitnesses, that we were able to apprehend the individual responsible for the recent shooting that took place in our community,” Chief Cronin posted on Facebook after the arrest on Pearl Street. “The commitment to duty and exceptional professionalism of the offi cers involved, resulted in the swift resolution of this case, ensuring the safety and security of our city,” Chief Cronin posted on Facebook. “I would also like to acknowledge the collaborative eff orts of multiple law enforcement agencies that helped in the investigation.” “Lastly, I want to express our gratitude to the residents of our city,” Chief Cronin posted. “Your trust, cooperation, and unwavering support are crucial in our eff orts to maintain public safety.”

Transparency and collaboration are the cornerstones of Lissette’s campaign for Mayor of Malden. With this foundation, the tough conversations can be had that will lead us to a better and brighter Malden. As Mayor, Lissette will achieve this with the creation of an Office of Public Engagement (OPE). This offi ce would be bold in its work to create deeper relationships with our diverse and varied communities. City Hall’s main purpose is to make sure that all residents can access city services. This means fully engaging our non-English speaking residents, immigrant, and underserved populations, but also our disabled, teen, faith-based, LGBTQIA+, senior, and veteran communities on a daily basis. OPE would provide a two-way street that would focus on ensuring access to city services for all Malden residents, while also interacting with our communities on a daily basis to really understand their needs, wants, accomplishments, and issues. It will initially begin with staff ers hired for their connections and understanding of our communities, and will grow into an offi ce structure overseeing: • Quarterly town halls in various languages/issue areas. • Continue language translation and access services. Page 10 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, July 14, 2023 MVES teams with Diversity North Group to build inclusivity, equity M ystic Valley Elder Services (MVES), a Malden-based nonprofit aging services agency, recently partnered with Massachusetts-based Diversity North Group consultants (www.diversitynorth.com) to launch an organization-wide diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) collaboration. The year-long MVES DEIA Project will work to lead a cultural shift throughout the organization by offering teambased learning, coaching and skills development. The goal of this initiative is to enhance current efforts to provide equitable access to resources, support and opportunities for professional advancement for all team members. MVES CEO Lisa Gurgone shares, “Our goal is to understand: What can we do better as an organization to support our staff? How can we best honor the cultural differences among our staff and the communities we serve? What are the best practices for ensuring MVES systems and structures are equitable? I hope that continuing to build DEIA into our operating DNA will become business as usual at Mystic Valley. We are committed to learning how to do better as an organization because that’s the way we continue to enhance services to older adults and people with disabilities to live independently with dignity in a setting of their choice.” MVES – which serves Malden, Everett, Revere and seven neighboring communities – is committed to driving change in the community and views its partnership with Diversity North Group as an opportunity to engage its network in making tangible progress. “We will use this initiative as a platform for enhancing the dialogue with the individuals we serve, our Board members, and our partners about the importance of inclusivity and cultural competence as we work to meet the needs of the community,” Gurgone explains. Diversity North Group Principal Jasmine Montanez, the manager of the project, says, “We are excited to be launching this DEIA effort at MVES because of the wonderful work the organization provides to Massachusetts elders and those with disabilities. MVES is extraordinary in its diversity now, with over 300 staff speaking more than 5 languages, as well as embracing female leadership and older workers.” Law Offices of JOSEPH D. Research shows that, in general, social service agencies that prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion do better work. When employees believe they are heard, and when work is fair and well managed, organizations benefit through higher employee retention rates, a friendly and productive work environment and better interaction with consumers. “At Diversity North, we believe that to make true change, DEI must be embedded into the rhythm of the business. The goal is for organizations to develop and strengthen their reflective practices for inclusion and equity,” Montanez notes. MVES is proud to launch this critical initiative with funding awarded through the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Workforce Development Grant program issued by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services with resources from the American Rescue Plan Act. This initiative will run through late spring 2024. Magician Scott Martell LIFE ESTATES AND STEP UP IN COST BASIS O ne common dilemma facing the remaindermen listed on a deed is how tocalculate the cost basis of the real estate in question upon the death of the life tenant or life tenants. This is an important issue as the remaindermen need to know their cost basis in the event they subsequently sell the real estate or rent it out thereby requiring depreciation calculations. If, for example, a father deeded his home to his two children and reserved a life estate on the deed itself (essentially the right to use, occupy and possess the home for the rest of his life), upon the father’s death, under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 2036(a)(1), the fair market value (FMV) of the home at the time of the father’s death would be the starting cost basis in the hands of the children going forward. If the FMV of the home was $600,000, the law treats it as though the children paid $600,000 for the home. This of course helps tremendously to avoid or greatly eliminate any capital gains tax upon a subsequent sale of the home. What if the father and mother both deeded the home to the children with reserved life estates? In this situation, since the father deeded his 50% interest in the home to the children with a reserved life estate, upon the father’s death, only 50% of the property is stepped-up to FMV upon his death. Since the mother deeded her 50% interest in the home to the children with a reserved life estate, upon the mother’s death, only 50% of the property is stepped-up to FMV upon her death. As a result, the home would have to be valued at both the father and mother’s death in order to obtain the new cost basis in the hands of the children upon the second to die. You would take 50% of the FMV of the home upon the father’s death and add that figure to 50% of the FMV of the home upon the mother’s death. Furthermore, 50% of the FMV of the home would be includible in the taxable estate of each spouse upon his or her death. What if the father and mother reserved a life estate, as husband and wife, tenants by the entirety? Would that make a difference in the calculation? The answer is no. Upon the father’s death, he in essence gifts his life estate to his wife. This is referred to as a life estate pur autre vie. Upon the subsequent death of his wife, there will not be a step-up in cost basis of the husband’s 50% life estate given to her as she simply did not retain a life estate in 100% of the home. She only retained a life estate in the 50% that she originally gifted to the children. She did not retain a life estate in the husband’s 50% interest. Only he did. This is pursuant to IRC Section 2036(a)(1) dealing with retained interests. Joseph D. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, July 14, 2023 Page 15 Woman, 33, shot and seriously injured in Malden apartment building shooting on June 18 Somerville man, 35, arrested one day after incident and remains in custody Advocate Staff Report A 33-year-old woman who was shot in the lobby of a major apartment complex on the city’s east side was seriously hurt with life-threatening injuries, according to reports, and is still hospitalized after an incident on Sunday, June 18. The shooting came exactly three weeks before a second shooting, where a man was shot by a masked gunman in broad daylight in Malden Square, this past Sunday. (See separate story.) In both cases, Malden Police made swift arrests of suspects in the unrelated cases, with both shooting suspects still in custody. A day after the June 18 shooting at the Overlook Ridge apartments MUSINGS | FROM PAGE 3 to put in this hour of prime time. “Why Sullivan found it necessary to aid in the phony promotion of four rock ‘n’ roll exponents, all of whom resemble Moe from the Three Stooges, is beyond comprehension. And why he felt it necessary to ‘load’ the theater with screaming teen-age girls when he normally restricts his audience to grownups, is also a mystery. “It was obvious to those who saw the Beatles, four young fellows from Great Britain, that they have not attained their present notoriety on the basis of their musical talents, for the sounds emanating from their mouths were anything but melodic. “Shorn of their mop-like hairdos they would look and sound like many other inferior rock ‘n’ roll groups which are still attempting to keep alive the fad which died when Elvis Presley entered the armed forces. “There is nothing attractive about the looks or the sounds of the Beatles. “There is no reason why Sullivan should take part in the absurd campaign to make this group appear to be important. “But then Sullivan’s program has been on the skids for several weeks. I have noticed a general deterioration in the type of en– located at the Malden-Revere line – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Malden Chief of Police Glenn Cronin announced that Mohamed Abdulaziz, 35, of Somerville, has been charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a fi rearm without a license and possession of ammunition in connection with the June 18 shooting. He will be arraigned at Massachusetts General Hospital on Zoom at 2:00 p.m. on June 20, where he was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. Allegedly, around 2:22 a.m., Mohamed Abdulaziz entered the lobby of an apartment complex on Overlook Ridge Drive in Malden and discharged his fi rearm, striktertainment presented in at least three of the last four shows. “In catering to the screaming teen-agers who fi nd this group exciting, Sullivan has shown his contempt for the vast millions who used to fi nd his program diverting.” Postscript 1: Very few in Malden know the game of baseball better than M.H.S. Athletic Hall of Famer and 1970’s “Athlete of the Decade” Dave Caiazzo – just a handful like Bob Rotondi, Terry Matthews, Peter “Panama” Carroll, Kenny Mazonson, to name but a few. So, Cai was the fi rst to get back at me with his take on the best hitters seen in Malden. As always, Dave tells it like it is: “Well, I never saw Johnny Salmon play and only saw Billy (Croken) a couple of times. I know Billy was a great defensive catcher with his hitting taking a back seat to his defense. Frank Adorn once told me Billy was one of the very best defensive players he has ever seen. Also, I hesitate to include the BRL because most are good hitters at that level. With that said, Dennis (Damiano) was an exceptional hitter and a fi ve-tool guy in the BRL but never played in high school beyond his sophomore year. So, here are my top 5. At number 1, without a doubt, Steve Ring. Number 2, Carmine Cappuccio. My take on Carmine was that he had an uncanny ability to hit to the opposite fi eld and ing a 33-year-old female, who remains hospitalized at this time. The preliminary investigation suggests that the defendant entered the lobby targeting a male potentially with the intent to rob him. During the altercation the man who was targeted also discharged a firearm. That man has not been located at this time. This remains an active investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Offi ce, Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Offi ce and Malden Police. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Malden Police at 781-397-7171, via their text to tip line at 847-411 or online at maldenpd.com. I am not sure if he was trying to do that or not. Either way, it worked. Number 3, Steve Carpenter. Another guy who only played high school. Don’t know if he could have hit at the college level. But I liked him when I saw him. Number 4, Johnny Brickley (if we include him as a Maldonian) good hitter to all fi elds. Number 5 is a tie. Robby Santo was a late bloomer and improved a great deal in college which was obvious with his recent induction into the Flagler College Sports Hall of Fame. Paul Abbatinozzi ties Rob at number 5. Paul was a better hitter than Rob at MHS but from watching Rob improve after high school I will give it a tie. So those are my picks. I have seen a lot of good hitters since I played little league in the late 1960’s, but I can only judge by which players I actually saw.” Thanks for your always thoughtful (and honest) opinions, Dave. Postscript 2: My favorite line from Paul Jones’ Beatles review was, of course, the “all of whom resemble Moe from the Three Stooges.” First because myself and each one of my friends are 3 Stooge fanatics and two, picture if you can – John, Paul, George and Ringo sitting in their hotel room the next morning, reading the review, and saying to themselves, who the heck is “Moe” and what are the “3 Stooges?!” So much fun to think of! aavvyvy S avy avvy S oiorenniioor nior by Jim Miller Best Meal Delivery Services for Seniors Who Don’t Cook Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend some good healthy meal delivery options for seniors who don’t cook or get out much? Most home delivered meal programs across the U.S. deliver hot meals daily or several times a week, usually around the lunch hour, to seniors over age 60 who have problems preparing meals for themselves, as well as those with disabilities. Weekend meals, usually frozen, may also be available, along with special diets (diabetic, low-sodium, kosher, etc.). Most of these programs typically charge a small fee (usually between $2 and $9 per meal) or request a donation, while some may be free to low-income seniors who qualify for Medicaid. There are also some Medicare Advantage plans that cover limited meal service benefi ts. Meal Delivery Service Companies Another great option for your dad is to order him some pre-made meals online from a meal delivery service company. These companies provide a wide variety of tasty meal choices and will usually post the nutrition information for their meals right on their website. Most companies will also cater to a host of dietary and medical needs, such as low-sodium and low-carb meals, diabetic meals, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options. Plus, the ordering process is very easy. Depending on the company you choose, the food arrives either fresh or frozen and most deliver all across the U.S. Prices generally start at around $8 to $13 per meal, plus shipping, however many companies provide discounts or free shipping when you order meals in bulk. Page 16 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, July 14, 2023 LEAGUE | FROM PAGE 12 we started four freshmen and three sophomores on a regular basis,” said Freker, who began coaching at Malden High in the fall of 1982 and is now in his 41st season of coaching high school sports. “We took our lumps last year, but we did not quit and we competed every game.” “This year, we still had the youngest team in the state of Massachusetts, but that experience year made a big difference,” the Malden coach added, pointing out that Malden started three freshmen, three sophomores, three juniors and one senior – Greater Boston League AllStar Brandon McMahon – this past season. Malden won two of three “mini”-tournaments it competed in this past season, taking championships in both the Tornado First Pitch Classic in early April and then taking its fi rst title since 2019 in the 12th Annual Strike Out Colon Cancer Tournament, hosted by East Boston High School May 20-21. “We had two sophomore pitchers – Aidan Brett and Ryan McMahon – combine for a two-hit shutout (2-0 win over Watertown) in a tournament championship game over at East Boston. What team does that?” Coach Freker said. “We have a lot of experience and confi dence going into 2024 after pulling off stuff like that this season.” The Malden coach said this year was the fi rst season it was easy to see the results of a number of years of hard work and collaboration between Malden High Baseball, the Malden Public Schools Athletic Department, Malden Recreation, Malden Youth Baseball and Malden Babe Ruth Baseball. One of the most successful and enthusiastic participants has been the Malden Middle School Baseball Team, made up of players from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades and coached by Phil Cook, a longtime former Malden youth baseball coach, who is now in his fi fth year on the Malden High baseball staff . “Coach Phil [Cook] had done a tremendous job motivating and guiding those Malden Middle School players and it has become a great feeder program to Malden High baseball,” Conefrey said. “The middle school program has helped make the whole GBL baseball league stronger for those teams that participate.” “Nine out of 10 players who play in the middle school baseball program end up coming to Malden High School and playing on our Golden Tornado Baseball team,” Coach Freker said. “That is a credit to Phil Cook and Mr. Conefrey who had initiated and grown American Exterior and Window Corporation NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ALLAMERICANS: Revere High’s Sami El Asri, juniors JV Cunha and Medy Bellemsieh and sophomore Isaiah DeCrosta were named All-Americans at the Nike Nationals held in Oregon, after fi nishing in the Top Three nationally in a pair of events. Our coaches and present and former players umpire 90% of their games and through our close work with Malden Recreation and coordinator Joe Levine, we run several well-attended, free baseball camps for younger kids each year in the winter and the summer,” Coach Freker said. “We are very happy about the excitement building around baseball in the city of Malden right now and we are committed to working closely with organizations, parents and players to see that increase,” the Malden High coach added. “We can’t wait to have all these excellent young players in our baseball program when they get to Malden High School,” Athletic Director Conefrey said. “We promise their parents and families we will do everything we can to ensure they develop into the best student-athletes they can be.” **** Justin Flores named new EvContact us for all of your home improvement projects and necessities Telephone: 617-699-1782 Toll Free: 1-888-744-1756 Email: info@americanexteriorandwindow.com Windows, Siding, Roofing, Carpentry & More! He guided the Crimson Tide from 1992-2028, 26 years in all, with 12 Super Bowl State Championships. Before that? Jim “Tank” Agnetta, another former Everett High football standout, led the Tide for 9 years – 1983-1991. How about before THAT? Coach Amerino “Moody” Sarno was the football boss – seemingly for life, it appeared. He took over in 1955, after a sterling college career at Fordham, and coached until 1982 – 28 years – and with an impressive record of 128-116, including four state titles, all in the 1960s. (Courtesy/Malden High School Athletics) ball program. After going with only THREE coaches in 62 YEARS (!!!) ... for the past fi ve seasons, longevity has vanished from the Everett High football coaching lexicon, disappearing without a trace. Last week, for the third time in six years, a new head coach was named for Everett High football, with former UMaine assistant football coach Justin Flores being named the third new football head coach at Everett High in only fi ve seasons. Former Tide star Theluxon Pierre took the reins directly after DiBiaso for two seasons: 2018 and 2019. Between Thanksgiving and into the midst of COVID-19 in 2020, it was announced that Pierre was no longer head coach. No details were released nor speculated. In January 2021, it was announced that a former Tide star from the 1980s, Rob DiLoreto, was being named new Everett football head coach. DiLoreto resigned unexpectedly with little detail released in late May, just a few weeks ago. Now comes newcomer Justin Flores. For the fi rst time in hmmmm... EVER??... a head football coach who did NOT play for Everett High has been named football boss. The Woburn native confi rmed that he has accepted the head football position at Everett, replacing DiLoreto, who stepped down after three successful seasons. Flores grew up in Woburn and followed a family tradition of playing football for former Tanner coaching legend Rocky Nelson from 2006-2010. Flores did a postgraduate year at Tilton before heading to UMaine, where he played from 2012-2015, lettering in each of his four seasons as a wide receiver and punt returner. He spent a year as an assistant at Bentley before returning to his college alma mater for a six-year run as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. There is little doubt that those who follow and support Everett High football fervently hope that what has become a Tide coaching merry-go-round for one of the all-time high-profile programs of ANY sport in Massachusetts comes to an end. They’re hoping Justin Flores is here for the long run. **** Revere High quartet are named National High School All-Americans two ‘Top Three’ in the nation performances in Nike Nationals Hats off to the most successful outdoor track relay team in both Revere High and Greater Boston League history! Four members of the Revere High boys outdoor track program recently competed at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon. The four Patriots – senior Sami El Asri, juniors JV Cunha and Medy Bellemsieh and sophomore Isaiah DeCrosta – simply killed it. The Revere High relay whizzes finished second in the United States in the 1600 meter Sprint Medley Relay and third in the 4X400 meter relay. The foursome set a new school record for the Sprint Medley Relay (which is two legs of 200 meters, a 400 meter and an 800 meter) in a time of 3:37.18 and smashed their existing school record in the 4 x 400 with a clocking of 3:27.82. Not surprisingly, El Asri, Cunha, Bellemsieh and DeCrosta were all named National Nike All-Americans for their remarkable performances.
