Malden Public Schools Superintendent John Oteri, Malden Mayor and School Committee Chairperson Gary Christenson and MHS Principal Chris Mastrangelo have all singled out this class as a special one on a number of occasions, including at the June 6 graduation exercises. One key and all-important level of achievement that is particularly of note is in academics. According to Supt. Oteri, Malden High School Class of 2021’s 402 members deserve high praise as one of the top academic classes in city of Malden history. I was first elected to the Malden School Committee in 2005. When my current term expires on December 31, 2021, I will have served the public schools in Malden for nearly 51 years. Whether as a classroom teacher or a member of the School Committee, my one overarching goal has remained the same; to do what is in the best interest of our students and their parents. As a lifelong educator I, along with my colleagues on the School Committee, continue to be strong advocates for attaining social justice and racial equity for all students in grades Pre-K-through graduation. As a private citizen, I will continue to be a strong voice for expanding services for students whose first language is not English, and I will also be a voice in support of adding more counseling services to meet the social/emotional needs of all our students. Educating children requires that parents maintain a strong partnership with their child’s teacher. Establishing that partnership Leonard Iovino builds accountability, transparency, and mutual respect. There are a number of people to whom I owe a debt of love, loyalty and support over the past 16 years. First and foremost among this group is my late wife Joanne and our wonderful son Joseph who is always there with a shoulder for me to lean on. Joanne, who was an outstanding educator, taught English to eighth grade students in Malden from September 1968 to June 2005. My thanks also the citizens and voters in Ward 4 who supported my candidacy and placed their trust in my ability to make educationally sound decisions on their behalf. My sincere thanks to the hardworking and dedicated teachers at the Lincoln School and the Salemwood School who gave 110 percent each day they entered their classrooms. I was enormously proud to be their principal and colleague. To all of the many students I met over the past 50 plus years, it was a pleasure to have served you and your families. I hope that in some small way I was of help to you going forward. This would ensure that, over time, the additional four percent tax would continue to apply only to the highest earning taxpayers in the Commonwealth. The tax would take effect on January 1, 2023. The legislature must approve a constitutional amendment in two consecutive joint sessions before the question appears on the ballot for voter approval. The Fair Share Amendment was initially approved on June 12, 2019, in a 147-48 vote. The June 9, 2021, vote of 159-41 ensures the proposal will now appear on the November 2022 statewide ballot. his office celebrates Mai Du as she is named one of Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women’s (MCSW) Commonwealth Heroine for 2021. The team is proud to have nominated Ms. Du for this honor as she continues to dedicate her time and efforts to help improve the community of Malden. The Commonwealth Heroines are women who strive to make a difference and improve the lives of others within their community. They are leaders, mentors, volunteers, and innovators who dedicate their time and efforts to protect and represent the interests of those in needAs a Co-founder and Board Member of the Greater Malden Asian American Community Coalition (GMAACC), Ms. Du has worked tirelessly to improve language access, drive civic engagement, and make local government more accessible to Malden’s Asian American community for many years. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, she has worked with GMAACC and local mutual aid group Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors to deliver food and provide services to thousands of people in need. Furthermore, Ms. Du has also been a leading figure in the fight against recent wave of anti-Asian hate that has been spurred on by misinformation and misguided rhetoric surrounding the virus. In addition to this tremendous work, Ms. Du serves on the Board of Directors for the Asian Community Development Corporation and runs the Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academies in Malden Mai Du and Quincy. “Mai’s work over the years reflect the qualities of a true Commonwealth Heroine,” says Representative Ultrino, “She has brought the community closer together and served as a powerful voice for those in need throughout Greater Boston – particularly within Malden’s Asian American community. I would like to congratulate Ms. Du on this wonderful accomplishment and we are very fortunate to have Maldonians like her who are committed to making Malden a better and more inclusive community for everyone.” In celebration of the new Commonwealth Heroines Class of 2021, the MCSW will also be hosting a Zoom presentation featuring opening remarks and a slideshow presentation of the Class of 2021. The event will be live streamed on the MCSW Facebook page at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 23, 2021. Commonwealth Heroines will also be receiving a Heroine Package via mail that contains a letter notification of the award, their own printed copy of the program book and certificate to recognize their work within the community. ~ Letter to the Editor ~ Fair Share Amendment will make Commonwealth stronger, more equitable Dear Editor: The Fair Share Amendment – which would assess an additional tax of four percentage points on annual taxable income above $1 million and invest the proceeds in transportation and public education – has been discussed and debated for many years. It has been voted on three times in previous Constitutional Conventions convened by the Legislature, and has received strong support every time. In public polling, this proposal typically receives support from more than 70 percent of voters in Massachusetts. The reason why the Fair Share Amendment is so popular is that most people recognize that our wealthiest residents can afford to pay a bit more in taxes to help fund investments that expand opportunity and make our Commonwealth more just and equitable for all. Levine I t is said in Malden today, tomorrow and yesterday… If you haven’t heard by now, we shall celebrate the Saint Rocco Feast (Please, don’t call it a festival) once again on the streets of Edgeworth this August 6-8. Since my announcement last week, the biggest question I am being asked (besides will Animal Control Officer Kevin Alkins be leading the Procession in his comfortable air-conditioned vehicle like he does every year?) is, “Will the Grease Pole take place?” It is a work in progress according to G.P. organizers Tony Della Gatta and Nick Gizzi. Arrangements are being made to secure a yard to place the pole in, and recruitment of the crazy kids to climb it are taking place as we read together. Stay tuned. The lines out the door at Spadafora’s at the wake for Basil Rigano’s boy Chris were a testament to this wonderful young man’s life – beloved by so many throughout Malden, beloved by so many throughout Edgeworth. Just heard that Henry Pitts passed away after a long illness. Still wrapping my head around this. I have known Hank since 1969. He was Mr. Pitts to me until about 30 years ago. I have always called him Mr. Pitts out of respect, but this one time he quickly admonished me: “Peter, my name is Hank!” I have known Hank since my Little League days. I played ball and am friends with his two sons Mike and Billy and his daughter Donna. I have always loved and respected Hank, first as a wise baseball sage always willing to show us the correct way to play the game of baseball; then as an elder statesman in the neighborhood we all love so much, Edgeworth. Still wrapping my head around this. Thank you to Mayor Christenson and his staff, Super of Cemeteries Jimmy Cahill, City Controller Chuck Ranaghan, the Veterans’ Services Department, Parking Director Ron Hogan, Nick Pernice in the Controller’s Office and the many volunteers who helped make this one of the best Memorial Day celebrations in Malden’s history. The cemetery looked great, the concert was superb and the newly unveiled Korean and Vietnam Memorials are magnificent! Fine job, Mr. Cahill. More on the extraordinary job Mr. Cahill did in putting together this wonderful event. Rest peacefully, Rose P. (Kane) Hanson of Winthrop, formerly of Malden, 1933–May 31, 2021. More on Rose when I collect it. Ward 2 Councillor and longtime Edgeworthian Paul Condon suffered a devastating loss last week. He was such a kind and gentle man. And he has left me with so many wonderful memories. There was a 6-year age difference, so he allowed me to tag along with him...everywhere. He made sure I never missed a high school sporting event. And despite our age difference, we both shared our love for all sports. He was a wonderful husband, a loving dad, and a devoted grandfather. R.I.P. big brother, you will be sorely missed.” Who is better than Pete Caso and his Facebook page “All About Malden”?! Correct, nobody. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 18, 2021 Page 9 Northeast Metro Tech holds graduation ceremonies for Class of 2021 W AKEFIELD – Superintendent-Director David DiBarri and Principal-Deputy Director Carla Scuzzarella are pleased to announce the graduation of the 301 students in the Class of 2021 at Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School (Northeast Metro Tech). Northeast Metro Tech held four mini-graduation ceremonies, two each on Thursday, June 3 and Friday, June 4, smaller events planned before the state lifted its COVID-19 restrictions. Each ceremony contained graduates from four of the school’s 16 Career Technical Education paths. Graduates in each ceremony walked on to the School football field to different music, from the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” to the classic Queen song “Don’t Stop Me Now.” DiBarri praised the students for their commitment to career technical education amid the trying times of a pandemic. “You are resilient, capable, and hopeful – exactly what the world needs right now. With a career and technical education, you have a leg up. You have industry knowledge and hands-on experience that many of your peers don’t have,” DiBarri told graduates. “I firmly believe that each one of you has tremendous potential, and that your futures are bright.” DiBarri then challenged the graduates to reflect on the dreams they had during a yearplus of COVID-19 restrictions, and to run toward those dreams in the coming year. Dr. Scuzzarella spoke about the return to a post-COVID-19 world and about interpersonal contact, and how the Class of 2021 remained resilient. “You have been truly tested, and you have not faltered,” Scuzzarella said. “As the sign at the bottom of the hill says, You are on your way.” Valedictorian Victoria Vieira, a drafting and design student from Revere, reflected on the journey of the past four years. She then quoted Albert Einstein: “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one learned in [high] school.” “Although we many not always remember how to read Old English or how to balance chemical equations, we must remember our determination and the obstacles we have overcome,” said Vieira. “I urge you to continue taking that step forward, no matter how cumbersome life appears.” Salutatorian Victoria Fama, a drafting and design student from Malden, spoke about the obstacles the Class of 2021 overcame. “Our time at Northeast U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kevin Garosano (right) surprised his brother Bryan Garosano and presented him his diploma. Posing with them are their parents, Bryan and Kathleen Garosano. Salutatorian Victoria Fama spoke to the crowd. has brought us opportunities to be mentored by understanding teachers, build lifelong bonds with our peers and even find a sense of who we are as individuals,” Fama said. Class President Anna Falasca, an early childhood education student from Saugus, focused on the unexpected lessons learned along the way. “Class of 2021, you have taught me so much in a short time: strength, determination, perseverance and how to avoid Zoom,” she said. “We’re going to have one crazy story to tell one day.” The first of four graduations included a surprise presentation. Bryan Garosano, an HVAC student from Exeter, N.H., and formerly of Wakefield, was presented his diploma by his brother, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kevin Garosano. Sgt. Garosano, an armored crewman currently stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and a nine-year military veteran, had been home visiting his family a few weeks ago. The surprise of his return was well-kept. “He thinks I’m working,” Sgt. Garosano said, referring to his brother, before the surprise. Sgt. Garosano sat behind the stage, appearing when his brother’s name was announced. The brothers hugged as Kevin presented Bryan his diploma. Valedictorian Victoria Vieira spoke to the Class of 2021. Greater Boston League Baseball All-Conference & All-Star Teams are named Players from Malden and Revere named to GBL All-Conference Team; Gibbs Bros. are Everett All-Stars By Jason Mazzilli T he Greater Boston League (GBL) has announced its 2021 All-Conference and AllStar Teams and three sophomores made it onto some of the top spots. Malden High School sophomore Brandon McMahon was one of the top pitchers and hitters in the GBL and was named to the GBL All-Conference Team along with Revere sophomores Max Doucette and Mike Popp, both outfielders. Lynn English third baseman Angel Gonzalez was named GBL Most Valuable Player for 2021 and Lynn English first-year head coach Esteban Paula "Coach of the Year". Chelsea High School was named the recipient of the GBL Team Sportsmanship Award. Malden's McMahon was one of the top all-around players in the GBL this year, with a 1.07 earned run average and registering 27 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings pitched. He also hit .443 (17-for-39) with 14 RBIs. Three other Malden High players were named to the GBL All-Star Team including senior captain Liam Jordan, junior pitcher-first baseman Shai Cohen and junior Sam Solorzano, who was a key pitcher, second baseman and outfielder for Malden High. For Revere, seniors Calvin Boudreau (OF-IB-P) and Kasey Cummings (1B) and sophomore Chris Cassidy (2b) were also named to the All-Star team. Everett brothers Brandon Gibbs, a senior and Brian Gibbs, a sophomore were named to the GBL All-Star Team for 2021. AMENDMENT | FROM PAGE 4 late 1970s, economic growth and prosperity in our state and nation was broadly shared. Since 1979, however, average income for the top one percent has grown at an annual rate that is ten times greater than the growth of average income for the bottom 90 percent. In other words, a hugely disproportionate share of all new income and wealth over the past four decades has gone to those who are already very rich. This is not because working people aren’t working hard enough. In fact, they are working longer hours, and often multiple jobs. Worker productivity has increased an astounding 65% since 1979. And yet, working families are struggling to get by every day, living paycheck to paycheck. As this inequality has grown over the past few decades, Massachusetts hasn’t made the investments in public services that are necessary to make our economy work for everyone. Our public schools and colleges lack the resources they need to prepare students for the 21st century economy. We’ve let our roads, bridges, and public transportation infrastructure crumble because we haven’t investOutside Hitter Roberto Deng Feng with Head Coach Daniel Jurkowski. Deng Feng plans to attend Bunker Hill Community College this fall to major in hotel management. ed in maintaining and upgrading them. As a result, for many young people, the American Dream seems ever more elusive, if not downright impossible. While there are many factors that have contributed to such high levels of inequality, our state tax policy is one of these factors. Moreover, unlike the forces of globalization or rapid technological change or federal fiscal policy, state tax policy is within our direct control. Incredibly, lowerand middle-income taxpayers in Massachusetts pay a greater percentage of their annual income in state and local taxes than the highest-income taxpayers do. This is deeply unfair. The Fair Share Amendment would raise substantial new revenue to support public investments that are critical to our pandemic recovery and building a more just economy, and do it by making our tax system more equitable. It will provide funds to: • Continue implementing the Student Opportunity Act to ensure adequate and equitable funding for all K-12 public schools • Make high-quality public higher education more accessible and affordable for lower-income students and students of color • Expand access to high-quality, affordable pre-K education for working families • Improve our transportation system and infrastructure, including roads, bridges, sidewalks, multi-use trails, and public transit Critics of the Fair Share Amendment claim that millionaires will flee Massachusetts, especially now that remote work has become more popular. Yes, some wealthy people may retire to Florida or Arizona, where it doesn’t snow; but that happens already. The overwhelming evidence from detailed studies of state tax policy strongly suggests that the vast majority of high-income households will not leave the state simply because of a slightly higher marginal tax rate. After all, one of the advantages of making more than a million dollars a year is that you can afford to live where you want, and there are many other good reasons to stay in Massachusetts. In fact, investments in a stronger education system and improved transportation infrastructure will strengthen our AMENDMENT | SEE PAGE 22

Page 22 Savvy Senior by Jim Miller Golf Gadgets That Can Help Older Golfers Dear Savvy Senior, Do you know of any golfing equipment that can help older golfers? My dad, who’s 76, loves to play golf, but arthritis in his hands has made griping the club challenging, and his fragile lower back makes stooping over to tee-up or retrieve the ball a problem too. Is there anything out there that can help? Golfing Buddy Dear Buddy, There are actually a wide variety of adaptive golf equipment that can help older golfers who struggle with injuries, arthritis or loss of mobility. Here are several golfing products that may help with different needs. Gripping Solutions Gripping a golf club is a very common problem for seniors with hand arthritis or those who have hand or elbow injuries. To help alleviate this problem there are specially designed golf gloves and grips that can make a big difference. Two of my favorite gloves are the Bionic Golf Gloves (BionicGloves. com) that have extra padding in the palm and finger joints to improve grip. And the Power Glove (PowerGlove.com) that has a small strap attached to the glove that loops around the club grip to secure it in your hand. These run between $20 and $30. Another option is to get oversized grips installed on your dad’s clubs. These can make gripping the club easier and more comfortable and are also very good at absorbing shock. Oversized grips are usually either one-sixteenth-inch or one-eighth-inch larger in diameter than a standard grip, and cost around $10 per grip. You can find these grips and have them installed at your local golf store or pro shop. Or, for a grip-and-glove combination fix, check out Quantum Grip (QuantumGrip.com), which incorporates Velcro material recessed in the golf club grip and a companion golf glove that has mating Velcro material in the palm. Cost: $25 per grip, and $40 a glove. Upright Tools For golfers with back, hip or knee problems, there are a number of different tools that can eliminate the repetitive bending and stooping that comes with playing golf. For example, for teeing up the ball without bending over, consider the Tee-Up Foldaway by Zero Bend Golf. This is a 34-inch long-handled tool that has a trigger-style handgrip and a jaw that holds the ball and tee for easy placement. It costs $70 at ZeroBendGolf.com. For other stoop-proof tee-up solutions, see the Tee Pal Pro ($70, TeePalLLC.com) and Joe’s Original Backtee ($25, UprightGolf.com). ZeroBendGolf.com and UprightGolf.com also offer ball pickup tools and magnetic ball marker products that cost under $15. Or, if you just want a great all-around golf picker-upper, consider the Graball GrabAll Jaw – sold through Amazon.com for $10 for a package of two. It attaches to the handle end of your putter and chipper and is designed to pick up golf balls, flagsticks, putters and green side chippers. Reflective Golf Balls If diminished vision makes locating the ball challenging, Chromax golf balls (ChromaxGolf.com) can help. These are reflective colored golf balls that make them appear larger and brighter. Cost: $10 for a three-pack. Easy Carts There are also ergonomically designed golf carts that can help older golfers tote their clubs around the course. If you like to walk, CaddyTek (CaddyTek.com) and Clicgear (Clicgearusa.com) has a variety of three and four-wheeled push/pull carts that are highly rated for function and foldability. Costs typically range between $150 and $300. Or, for severe mobility loss, the SoloRider specialized electric golf cart (SoloRider.com) provides the ability to play from a seated or standing-but-supported position. Retailing for $10,500, plus a $600 shipping fee, this cart is lightweight and precisely balanced so it can be driven on tee boxes and greens without causing any damage. Federal ADA laws require that all public golf courses allow them. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 18, 2021 MALDEN: TODAY | FROM PAGE 6 sure what that means), cultural performances and much, much more, we are promised. Go to the City of Malden’s website for more details. Free parking at the CBD & Jackson Street garages! Please support local businesses this summer. See you in Malden Square (or Center) this summer! Kudos to the stringy-haired gentleman for continuing to shred (Zeppelin?) in front of 17 Pleasant St. on Tuesday, June 8 even as temperatures approached 100 degrees. Fill his tip basket up with greenbacks if you have the opportunity; he deserves it for that day alone. Malden is in for a real treat on Sunday, August 8 at the 91st Annual Saint Rocco Feast. Davina Yannetty brings her immense musical talents to the “Albert Spadafora Beer Garden,” making her San Rock debut as the first performer to ever entertain in the Beer Garden. The multitalented (piano, ukulele, drums, bass) East Boston gal boasts a deep repertoire of classic rock and 90s hits sure to get even the most dancing-averse MaldoAMENDMENT | FROM PAGE 20 economy, expand opportunity, and make Massachusetts an even more desirable place to live, work, raise a family, and build a business. With a 9% top marginal tax rate, Massachusetts would be in line with many other high-income states, including nians on their feet and shaking it like they just don’t care! Davina will hit the Garden right after the Procession about 3 and will play until 5. She will return at 8 to close out the weekend until 9. You are a real old-time San Rock pilgrim if you remember the days when San Rock organizers hung a large white bed sheet across Pearl Street and showed the 1943 classic “The Song for Bernadette.” True story. Ask Dominic. Disclaimer and just a reminder that the Saint Rocco Committee and the Grease Pole are two separate entities. The GP will happen, but it is not an officially sanctioned San Rock event. Now that I have got that out of the way, be sure mark your calendars for that second weekend in August and the famous Grease Pole event! There was not a dry eye on my face as I watched my precious, 11-year-old grandson Christian graduate 5th grade from the Burke School in Peabody. Elementary school over, middle school up next – I cannot take it. Bless you, Christian, but please slow the years down for Papa. California, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Minnesota, and Oregon. Even many red states have top marginal income tax rates well above our current 5% rate. We hope that our colleagues in the legislature will join us in voting one final time in favor of the Fair Share Amendment, sending it to the November 2022 “This is the end, beautiful friend, this is the end, my only friend, the end” – his heart shattered, his mind racing, his emotions overwhelming him, Nick Gizzi relates this Malden slice of life: “I’d like to take a moment and thank (Malden Police Commissioner) Sal ‘Butch’ Gennetti for playing a quick dad role for me Saturday morning going into church for our friend Chris Rigano’s services. I was running late... couldn’t get myself together, didn’t know how to work a necktie, stressed – and there was Butch who helped me out in the clutch...put my tie on for me...gave me a quick hug and sent me off. It’s the little things that mean a lot in times like this ya know.” Postscript: Edgeworth took it on the chin this past month. We lost three Sons of Edgeworth (and a Daughter also) in a very short period of time. Edgeworth is mourning to say the least. Many are shocked, saddened and confused by these events. Yes, I continue to go back to this Helen Keller quote; “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” ballot where the voters of Massachusetts will have the final say. Sincerely, State Senator Jason Lewis and State Representative James O’Day The Fair Share Amendment was approved in a June 9 joint session of the Legislature, 159-41.
