You don’t need superpowers to BE A HERO. You just need to care. And, during the 201516 school year, that’s exactly what you did. You may have given your time and energy as a volunteer in the classroom, at JA BizTown, JA Finance Park, JA Inspire, or you may have contributed to our mission by investing dollars that make a real, measurable difference for Kentuckiana youth. You sent a powerful message to the young people in our region that you believe in their ability to be financially capable and tenacious. You believe in their futures...and all the things they will one day achieve in their careers. You have helped further emphasize that the skills and concepts taught in Junior Achievement programs are concepts that we, as a society, cannot afford to overlook in our school systems. It takes just one generous donor to provide the means necessary to unveil a world of possibilities to JA participants. And it takes just one passionate volunteer to ignite a new sense of hope within these children. We would like to thank you for stepping up to the plate this year and helping to show more than 62,000 of our region’s kids the possibility of what they can do if they work hard. Because of your generous contributions and time, you have helped JA take another step toward our goal of giving this generation unparalleled hope for the future and the skills to turn their dreams into reality. Superpowers or not, you’re a hero in our eyes. THANK YOU. Christopher J. Kramer Chairman YOUR NAME IS IMPORTANT! We have carefully reviewed the names listed in this report. 2017 Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame Laureates Three legendary leaders... one spectacular evening! Three of Greater Louisville’s outstanding business and civic leaders were inducted into the Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame to benefit Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana. The event was held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at the Louisville Marriott Downtown Marriott Ballroom. A reception honoring the inductees began at 6 p.m. followed by the awards dinner at 7 p.m. The evening, hosted by Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana along with title sponsor WDRB-TV and dinner sponsor Crowe Horwath, LLP, recognized individuals for their significant contributions to the Greater Louisville business and civic communities. Those honored demonstrate business excellence; courageous thinking and actions; vision and innovation; inspiring leadership; and community involvement. They are role models for our future generations. The Laureates are chosen by a selection committee independent of the Junior Achievement Board of Directors, staff and WDRB-TV. The Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame was founded in 1982. These distinguished business leaders joined 110 previously honored Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame recipients: Diane B. JA teaches some of the most important skills a human being can have – a basic understanding of money, budgets, and business. These are lifelong skills that can encourage our young people to be successful in their future endeavors. For years Junior Achievement has recognized business leaders who have had a significant and positive impact in our Community and the 2017 honorees represent some of the best role models our children could ever have. Please join me in congratulating the 2017 Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame Laureates for all that they have done for Kentuckiana and for their contributions that will inspire future business leaders.” Theodore H. Year in Review JA ENTREPRENEURS DIVE DEEP Jefferson County Public Schools’ Central High School team members who won the JA Startup Pitch Competition were hired by Mayor Greg Fischer’s SummerWorks program to develop their product idea. Guided by the multi-talented performer and self-proclaimed “geek”, Divinity Rose, the team took a deeper dive into the world of entrepreneurs. The experience included job shadows at manufacturers to learn about assembly; visits with companies like Advanced Solutions, who demonstrated the future of medical devices; input from Amazon, who showed them product fulfillment techniques; talks by entrepreneurs; and hands-on learning of coding, welding, and marketing. Student Dionta McCraney reflected on the experience, “I learned to take chances... sometimes you need to jump off that ledge to see what’s in the water. (That’s) a big thing in business and the market.”

JA STUDENTS FLOOD INTO FORD PLANT More than 400 students from area high schools learned about careers in advanced manufacturing at the Ford Louisville Assembly Plant during the school year. JA Board Member Tami Hatfield-Kennedy and her colleagues conducted 18 separate JA Job Shadow events where students learned about careers in manufacturing, toured the plant, and practiced assembling parts in a simulated factory. In addition, students practiced the soft skills needed for success in the workforce. This high school capstone experience brings real-life messages to students as they make that leap into the next phase of their lives. JA INSPIRE BRINGS CAREERS TO LIFE JA Inspire, created by a coalition of educators and industry leaders and led by Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana, energized students, educators and business mentors during this pilot year. At the center of this work were powerful events that were massive, measured both in square feet and impact. Much like JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, all students participated in classroom curriculum before and after the event. The capstone experience of JA Inspire was an interactive, hands-on, career exploration for 8th-9th grade students. The events, held at the Kentucky Exposition Center, featured a showcase of careers attainable at regional businesses, non-profits, government agencies and educational organizations. October 2017 will bring a greatly-expanded JA Inspire event which will include 100 interactive career stations with 400 mentors who will share their career advice with nearly 10,000 students, engaging them with equipment, technology and the opportunity to “step into the shoes” of employees from all industries. JA GOES DIGITAL Junior Achievement is always striving to put forth programs that are not only on the cutting edge of the educational landscape but also closely aligned with state academic content standards. JA made progress toward our goal of moving all middle and high school programs to the blended learning format with the roll-out of the blended versions of JA Personal Finance® and JA Global Marketplace®. This approach merges JA’s proven volunteer-based delivery model with the latest technology to create a blended learning environment that provides a relevant, responsive and innovative portfolio of learning experiences. A U.S. Department of Education meta-study shows blended learning is more effective than online-only learning models, especially when it relates to at-risk populations. Add to it a passionate JA volunteer, and the inspiration starts flowing!

I took a nap, too! I learned a lot when I went to JA BizTown, but I’ll just name three things. One, I learned all about banking and keeping track of my money. Two, I learned to get along with people I didn’t know and that was a new experience for me. And, three, I learned to have fun, do my best and focus on what I was doing.” Arrica Burns - 5th grade student CAPSTONE SCHOOL SPONSORS First Savings Charitable Foundation Harrison County Community Foundation New Albany-Floyd County Education Foundation Daniel C.
