PAGE 2 E-NEWS ON THE CUTTING EDGE VOLUME 6, NUMBER 2 It is hard to believe that it is already February. It is even harder to believe that the Lenten Season begins on February 14, Ash Wednesday. I want to invite you to join us at 6pm on Ash Wednesday as we observe the beginning of Lent with the imposition of Ashes. Lent has historically been a time of solemn reflection for the Church. It is a time for the individuals to reflect on their relationship with God and look for areas for growth. Often people will give something up for Lent such as caffeine, chocolate, meat, or even television. In a way, they are fasting. This year I want to encourage you to do more than just give up something for Lent. In addition, I encourage you to replace what you have given up with a time of prayer, study, or devotion. Use the extra time to grow in your relationship with God. You could even replace what you’ve given up with an outreach project that will share the love of Jesus with others. By adding time with God through study or service, it will enable you to grow and mature in your walk with the Lord. In Christ’s love, Daniel Wednesday, February 14th, 6:00 pm ABQ DS, James Large to Retire The Rev. James Large will be retiring from his position as the Albuquerque District Superintendent on June 30th. He has served the NM Conference for 42 years. His first appointment was FUMC-Lordsburg in 1981, followed by Clint/Fabens, Belen, Asbury-ABQ, Director of Mission/Administration, and St. Paul's-Las Cruces. We will celebrate James' extensive ministry and contribution to the work of the NM Conference more fully during the 2018 Annual Conference

PAGE 4 E-NEWS ON THE CUTTING EDGE VOLUME 6, NUMBER 2 Our denomination is facing uncertain times as we struggle through debates over human sexuality – essentially how and whether we are going to include LGBTQ persons in ministry and the life of the church and how and whether we might maintain unity in the face of such diverse options, preferences, and practices. The task of navigating us through this time has been taken up by our Council of Bishops(CoB) and a specially appointed Commission on a Way Forward. While the Commission continues their work, the CoB has asked annual conferences to foster “listening sessions” for preliminary feedback on the proposed way forward (currently summarized in 3 loose “sketches”.) The NM Conference has scheduled four listening sessions throughout the Conference: February 18th – Western Hills UMC-El Paso at 3 pm March 4th – FUMC-Odessa at 3 pm March 18th – FUMC-Clovis at 3 pm April 22nd – Central UMC-ABQ at 3 pm The objective will be to share information about the process, learn more about the “sketches” discuss together and with our delegates where our values, hopes, and fears lie as a Conference. For more information, please visit the NM Conference Website: http://www.nmconfum.com/ Girl Scout Troop # 52515, that meets here at St. Paul’s, is putting together First Aid supply kits and they are asking for help in collecting supplies. Below is a list of needed items; sizes need to fit in a school supply box. Donations can be brought to the church and put in the collection container in the Narthex through February 20th. Needed: Adhesive bandages, Vinyl gloves, Pain relief patches, Elastic bandages, Ibuprofen, Roll (10 yards) paper tape, Roll (3 yards) sterile gauze, Tube antibiotic ointment, School supply box, Cotton balls and wipes, Tweezers, Gauze pads, Matches, or anything else that might be needed in a First Aid kit. The troop’s next meeting is Tuesday, February 6th at 7pm, and every other Tuesday, at the Church. Thanks for your support!

VOLUME 6, NUMBER 2 E-NEWS ON THE CUTTING EDGE PAGE 5 Good afternoon ROC friends and family, Jesus said, "Who do you say that I am?" Sometimes we doubt in who Jesus is. Even Thomas, a man who had walked and talked with Jesus for 3 years did not believe that Jesus was alive after his death. He was told by his closest friends that Jesus was alive. Thomas said, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." Jesus appeared to Thomas fully alive after his death, and Thomas said to Jesus, "My Lord and My God." Wow! Our doubts don't change the truth about Jesus. Our doubts don't change the resurrection of Jesus. Remember that Jesus is alive and he is for us all, My Lord and My God. ROC registration now open!
