Measure the rim of the banjo (not the rim of the head) from outside edge to outside edge straight across, to the nearest 1/16 of an inch. You should measure at 3 or 4 different places — especially on old banjos — because the rim can warp out of shape slightly and may not be perfectly round. Provided the rim is not severely warped, take the average of those measurements and order that size head. Has adaptor that slips over winged banjo wrench. NDTW 2 Determining crown height Note: We have changed our crown height (collar height) measurement system to match Remo’s. We no longer include the 1/8” tall mounting band in the measurement. There are three standard crown heights for banjo heads. Approximate measurements are: • Low = 3/8” • Medium = 7/16” • High = 1/2” • The crown height of a banjo head is best determined by looking at the relationship between the neck, the rim, and the tension hoop. The crown should be high enough for the tension hoop to sit on a plane below the level of the fretboard, but not so high that the mounting band bottoms out in the neck pocket before the head is tight. High and medium crown are the most common. Low crown is used mostly on banjos with archtop tone rings. Work your way around the rim, starting at one bracket and following it with the bracket on the opposite side. Don’t tighten brackets more than 1/4 or 1/2 turn at a time — be patient and make several trips around the rim.
