Financials NOTES TO THE CONSOLIDATED AND SEPARATE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER, 2016 statement of profit or loss. 2.8 Property, plant and equipment Items of property, plant and equipment are measured at cost or deemed cost less accumulated depreciation and accumulated impairment losses. Cost includes expenditure that is directly attributable to the acquisition of the assets. Property, plant and machinery under construction are disclosed as capital work-in-progress. The cost of construction recognised includes the cost of materials and direct labour, any other costs directly attributable to bringing the assets to a working condition for their intended use, including borrowing costs on qualifying assets in accordance with the Group’s accounting policy and the estimated costs of dismantling and removing the items and restoring the site on which they are located if the Group has a legal or constructive obligation to do so. Such assets are classified to the appropriate categories of property, plant and equipment when completed and ready for intended use. Depreciation of these assets, on the same basis as other property assets commences when the assets are ready for their intended use. When parts of an item of property, plant and equipment have different useful lives and are individually significant in relation to the total cost of an item, they are accounted for as separate items (major components) of property, plant and equipment. The cost of replacing a component of an item of property, plant and equipment is recognised in the carrying amount of the item if it is probable that the future economic benefit embodied within the component will flow to the Group and its cost can be measured reliably. The carrying amount of the replaced component is derecognised. The cost of day to day servicing of the property plant and equipment is recognised in profit or loss as incurred. An item of property, plant and equipment is derecognised upon disposal or when no future economic benefits are expected to arise from the continued use of the asset. Any gain or loss arising on the disposal or retirement of an item of property, plant and equipment is determined as the difference between the sales proceeds and the carrying amount of the asset and is recognised in profit or loss. 2.8.1 Depreciation Depreciation is calculated on the depreciable amount, which is the cost of an asset, or other amount substituted for cost, less its residual value (except for freehold land and assets under construction). Depreciation is recognized within “Cost of sales” and “Administrative and selling expenses,” depending on the utilization of the respective assets on a straightline basis over the estimated useful lives of each part of an item of property, plant and equipment. Leased assets are depreciated over the shorter of the lease term and their useful lives unless it is reasonably certain that the Group will obtain ownership by the end of the lease term in which case the assets are depreciated over their useful life on the same basis as owned assets. Strategic spare parts with high value and held for commissioning of a new plant or for infrequent maintenance of plants are capitalised and depreciated over the shorter of their useful life and the remaining life of the plant from the date such strategic spare parts are capable of being used for their intended use. Major overhaul expenditure, including replacement spares and labour costs, is capitalised and amortised over the average expected life between major overhauls. All other replacement spares and other costs relating to maintenance of plant are charged to profit or loss on consumption or as incurred respectively.
