PREP ARA TOR Y SCHOOL Preparatory Highlights Quiz Team Midland Champions and 6th in England A superb effort from the TC Quiz Team saw them crowned as Midlands Champions and sixth in England. Communication skills and teamwork were put to use as they displayed their general knowledge to triumph. Well done to Georgia Odell (Year 3), Sahil Ali (Year 4), Henry Clark (Year 5), William Maguire (Year 6). Spoken English Flourishing Children from across the Preparatory School flourished in this year’s prestigious English Speaking Board (ESB) examinations, achieving ten Distinctions, seven Merit Pluses and five Merits across five different exam levels. Preparatory School Swimmers in National Finals Many hours of training culminated in swimming success for four Tettenhall College pupils who represented the Midlands region at the ISA National Swimming finals in London in December. Jamie Welch (Year 4) swam for the bronze medal winning Year 4 boys 200m freestyle relay team; Sammy McDonnell’s (Year 6) team finished 4th in the Year 6 boys 200m medley relay team and both he and Oscar Ward (Year 6) competed strongly in the Year 6 boys 200m freestyle relay. They are pictured here with Senior School swimmer and fellow ISA National competitor, Ross Wontner. Academic Focus Children have continued to earn excellent results in their English and maths assessments which are carried out each term. They are designed to help us monitor and motivate each child, but very deliberately delivered as low-key and low-pressure assessments. We are establishing a healthy record of strong results without ever ‘teaching to the test’ - part of the unique character of the Preparatory School. In Spring 2019 for instance, in mathematics 76% of Years 3 to 6 performed at a higher standard than the national average and 73% outperformed the national average in reading. These achievements are testament to the excellent teaching staff and to the efforts children make day in day out - and they are something of an indicator of the genuine ambition we hold for every single child.
