WELCOME TO THE TETTENHALLIAN 2019 David Williams with long-serving pupils Lawrence, Hattie and McKenna (see page 27) Welcome to another edition of The Tettenhallian, which, thanks to the efforts of all our contributors and especially Alex Hankinson, Head of Marketing, will be in your hands earlier in the school year than any time I can remember. It is a necessary but somewhat thankless task to remind and harry busy staff and pupils to produce articles after the event, as people often want to move on to ‘the next thing’. However in the Facebook and Twitter era with instant news and feedback, the collation of a large amount of material is always worth it, enabling us to have a printed record of the highlights of our school year 2018/19. Of course, any such publication will inevitably reflect the ‘highlights’ and it is often the day to day learning that is left out, so I welcome Mr Wrafter’s contribution regarding the Preparatory School curriculum and the rationale behind it. Our aim is that The Tettenhallian also serves to reflect the values of the School and this has been a year in which these have been at the forefront of our thinking. Vision and values statements seem to be part of the fabric of any organisation in today’s world and schools are no exception and if done well should then permeate all aspects of our work. A successful version needs to describe who you are, your purpose, where you are going, your picture of the future and what will get you there. We have therefore consulted widely this year to put together a statement with which we all feel comfortable that we can work: To be the school of choice for outstanding personalised education, inspiring every pupil to excel academically and beyond. Front cover art, by George Shipway, Year 11 The values that permeate all our work are ambition (the high aspirations for our pupils), opportunity (academic challenge and the breadth of activities), community (promoting shared values, respect and global citizenship), creativity (freedom to set our curriculum and nurturing this in our pupils) and character (promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle, emotional resilience and staff and pupil wellbeing). I hope therefore that these pages do some sort of job in reflecting and breathing life into these values, but above all give the reader a strong impression of what Tettenhall College is doing to improve outcomes for its pupils. I am especially pleased to see a section devoted to the career paths of Old Tettenhallians which give us an insight into the true success of an education here. My final thanks go to all the staff who work tirelessly to implement the values listed above and make this such a rich and dynamic place in which to be.
