SENIOR SCHOOL Carding Mill Valley Year 8 geographers take to the great outdoors to study rivers in Carding Mill Valley Practical History Our historians experienced a progressive and thoughtful year. A few highlights include a Year 7 visit to Stokesay Castle, to study the evolution of a castle from fortress to fortified manor house, enabling them to appreciate that castles were continually adjusted over the centuries to accommodate their owners’ needs. The Year 8s explored the Tudor and Stuart periods, with particular focus on the English Civil War, Cromwell and how he introduced many strange laws such as an Act of Parliament effectively banning the Christmas festival. Year 9 pupils explored the 20th and 21st centuries. Pupils were deeply moved by the horrors of WWI and WWII, especially the holocaust. Although incredibly sombre lessons, the pupils approached them in a mature way and gained a lot. A more light-hearted lesson followed with pupils working in groups to bring one of four decades to life. They dressed up and explained everything about their allotted decade’s fashion, music, politics and technology. Seeing pupils dressed up as the Spice Girls with ‘wanna be’ blasting out whilst they were explaining all about the 1990s certainly took me back to my teenage years!
