from the directors Dear Friends, d At the Regional Food Bank, we expanded our outreach, made many new friends, and did more than ever to help our hungry neighbors in 2017. We had a tough beginning to the year because we were in the middle of our expansion project and our offi ces and distribution dock were torn up. But we worked through the challenges, and by the second half of the year were utilizing the new space and operating much more effi ciently. We thank everyone who has supported this expansion project with fi nancial and in-kind support, and look forward to completing our capital campaign soon. We are proud and grateful that we were able to provide 38 million pounds of food to our member agencies in 2017, enough for 31 million meals. Equally rewarding is knowing the quality of that food continued to improve, with 80% consisting of meat, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and other nutritious food. I constantly hear from agencies that the fresh produce we provide is highly desired and greatly appreciated by the people they serve, and that they could never serve so many people in need if not for the Food Bank. We are committed to continue upgrading everything we do in 2018. I thank our dedicated staff , Board of Directors, volunteers, and food and fi nancial donors for caring so deeply and contributing so generously to our work. Sincerely, Mark Quandt Executive Director Photo by Vincent Giordano Photgraphy Dear Friends, In my short time with the Food Bank, I have had the great privilege to be reminded, over and over again, why this region is such a special place to live, work and raise a family. Every day, thousands of people in the Hudson Valley struggle with food insecurity – working families, senior citizens, children, even veterans. In response, thousands of people contribute time, fi nancial support or food donations to help out friends and neighbors in need. Some people are motivated by their own experiences with hunger (“I know how powdered milk tastes,” said one of our long-time volunteers). Other folks simply recognize that a daily meal is a basic human right, and that our communities are so much stronger and healthier when we all have what we need to thrive. It is a privilege to see this compassion on display as we work to alleviate hunger in the Hudson Valley. Thank you for inspiring us – and for giving us hope. Paul A. Stermer Director, Food Bank of the Hudson Valley

The Food Bank is a charity near and dear to my heart. There are two primary reasons I donate. One is the “bang for the buck”. For every dollar I give, the Food Bank is able to multiply that amount so the end result is more food for more people! I also give because I’m aware of so many people not having sufficient food/nutrition. Not only do I read about it, but I’ve seen it with my own eyes as a former teacher in a poor, rural school district. Having enough food to eat should be a right of everyone regardless of circumstances. I aim to be a very small part toward making this happen! -Jan Newport, Donor Photo by McPherson Photography

However, for too many the question isn’t “what” but “is.” Is there any food left in the house? Is there any money to go to the store? Is there a chance we can have a meal today? time and talent donors Volunteers play a vital role in the Food Bank’s work and allow us to accomplish more than we ever could on our own. Volunteering in the warehouse at the Regional Food Bank really gave me a great perspective on the impact one individual can have in fighting hunger. The Volunteer Coordinators did an amazing job of making the connection between the work we were doing that evening and how it would benefit our community. It made me want to get involved as much as I could. From volunteering your time, donating food, giving money, organizing collection drives, or just spreading the word, there are a tremendous number of ways one person can make a difference in combating food insecurity in their local community. -Brian Wolters, Board Member Dick Raeder Amber Ricuitti Rieff el Family Joel Riley Celia Rivet Ellen Rizzo Sarah Robinson Al Roeser Pat Rogers Mike Rosen Kyle Rueckert Rueckert Family Mary Beth Sankowski Jim Santamarina Karolina Schabses Larry Schillinger Steven Schreiber Dan Schryver Bill Schwartz Sebben Family Marty Shields Jayanth Shivamurthy Mike Sikule Nicole Silvestro Kathy Slosberg Deb Smead Arielle Smith Raymond Smith Esther Sosman Spooner Family Barb Stampfl i Greg Sterling Nancy Stern May Stewart Ann Sullivan Frank Tambasco Michelle Taylor Karen Tedesco Ted Thompson Jeremy Thrane Cathy Torbitt Kristin Tully Lakshmi Tumati Sr. Betsy Van Deusen Mendy and Mason Varga Annette Vermilyea Leona Verstandig John Vogel Ella Wade Sophia Wade Earl Waldron Andy Walton Nida Wasseem Bob Watson Lucas Weis Adrian Whitford Lisa Whitney-Buck Brian Wolters Alexa Wyszomirski Yanoff Family Nadine Yarter Theresa Zarrelli Mike Zavisky Rick Zimmer Margaret Zollo 9 Photo by Vincent Giordano Photgraphy

The staff of the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley extend a special thank you to all who helped us in 2017 with food donations, fundraising, volunteer eff orts, and in a multitude of other ways. We are grateful for the time, energy, and resources our generous community provided to ensure we were able to help as many people as possible in their times of greatest need. thank you Photo by Vincent Giordano Photography how you can help donate time and talent Volunteers are vital to the Food Bank’s operation and contribute in countless ways. Sorting food, picking produce at our Farm, or raising money at a fundraising event—there are endless varieties of enjoyable, rewarding tasks that volunteers perform every day. make a monetary or in-kind donation Financial donations sustain the Food Bank and enrich the larger community by providing nourishment, dignity, and a sense of sharing to all involved. Funds come from grants, special events, and contributions, and each donation makes a meaningful diff erence. In-kind donations come in many forms, from printing to paving and more. These donations allow the Food Bank to provide more food to hungry people. Food donations are at the core of the Food Bank’s work. Food companies donate their edible but unsaleable food, and individuals and organizations conduct food drives at all times of the year. Non-food items like paper goods and cleaning supplies are also donated. These products are provided to food pantries, soup kitchens, and other agencies serving people in need. donate food Did you have a great time volunteering in our warehouse or on the Farm? Spread the word! Let your friends know, and encourage them to volunteer! Find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to keep up with what’s going on at the Food Bank, and share our pages with your friends. With your help, we are alleviating hunger...together. spread the word
