National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month in a symbol of unity. May is characterized by six national observances highlighting the contributions of those who have served. MAY 1: LOYALTY DAY & SILVER STAR SERVICE BANNER DAY MAY 3 — 9: PUBLIC SERVICE RECOGNITION WEEK MAY 8: VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY AKA V-E DAY OR VE DAY MAY 12: MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY MAY 16: ARMED FORCES DAY MAY 25: MEMORIAL DAY WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR MILITARY & VETERANS ★ Display the American Flag at your home ★ Send a care package to a soldier ★ Encourage elected officials at all levels to recognize our military and veterans ★ See someone in uniform or know a veteran? Thank them for their service or surprise them with a coffee, dessert or drink ★ Donate to a veteran or military charity ★ Reach out to a veteran or military family in need PATRIOTIC BOWS Show your appreciation for our Lake Ashton Veterans with a red, white & blue bow on your mailbox post. Available at the HFC, Pro Shop or from a Lake Ashton Veterans Association Auxiliary member. (Sorry — not available at the Clubhouse.) Bows are $5 each. Display on your mailbox post from May 1st to 31st. Get a bow for your golf cart and bicycle and show your patriotism and appreciation year round! 4TH ANNUAL ARMED FORCES DAY GOLF TOURNAMENT The Lake Ashton Veterans Association will be hosting the 6th annual Commander in Chief Golf Tournament on MAY 16 (Armed Forces Day). Proceeds go to fund veterans-related charities, Freedom Flights, and scholarships for junior ROTC cadets at Winter Haven and Lake Wales High Schools. The tournament is open to everyone, and the fees are $40 for members and $50 for non-members. This is a “Pick Your Foursome” event, and the format will be a 4Player Scramble. (If you do not have a foursome, we will put one together for you.) There will be cash awards for individual teams, as well as awards for every participant affiliated with the winning service. The price includes your entry and lunch after the event. Sign up at the Pro Shop with a check payable to LAGM starting May 1. Come on out and determine which service has bragging rights for 2026! OPERATION SHOW OUR COLORS The weekend of MAY 23 — 24 is “Operation Show Our Colors,” when residents are encouraged to line their property with U.S. Flags. In addition, the LA Veterans Association will line community entrances and the HFC and Clubhouse with flags. Let us all do our best to show our love of this country and our veterans. CEREMONY AT THE VETERANS MEMORIAL Everyone is invited to gather at the Veterans Memorial by the Clubhouse MONDAY, MAY 25 at 9 am for a remembrance ceremony facilitated by the Lake Ashton Veterans Association (LAVA).
