(continued from p. 34) Do you know that Lake Ashton has its own Olympic swimmers? (Well, sort of.) Some members of the LA Swim Club swim in the Senior Games, which used to be called the Senior Olympics. So, they used to be Senior Olympians. Maybe a stretch … but they are dedicated like Olympians; they aim to swim like Olympians; and they know the many physical, mental, & health benefits of swimming. Swimming is unlike any other aerobic exercise because it exercises almost all parts of the body with no constraints from gravity. This makes it ideal for most people, especially those with osteoarthritis or foot problems. Swimming also decreases arterial stiffness, a risk factor for heart issues. One also breathes differently when swimming. When you run or bike, your breath tends to be shallow and you exhale forcefully. In swimming, it’s the opposite and that is more beneficial. It can even improve your posture as swimmers backs tend to arch and stretch in the water. Those looking for a buddy with whom to swim or an organized workout should consider joining the LA Swim Club.
