PICKLEBALL NEWS By John Savala LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB By Shelley Miller The Lake Ashton Democratic Club is holding their On July 5 the Lake Ashton Pickleball Association held a mixed-partner type tournament in which partners were randomly selected for each game they played. Players played five games lasting 10 minutes, or until one team scored 11 points. Each player’s personal point accumulation for all their games was totaled at the end to determine the winners. Prizes were $25, $15, and $5 in Ashton Tap & Grill gift cards. For the men, Earl Schley and Carl Boast placed first and second, respectively. For the women, it was Sue Morris and Diane Holman. Spirit awards were also handed out to Mark Taylor and Sherry Hynoski. A total of 26 players participated in what was a very fun format that allowed players of different levels to play together. Thanks to the participants for coming out, the organizers, and the support staff for putting on a very well-coordinated event. The LAPA officers continue to address the deficiencies of the pickleball courts that were brought up and discussed at the last meeting. President Cal, VP Chuck and Treasurer Lisa met with the LAIICDD supervisor in charge of facilities on July 12 to discuss some of those issues to try to get his support for making needed changes and improvements. Topics discussed were repainting and resurfacing the courts and the problem of balls rolling under the fence. As of this writing, members are waiting to find out if the meeting was successful. It is going to take a concerted effort by all members to make these changes happen by showing up and speaking up at the CDD meetings and writing emails to the CDD supervisors.
