COBOURG G R E E N H O U S E 501 THOMPSON ST, COBOURG, ON. A Legacy in Bloom: The History of the Cobourg Greenhouse Poinsettia Delivery: Spreading Holiday Cheer Established in the 1980s, the Cobourg Greenhouse began as a modest operation on Charles Street, focusing on providing plants for municipal spaces. Over the decades, it has transformed into a vital hub for the community, supplying a diverse array of flowers, shrubs, and greenery for the town’s parks, public gardens, and seasonal displays. Now located on Thompson Street, the greenhouse features an impressive 7,000 square feet of growing space capable of nurturing up to 80,000 annual plants. This abundant capacity allows for the creation of approximately 300 hanging baskets, 70 miscellaneous containers, and 90 individual flower beds, contributing to the town’s vibrant floral displays. Beyond its role in beautifying the community, the greenhouse is instrumental in various local projects, including holiday plant deliveries to retirement homes and its renowned summer hanging baskets. Thanks to the dedication and expertise of its horticulturists, the Cobourg Greenhouse continues to thrive, skillfully blending tradition with modern practices while enhancing Cobourg's charm throughout the year. Behind the Blooms: A Year with Our Horticulture Team As the seasons change, so too does the rhythm of our dedicated horticulture team, who work year-round to bring beauty and life to our community through the plants and flowers they nurture in the greenhouse. Each season holds its own special projects and traditions, and no two months are ever the same. 47 As winter settles in, the greenhouse transforms into a vibrant display of red, pink, and white poinsettias, grown to perfection. These festive plants are more than just a holiday decoration—they represent a gesture of warmth and goodwill. In December, our team loads up their trucks and delivers hundreds of poinsettias to local retirement homes and community partners, spreading holiday cheer and brightening the spaces of those who need it most. This annual tradition is a labor of love, bringing joy and seasonal beauty to the heart of our community. Meet the Green Team: The Visionaries Behind Our Blossoming Community At the heart of our thriving horticulture program is Rick Cromlish, a passionate green thumb with years of experience bringing natural beauty to life. Under his guidance, the team works seamlessly throughout the year, turning seasonal planning into stunning results—from the festive poinsettias that spread holiday joy to the lush hanging baskets that adorn our streets in summer. Together, Rick and the horticulture team blend creativity with hard work, always looking ahead to the next project that will make our community bloom even brighter.
