CIMARRON TRAIL LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Submission deadline 20th day of the month for the upcoming newsletter please. Send to: amckinney@ammkting.com By Amanda & Mi chae l McK i nney Hello everyone! We are new (well, somewhat anyway) to the group and thought working with the newsletter would be the perfect way for us to get to know everyone. I (Michael) have been a longtime admirer of Porsche and was a member of this chapter back in 2001-2008. After a few year break, I was ready to get back into the Porsche world. I (Amanda) am a brand new to the Porsche community and experienced my first autocross a few months ago. Be patient with me as I am still learning the lingo but I will get the hang of it eventually. Together we drive a 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera. Cheers, Amanda & Michael McKinney

PAGE 3 CIMARRON TRAIL PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE By J ason To l l i son Welcome Cimarron Region PCA members to 2018. As your new President I am looking forward to an eventful and adventurous year for all of us. I have a lot of passion for Porsche vehicles, engineering, and brand. Since before I could drive I lusted over the 911 series, the sexy 904, the formidable 917K race car, and my favorite the 550 Spyder. The curved body lines and focus on performance over trends and fashion is part of the magic I admire with the German mark. I have only been a CRPCA member since 2015, but in that short time I have met many wonderful people. My first activity as a member was participating in an autocross. That opportunity to really experience the superior handling and maneuverability of my car in a safe and controlled environment was exhilarating. The members and volunteers there were welcoming and encouraging making the me feel right at home. That was it, I was hooked. Next came the event that solidified my future as a volunteer for our club – Oktoberfast. I had no idea what to expect. I had agreed to work on the grid where the cars are safety checked and staged for their time on the track. Seeing the drivers and their cars for the club race from all over the country was exciting. Meeting local club members and seeing how much fun they were having with their cars in the D.E. event made me want to get my car on the track. But I think the biggest and maybe the most impressive part of the event was realizing that it would not be possible without our club volunteers. All types of volunteers (young, old, male, and female) were working together to pull off an unforgettable weekend for everyone involved. I was so impressed with the organization I have volunteered to help with as many driving events I am able to attend. I would like to thank our previous president Joy Jones for outstanding service and putting extra effort to support several roles. I also want to thank D.E. chairs Beverly Carlile and Wendell Karr-ake for helping produce exciting Driving Education events at Hallett, Tom Ellis for his work as Treasurer, and Rick Hardmeyer who did a great job as Secretary. We talk about how important volunteers are to the club and it may sound repetitious but honestly the PCA cannot work or exist without them. Please also join me in welcoming all of the new board members. Our annual Christmas Party at Five Oaks Lodge again the most attended in CRPCA history. The Toys for Tots drive with Jackie Cooper was a success as well. Please look forward to these events again this year as well as some new and exciting additions to the growing schedule we are planning for the coming year. I see the PCA as an enhancement to the ownership of our Porsches. Offering vast resources of technical support, driving activities, and social events the car club increases our connection with the best automobiles ever made. Jason Tollison, RPCA President

Thank you to Jackie Cooper Porsche for hosting and providing the chili lunch, it was fantastic as always. Also, thank you to the many Cimarron Region PCA members who turned out for a beautiful drive thru the Oklahoma country side, and their generous support of this very worthy cause.

PAGE 8 CIMARRON TRAIL ZONOTES By J on J ones Welcome to 2018! 2017 went by so fast, I can hardly believe it. The older I get, the faster time passes. When I was 15, I was complaining to my Dad one day about how slow time was passing waiting on my 16th birthday. “Just wait”, he said in that typical Dad fashion, “You’ll see the other side soon enough”. Pop of course was right, as I now know. In 2017 I completed a major-for-me project, the building of a 944 track car. As I approached the finish line, I was dreading that first turn of the ignition key, the first chance for the engine I had rebuilt to run. It is always a little scary, at least for me, but it started up and ran fine. An almost twoyear project was a success! I’ve had it out on the track at Hallett twice now, and I look forward to the DE season coming up. In 2017, I was also appointed the Zone 5 Representative. Zone Rep is not something you campaign for – PCA typically looks for people who are less concerned about being “on the National Staff”, than they are about believing in putting the membership first. I was genuinely surprised when I was approached by my predecessor, Lynn Friedman about the job, and I thought about it for a long time. Some truly wonderful folks supported my nomination, and I am honored by their confidence and support. As I continue to grow into the role of Zone Rep, I hope to do justice to that confidence and support. Prior to being Zone Rep, I hadn’t had much experience with how the club functions at the National level. I attended my first National Board meeting in February and came away very impressed. Impressed with the leadership of Caren Cooper and the rest of the Executive Committee. Impressed with the financial transparency and accountability – you might be shocked at how much money passes through PCA ever year – and impressed with the vision that the National Staff has for the future of PCA. PCA Parade is nearby next year, in Osage Beach Missouri, and if you are going I hope you will take the opportunity to attend the open-to-all-members Board Meeting. I think you will be impressed, too. Our Club is in good hands. Zone Rep is occasionally referred to as a “middle management” position. Not having much affection for the term middle manager, I prefer to think of it as an ambassador and an adviser – an ambassador for the EC and an advisor for the Region Presidents. I have no real authority to tell people what to do, only to coach them to do things the PCA way. In some cases this means pointing out when they are doing things wrong – so diplomacy is a must. Case in point – at a DE last year, I observed the event chair authorize drivers to go on track with their convertible tops down. Which is not in accordance with PCA DE Guidelines. “What are they gonna do, fire me?”, the chair replied when I asked him about it. We’re all volunteers – that is a common refrain by the way – but that is not the point. The point is our insurance program is precious, and all of us, not just the Zone Rep must be vigilant to Elements of Risk and minimize it wherever possible. Part of the role of Zone Rep is to visit all of the Regions in the Zone over the course of the year.

PAGE 9 CIMARRON TRAIL ZONOTES (CONT) By J on J ones In most cases I have been made to feel welcome by the Region Presidents and I have had a wonderful time meeting all of the different PCA members throughout the Zone. And you know what? They are all like you…the people that I have met over the year in Zone 5. They are fans of all things Porsche, they all have their favorite PCA events to do – whether Social, or Autocross, or Drives – the PCA menu has something for every Porsche fan. What makes PCA work? YOU DO. Yes, you pay dues, you attend events, you read Panorama. But beyond that, you get involved. You volunteer. You pitch in and help out. And this year is no exception – many Zone 5 Regions will have new officers for 2018. I thank each and every person who has stepped up, because without you, PCA would not work. One of the tag lines PCA uses is “Fueled by Volunteers”. And this is not just clever marketing. It is the absolute truth. A brief story – In 2012, I inherited the role of Club Race Chair in my home region. It was a bit of a rocky start that year, but since then it has become one of the most fun, the most rewarding, and the most exciting things I do every year. Why? Aside from the thrill of being involved with the great folks in PCA Club Racing, especially the Race Stewards and Scrutineers, I collect dinner tickets on Saturday night. I get to meet most of the drivers, most of their companions, crew, volunteers and workers. As I collect the tickets, I can meet every single person at dinner – and everyone is happy and having a great time in Cimarron Region. There is nothing more satisfying than that. The Thank You’s and Great Job! comments are not about my ego - it’s about being a part of helping to make the event happen for people. THAT is what being a volunteer is about. Sharing in the enjoyment that people experience. We are all busy. We all have our lives and time commitments. But there is nothing – NOTHING – more satisfying than being involved. And PCA is a great place to get involved. I hope each of you had a great Christmas Holiday – and here’s to PCA and all of our regions in 2018. Happy New Year! - Jon Jones, Zone 5 Representative

PAGE PAGE 12 CIMARRON TRAIL CIMARRON TRAIL 2017 AUTOCROSS RECAP 2017 was an outstanding year at autocross! We had lots of fun and learned some great driving skills along the way. 2018 promises to be even better! For those that missed the Christmas party, the 2017 overall Champion was Randy Kaplin and the 2017 Ladies Champion was Beverly Carlile. Congratulations on an outstanding season! If you are curious about autocross, but have never been to one of these events, lack of prior experience is no reason to miss out. Experienced drivers are always willing to ride along with you, and show you the “ropes.” Driving “against the clock” is the perfect way to learn car control and your confidence behind the wheel, which is invaluable in any kind of driving situation. You will be on the course by yourself, which heightens the safe nature of this type of event and the main goal is to improve your time by sharpening your driving skills. The competition is friendly and it’s as much a social event as it is a driving event. Participants who attend at least 8 counting events will receive a 2018 Autocross shirt at the Christmas Party in December. For more serious competitors vying for the season long championship, points from their best 9 of the 12 counting sessions will be totaled to arrive at their final scores. The coveted, or not, Conehead Award, will also be presented at the end of the year to the driver who hits the most cones throughout the season. “If you’re not hitting cones you’re not driving hard enough”-Gary Bernard Practices and clinics are FREE! Counting sessions are $10 each. Come on out, and let’s have some fun! I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone that helps out at the events, be it set up, break down, time keeping and spotting; I could not do it without you! I would also like to thank our head driving instructor Gary Bernard for helping out with the walk throughs and tips for all the participants! We are looking forward to another outstanding season in 2018! A schedule will be posted online and in the newsletter as soon as it is finalized! - Mike Fugate, Autocross Chair
