T own Manager Scott Crabtree and Fire Chief Michael Newbury recently announced the arrival of a new Saugus fire engine, which they said will improve the Saugus Fire Department’s ability to safely respond to emergencies and provide a major benefi t to residents for years to come. Measuring 31 feet long and weighing 46,500 pounds, Engine 1 carries up to 750 gallons of water and was custom-made based on the Saugus Fire Department’s needs. Engine 1 features a heavy-duty Enforcer chassis and TAK 4 independent suspension system designed for maximum maneuverability and tight turning radiuses. The fi re engine boasts a galvanized steel frame and is outfi tted with state-of-the-art hoses, breathing apparatus, thermal imaging cameras and other lifesaving equipment that fi refi ghters utilize on a day-today basis. Firefi ghters are training on the new Engine 1, which was custom-built by Pierce Manufacturing to meet the Saugus Fire Department’s specifications. Saugus Fire Chief Newbury commended Town Manager Crabtree for always prioritizing community health and safety, noting that the Saugus Fire Department’s entire frontline fl eet has been replaced under his watch. “I want to thank the Town Manager for his steadfast commitment to public safety,” Chief Newbury said. “Consistently updating our fi re apparatus and equipment helps to keep our fi refi ghters safe on duty, while ensuring our residents receive the highest level of protection on calls for service.” Town Manager Crabtree credited Chief Newbury for his leadership and vision to advocate for critical public safety capital improvement projects, such as new fire engines and ladder trucks.
