Page 4 THE REVERE ADVOCATE – FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2026 RHS ALUM | FROM Page 1 education policy and bridge the gap between policy makers and teachers. Currently we are doing research and advocacy on important issues surrounding adolescent literacy. For example, Massachusetts is referred to as number one for education, but recent data shows that we are only number one for some meaning. We actually have some of the biggest disparities in academic achievement. We just started working together in the summer, and we have already got to hear from some important people in the policy world as well as get advice on how to give testimony, write op-eds, and advocate for issues at the school and local levels. “I am finding the experience super useful and exciting because I get to collaborate with amazing teachers across the state from Massachusetts Teachers of the Year to PhD candidates! Our advisor Kimmy Tremlett, is an amazing veteran teacher that leads our sessions and helps connect us to important people like state lawmakers or advocacy group leaders. “Currently I am part of a smaller group that is working with the state to inventory existing district reading screeners. This will develop an improved literacy screener for multilingual learners and provide recommendations to teachers for assessing their multilingual students’ literacy in English and their home language. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of Teach Plus at this point in my career because of all of the intelligent and hardworking teachers I am working with. I really value hearing from their different experiences across districts, subjects, and the age of their students. Even when we all come together for our meetings after a long day of school, everyone still has so much enthusiasm for learning and sharing ideas that it makes the experience really worth it. For any current teachers that are eager to make more of an impact in and outside of the classroom but don’t know where to start, I would recommend joining.” According to the Teach Plus website, “During the 2026-27 Policy Fellowship, educators will collaborate with coalition partners, district leadership, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), legislative leaders, and state education policymakers to help bring classroom-tested literacy solutions to a state where just 42% of 3rd grade students could read profi ciently on the state 2025 English Language Arts assessment. Selection into the Fellowship cohort was highly competitive. Fellows join a well-established regional network that includes two Massachusetts Teachers of the Year and a National Teacher of the Year. This year’s cohort includes several teachers with stand-out credentials, including a Milken Educator Award winner and an educator serving on a state department of education advisory panel. Teach Plus trains Policy Fellows in policy analysis, research, advocacy, and communications, including storytelling and op-ed writing, so rigorous data and fi rsthand classroom experience from educators reach decision makers and the public directly.” Lifelong Revere resident Eve Lescovitz (middle row, in fl oral dress) with the 2026-2027 Teach Plus Fellows.
