THE REVERE ADVOCATE – FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2026 Page 3 City Council tackles traffic safety, development and rental regulations By Anthony Boyd T he Revere City Council took up several issues aff ecting residents during its Aug. 10 meeting, with traffic safety, rental regulations, aff ordable housing and neighborhood cleanliness among the major topics of discussion. The meeting kicked off with a motion from Ward 5 Councillor Angela Guarino-Sawaya asking the city to explore a senior home safety visit program. The proposed program would bring together city departments, including the Fire Department and Department of Health, along with other local community organizations to provide free safety assessments for elderly residents. The proposed assessments could include replacing smoke detector batteries, changing furnace fi lters, identifying trip hazards, installing grab bars when possible, providing emergency contact forms and fall-prevention education. Adrienne Sacco-Maguire, the city’s emergency preparedness manager, said several of those services are already available through city departments and community partners but acknowledged that residents may not always be aware of them. “There are many departments doing the work,” she said. “Maybe people don’t know enough about it.” Sacco-Maguire highlighted partnerships with the Red Cross, Revere Fire Department and Mystic Valley Aging Services. She said Mystic Valley served nearly 2,000 homes in 2025, including home services, inspections, caregiver support and Meals on Wheels. The council placed the motion on fi le for further discussion. Traffi c safety also came up during the meeting, with councillors and residents discussing ongoing concerns about speeding and dangerous driving on city streets. Harris Street was among the areas discussed, with residents calling for additional measures to improve safety in neighborhoods where traffi c problems have been reported. Several residents raised concerns about speeding, dangerous driving and a lack of enforcement in residential neighborhoods. Carol Smith of Sewall Street said drivers coming from Beach Street onto Harris Street have been speeding through nearby residential streets and ignoring stop signs and “Do Not Enter” signs. She said the problem has created concerns for families and residents in the area. “I see it every day,” Smith said. “And that’s my concern. You need more enforcement.” Larry Smith, also of Sewall Street, called for additional enforcement against drivers who block intersections, a practice commonly known as “blocking the box.” Kathleen Heiser of Endicott Avenue described speeding on her street as “really scary,” particularly because of the number of families with young children moving into the neighborhood. Development was discussed during the council’s Zoning Subcommittee report.
