Approximately 31,000 associates in the northeast walked off the job last Thursday around 1 p.m. and are still on strike. According to Stop & Shop spokeswoman Stephanie Shuman, the company has not proposed any changes to paid vacation time, holidays or sick leave for current associates. New full-time associates (hired after Feb. 23) will earn five sick days at the beginning of the year. Healthcare costs would increase slightly over time. “Current associate cost for family health care is $26/week,” Shuman said. “That would increase to $30/week, as of July 1, 2019; $34/week, as of March 1, 2020 and $38/week, as of March 1, 2021.” Shuman went on to say that the company is proposing to increase its pension fund contributions to maintain current accrual rates for full-time and vested part-time associates. Previously accrued pension benefits are locked in and will not be cut by the company, she said. The proposal does not address co-pays for medical services. Minimal changes to prescription co-pays have been proposed, according to Shuman.
