Approximately 31,000 associates in the northeast walked off the job last Thursday around 1 p.m. and are still on strike. According to Stop & Shop spokeswoman Stephanie Shuman, the company has not proposed any changes to paid vacation time, holidays or sick leave for current associates. New full-time associates (hired after Feb. 23) will earn five sick days at the beginning of the year. Healthcare costs would increase slightly over time. “Current associate cost for family health care is $26/week,” Shuman said. “That would increase to $30/week, as of July 1, 2019; $34/week, as of March 1, 2020 and $38/week, as of March 1, 2021.” Shuman went on to say that the company is proposing to increase its pension fund contributions to maintain current accrual rates for full-time and vested part-time associates. Previously accrued pension benefits are locked in and will not be cut by the company, she said. The proposal does not address co-pays for medical services. Minimal changes to prescription co-pays have been proposed, according to Shuman. The car sustained significant damage after it crashed into the water last Tuesday morning at 655 North Shore Rd. into the waters off Rumney Marsh Reservation at approximately 7:36 a.m. Witnesses told firefighters when they arrived that a man was still trapped inside the sinking car. “The airbag deployment made it difficult to see inside the vehicle, which at this point was more than three-quarters submerged,” said Captain Robert Fortuna. “Lt. Griffin, realizing the situation could only get worse and time was critical, without hesitation, made the decision to enter the water and attempt a rescue. They waded out chest deep in 43-degree wind-driven chop to find a man struggling to keep his head above the rising water.” Fortuna said it took the efforts of both rescuers to open the driver’s side door against the water pressure and current. Once open, the man, weak, bruised, disoriented and unable to help himself, was pulled from the vehicle, placed on his back and helped to safety. Fortuna said it was a team effort and that time was critical. RESCUE | SEE PAGE 5 NOW OPEN!

FROM PAGE 15 T ith the new delayed start to the season that was implemented last year by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) to avoid any baseball and softball postponements because of snow-covered fields, teams still a few extra days off as a result of rainy days. But finally last week, it was time to play ball. Naturally, in the early going, the play on the field would be something less than satisfactory for the coaches of the respective teams in these games, but if they can somehow find a way to scratch out a win or two they’ll take it until the rustiness wears off as a result of not playing real regular season games for quite a while. For coaches like Joe Ciccarello, the Revere High School softball top boss, they recognize that there will be some erratic play, but if a win or two comes they will shed few complaints until they know their athletes are adjusting to a new season. ots opened up the 2019 campaign last week against nonleague host Chelmsford, and the visitors were able to still come home with a 6-5 triumph. “It was a bit sloppy early on defensively, but we still jumped on them for three runs in the first,” said Ciccarello. Adrianna Fusco and Eve Lescovitz were able to get on base for Alexis Iacoviello and Olivia McManus, who drove them home with clutch hits. Danielle Dion then knocked in Iacoviello with another hit to account for the third tally. McManus was in the circle in this game, and she pitched well, according to Ciccarello. The Revere hurler had seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and three earned runs. The Patriots had a 5-4 lead late in the game before Adrianna Keefe produced the allimportant insurance run that scored Lynzie Anderson, who was running for McManus at the time. As fate would have it, the Lions did score another run in the home half of the seventh, but because of Keefe’s clutch swing the Pats were able to hold on for the victory. But Tuesday’s home opener versus Everett at St. Mary’s Field did not go as well on the scoreboard. “We came into the game thinking we can win just by showing up, but Everett dropped six runs on us in the top of the first, and we never recovered from it,” said Ciccarello. “Sloppy defense and a lack of focus combined with no intensity was a bad recipe against a hungry Everett team.” The Crimson Tide ended up beating the home team by a score of 8-3. The Patriots took on host Salem on April 17 (after press deadline), before non-league Austin Prep comes to St. Mary’s Field on Saturday for a noon game. They will be at Lynn Classical on Monday and Medford on Wednesday before they come home again to face the Somerville Highlanders on April 26. All three games will start at 4 p.m. Baseball Pats even after four games By Joe Mitchell he Revere High School baseball team, which is coached by Mike Manning, has begun the season, and after four games they are exactly at the .500 mark with a 2-2 record. The Patriots opened things up with a 9-3 victory over nonleague East Boston on April 6. It was more of the same against Greater Lawrence last Thursday, April 11, and that resulted in a 9-1 triumph. But the beginning of the Northeastern Conference schedule didn’t go as well. Everett pinned a 16-2 loss on them Tuesday morning before Salem took them down, 9-5, on April 17. The Pats hoped to bounce back into the win column against host Beverly on April 18 (after press deadline) before returning to the friendly confines of Merullo Field on Monday afternoon versus Lynn Classical, starting at 4 p.m. Advertise in four free local newspapers and online! The overwhelming response and turnout topped each of the previous 15 trips, not to mention the abundance of seals and porpoises spotted on each cruise. “We were blown away by the record breaking numbers,” said Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay President Tani Marinovich. “Our mission is to connect people to the harbor, so we were delighted to see such a great turnout.” Aboard Massachusetts Bay Lines’ boat Freedom, families, neighborhood groups, and individuals from Boston’s communities and beyond were eager to see what the clean water of the Boston Harbor had in store for them. The last cruise of the day embarked onto the harbor in 75-degree sunny weather – a great turnaround from the projected overcast skies. Although the charismatic macrofauna were a bit hesitant to appear for the passengers, as the cruise motored toward East Boston, a plethora of seals and even a few porpoises made an appearance. In the moments where there were no sightings of aquatic mammals, Save the Harbor staff donned their pirate hats and sang the sea chanty “Haul Away Together” to remind those around them that if they work together, just as the pirates did as they hoisted the sails, they can accomplish big things. “In continuing our mission of sharing the harbor for the public to enjoy, Save the Harbor is hosting seven more free cruises to Spectacle Island and Boston Light throughout the summer and fall months,” said Marinovich. “Check out the remaining Share the Harbor cruise dates on Save the Harbor’s blog at blog.savetheharbor. org, which includes registration links.” Save the Harbor/Save the Bay would like to thank Massachusetts Bay Lines for their generosity in hosting us aboard Freedom and making it possible to venture out onto the harbor for each safari, while also giving guests great information about Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s Share the Harbor cruises are free to the region’s families all spring, summer and fall. their surroundings through historical narration.
