It was the first time the two ancient Greater Boston League rivals had gotten together on the gridiron in three seasons, as Everett had stepped away from a regular GBL slate and played an independent schedule the past two fall campaigns. But the series resumed in Game #133 Friday in a matchup that dates all the way back to 1893. Both teams came in with identical records, and a monster crowd packed the Pearl Street, Malden venue. Both teams came in with identical 2-1 overall records and off of close victories the previous weeks. Everett’s 22-19 road victory over Catholic Conference power BC High turned a lot of heads, especially on the heels of a banner performance by freshman Tide quarterback Michael Walsh, who tossed a pair of longbomb TDs. Malden came in led by junior running back Jayden McGuffie, who has ruled the roost for the past two seasons on Nate Morelli played the “Jimi Hendrix-style” National Anthem before the game from the roof of the Macdonald Stadium press box. With the victory, Everett extended its latest series winning streak to six games — not having lost to Malden since 2015 — and upped its overall historical, all-time series lead to 72-586. The 133-year-old series began in 1893. Everett quarterback Walsh threw two more touchdown passes — giving him 7 TD passes on the season, among the Division 1 leaders — and also scored on an 11-yard run himself, closing out the Tide scoring in the fourth quarter. Malden averted the shutout when senior Arioc Akre got the crowd going when he broke free and raced up the sideline in front of the Malden bench for an 81yard kickoff return touchdown with about nine minutes to play in the game to cut the lead to 286. That was one of the few highlights on the night for Malden, which evened off its record at 2-2 with the loss, while Everett improved to 3-1. But it was still a fortuitous evening for the all-time career rusher, as he reached an impressive milestone, passing the 4,000-yard mark; he now sits at 4,023 yards overall on 457 carries. For this season McGuffie went over the 600-yard rushing mark in just four games, now at 617 yards overall. Malden did show some spark early, driving as deep as the Ev
