As someone with family members who have health risks, I worry about them every day during this pandemic. And as a candidate for Malden City Council At Large, I want to see a city where everyone is safe, welcome and thriving. When I talk with voters about what would make them safer, I hear a wide range of concerns. These include: • Good crosswalks on busy streets, especially for older and disabled residents • Getting more people vaccinated to keep our kids from getting sick • More mental health services and addiction treatment for people in crisis • Emergency food pantries and temporary housing for families in need Last week, this newspaper published an op-ed which tried to use scare tactics to split Maldonians on important public safety issues. This was an attempt to shut down conversation with bumper sticker slogans and paint over my true positions. Instead of alarmist rhetoric, we should focus on addressing the full spectrum of concerns that are critical for safety in our community. In my campaign, I am advocating for common-sense approaches to public safety and law enforcement that have broad support in Malden. I support creating more alternative emergency responders, like having social workers and counselors to answer nonviolent 911 emergency calls for service. I have been a member of Mayor Christenson’s community advisory group on law enforcement policies.
