With intermittent, limited pickups by replacement workers not nearly enough, the city — and 17 other North Shore communities — remains embroiled in the worst regional health emergency since the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and 2021. It has been a true honor to serve our community in this role over the past few years. I have dedicated myself to ensuring our city government remains accessible to all residents. Transparency is a core value for me, as it fosters trust between the community and Gerry D’Ambrosio Attorney-at-Law Is Your Estate in Order? We need leaders who are honest, hold one another accountable, and conduct themselves with professionalism. At the same time, we must move beyond division and avoid wasting time on petty disputes. By working together, we can navigate the challenging times ahead. I am proud of the work I have done for affordable housing both in my role on the city council and through my personal commitment. I have been dedicated to advancing affordable housing initiatives in Malden by serving as a board member on the Metro North Housing Corporation and on the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Housing Committee. The combined efforts on both resulted in 14 units at the Bread of Life for home ownership, which is fully occupied today, the Bryant Street affordable housing project and a project at the former Salvation Army site in Malden. Transparency and public trust in local governance is crucial and one of my top priorities. Since being elected I post weekly agendas on social media channels and led the charge for a City Council Hybrid Technology policy. As part of the tech committee, we helped make it possible for the community and elected officials to have remote access for all our meetings. Access to green space is vital, particularly in urban areas. It is essential to protect our parks and ensure they are available to Karen Colón Hayes Councilor-At-Large everyone. One of the reasons we bought our home in Malden over 30 years ago was its proximity to the Middlesex Fells Reservation and the Malden River. That is why when I was approached by community members, I advocated re-establishing the Parks and Recreation Commission. I am also the council liaison for the open space committee and have attended all meetings to support the roll out of this plan. Walking in nature is something we do as a family often and we are also a family who uses public transportation and bike riding as a means to travel. None of our adult children own cars, and two of them don’t even have drivers licenses. That’s why ensuring safe streets is incredibly important to us, and why I am committed to continuing to collaborate with organizations like Malden Safe Streets and Bike to the Sea. My career has been deeply centered on working with youth, beginning with supporting at-risk young people in an outward bound program, tripling the size of the summer youth employment program and continuing today with the establishment of the Malden Youth Council to increase youth civic engagement. Mentoring our young people helps them navigate challenges with greater confidence and it’s why I will continue to provide this support to our youth in any way that is helpful. Finally, I am proud to be the daughter of a union president, and the director of the Hispanic Inmate Needs Department in the federal prison system in New York - among the first Puerto Ricans to hold such a position. Because of this legacy, I stand firmly in support of our unions, openly demonstrating my solidarity by joining picket lines and offering assistance wherever it’s needed. We have much more to do together! I remain steadfast in moving forward, regardless of the challenges and obstacles put before me, with my focus firmly on the people of Malden. Page 6 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, July 25, 2025 NEWS | FROM PAGE 1 to the level of a visceral threat of violence described by Mayor Christenson that day. The health emergency is real, however, and is a threat to Malden residents’ lives along with the other communities whose trash pickups have been disrupted by the strike, which began July 1 when Republic Services workers, who are members of Teamsters Local 25, walked off the job, citing demands for better wages and benefits. Also on the front lines of the Malden trash crisis is longtime Malden Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Bob Knox, who, along with the Mayor and other city officials, has been dealing with the strike and the trash woes all day, every day. “It’s like a 100-degree blizzard out here dealing with this for the last 17 days,” Knox said in an online news report shortly after a press conference where Mayor Christenson and five other regional mayors — from Beverly, Canton, Danvers, Gloucester and Peabody — filed a lawsuit in Essex Superior Court in Salem on July 17. The lawsuit sought injunctive relief demanding Republic Services fulfill its contracts by picking up the accumulating trash and garbage and also paying the municipalities’ already incurred costs of responding to the crisis locally. “The accumulation of trash and recycling throughout the municipalities has resulted in nuisances and sources of filth and causes of sicknesses,” the complaint stated, citing infestations of rats, insects and other pests due to the overwhelming trash piling up. In Malden there have even been flocks of seagulls causing unsightly messes picking at the trash and garbage. In court on Tuesday, a lawyer for Republic says the company is doing its best to pick up trash during the strike, saying that “service is near-normal” — which has been strongly challenged and disputed by the communities affected. Essex Superior Court Judge Kathleen McCarthy-Neyman questioned how effective the community’s order would be if Republic said it is doing the best it can, according to an online report: “If they’re doing everything they can, what is the benefit of issuing an injunction making them Malden DPW Director Bob Knox speaks after a press conference where Malden’s Mayor Gary Christenson announced the city was joining 5 other communities in suing for an injunction against Republic Services. No ruling had been forthcoming as of the Advocate’s press time. “I don’t think there’s any validity to what [Republic’s] defense attorney said at all,” Beverly Mayor Michael Cahill said in WCVB-Channel 5 report. “The second-largest waste and recycling hauler in the nation, who tout that at every turn with us, bring resources to our commuMid-grade Regular 2.83 3.35 3.52 $3.47 Over 47 Years of Excellence! 1978 - 2025 ULS Full Service $3.09 Order online at angelosoil.com nities and pick it all up.” “That’s just not happening right now,” the Beverly Mayor added. The Teamsters union has accused the company of not negotiating in good faith as they bargained for a new contract. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, July 25, 2025 Page 7 Dolphins Seal Three-Peat in Thrilling City Series Finals T he Dolphins have etched their name into Malden Youth Baseball history with their third consecutive championship victory, capping off a stellar 10–2 regular season and a dramatic postseason run that showcased grit, talent and heart. Led by seasoned third-year players Jacob Christie, Michael Menard and Nick Cook-Tran, the Dolphins once again dominated the field. These three have never known anything but victory, having lifted the championship trophy every year of their tenure. They were joined by returning champions Dmitri Camell and Lorenzo Solis — both securing their second straight title — and all five earned spots on the All-Star roster representing Malden in an exhibition series against East Boston and Revere. Fresh talent added a spark to the squad, with 11-year-old Giovanni Cambriello and an eager-to-learn group of 10-yearolds — Christopher Faria, Levi Kruckenberg, James Melendez, Jaxon Nickerson and Ramon Ostolaza — stepping up throughout the season. City Series Highlights As regular season leaders, the Dolphins earned a first-round bye and watched as the Dodgers upset an undermanned Red Sox squad. In their semifinal matchup, the Dolphins unleashed a shutout masterpiece. Jacob Christie pitched five dominant innings, allowing just one single while striking out 14. He also led the offense with two triples and a single. Cook-Tran added two doubles, and Camell chipped in with a double. Final score: Dolwalking four. In extra innings, Cook-Tran took over on the mound for the Dolphins, quickly extinguishing Red Sox hopes with a walk followed by three consecutive strikeouts. The bottom of the seventh brought heart-pounding drama. With two outs, Christie reached on an error. Cook-Tran singled. Camell laid down a textbook bunt to load the bases. Cambriello then put the ball in play, and Christie dashed home for the walk-off score, sealing the Dolphins' dynasty with a 4–3 championship victory. Not everyone is as lucky His wife, Trish Micheli, a former second-grade teacher at the Beebe School and volunteer coordinator at The Immigrant Learning Center in Malden, did some research and found news articles about children and adults drowning in riptides there over the years. “It was scary, reading about all these tragedies and thinking about the danger I was in,” she said. Female surfing pioneer The couple also learned that Quintana is a female surfing pioneer who competed in what was once considered a male surfing sport, longboarding. Recognizing that there were many women who wanted to surf but were intimidated by “macho” males, she founded the “International Association of Female Surfers in Puerto Rico” in 2004. “I knew this was an extraordinary story that needed to be told and thought about doing a documentary over the past five years,” Mark Micheli said. “But I also knew it would take a lot of work and some money.” So it wasn’t until he applied and received a small grant from Emerson College last year that he decided he could do this. He explained that Carlos, who is a professional translator, provided translations for both Micheli and Quintana during a video interview conducted on the balcony of his apartment rental. It was then that he learned what drives Quintana to continually risk her life to save others. “She opened up to me, explaining her motivation,” he said. “It was a very emotional moment that I’m proud of capturing on film.” Film festival dreams Micheli said he applied to about a dozen film festivals in hopes of getting more people to learn about this extraordinary woman and the dangers of riptides. Some are local, including the prestigious GlobeDocs Film Festival held at The Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square in the fall. “That’s the one I’m hoping the most to get into,” Micheli said. He explained that he and Trish attend the “documentary shorts” part of the GlobeDocs program most every year. “We love it. They show about a half-dozen shorts, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.” Other festivals he applied to are farther away, including New York, California, Puerto Rico, Dublin and Belgium. “It’s a long shot,” he said. “But how often am I going to get a chance to have a film of mine shown on the big screen? The project, which was developed by The Neighborhood Developers (TND) with financial support from the City of Malden and MassHousing, includes three two-bedroom units for people earning no more than 100% Area Median Income (AMI) and two one-bedroom units for people earning no more than 80% AMI. Malden residents will receive a preference in the lottery. Applications and more information, including income limits, is available online at https://www.theneighborhooddevelopers.org/ all-real-estate-projects/272cross. Applications are due by Tuesday, October 7, and the lottery will be held on Tuesday, October 21. “For too many families, the dream of homeownership is out of reach. I am thrilled that our commitment to affordable housing has paid off, and a property that was once vacant and an eyesore has been transformed into five affordable homes for firsttime homebuyers,” said Mayor Christenson. “I am grateful for The Neighborhood Developers’ continued partnership and shared commitment to this project. I encourage all interested income-eligible residents to apply for this housing opportunity.” The new affordable homes are located on a previously vacant property. The City of Malden identified the site as an opportunity to build new affordable housing with support from MassHousing’s Neighborhood Hub initiative. The location provides excellent accessibility and convenience; it is situated near public transit, schools, shops and other neighborhood amenities that will serve future residents well. With significant local funding from the City of Malden’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund and Housing ARPA subcommittee, this project offers income-eligible, first-time homebuyers an excellent opportunity for affordable homeownership. “The construction of 272-274 Cross Street is a welcome addition to Ward 7 that will bring needed affordable homeownJ& • Reliable Mowing Service • Spring & Fall Cleanups • Mulch & Edging • Sod or Seed Lawns • Shrub Planting & Trimming • Water & Sewer Repairs Joe Pierotti, Jr. ership opportunities to our residents,” said Ward 7 Councillor Chris Simonelli. “The opening of the lottery process promises to provide first-time homebuyers and their families an exciting opportunity to own and further deepen their roots within Malden.” “We’re proud to partner with MassHousing and the City of Malden to bring affordable homeownership to 272 Cross Street,” said TND Executive Director Rafael Mares. “This project shows what’s possible when we work together to turn a long-vacant property into something that strengthens the community. That means the private insurance companies that offer these plans can deny you coverage or charge you a lot more for preexisting conditions. This is known as the Medicare Advantage trap. Here’s what you should know. Understanding MA Plans Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Medicare Part C) are government approved health plans sold by private insurance companies that you can choose in place of original Medicare. The vast majority of Advantage plans are managed-care policies such as HMOs or PPOs that require you to get your care within a network of doctors. If you join an Advantage plan, the plan will provide all your Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) coverage like original Medicare does. But many Advantage plans also offer extra health perks like dental, hearing and vision coverage along with gym/ fitness memberships, and most plans include prescription drug coverage too. Medicare Advantage plans are also cheaper than if you got original Medicare, plus a separate Part D drug plan and a Medigap policy. This can be very attractive to new enrollees who are relatively healthy and don’t require much medical care. But the benefits and networks of Advantage plans can change from year to year. And if you get care outside the networks, you’ll usually pay more – sometimes a lot more. Advantage plans are also criticized for pre-authorization requirements which can delay or deny patient access to medical care. The rap on Medicare Advantage has always been that they’re great when you’re healthy and don’t require much health care, but depending on the plan, may not be so great if you get sick. With original Medicare, benefits remain the same and you can use any provider that accepts Medicare (most doctor’s do). But original Medicare has coverage gaps (deductibles, coinsurance and copayments) that can be very expensive, which is why you’ll need a supplemental (Medigap) plan offered by a private insurer. If you opt for original Medicare when you’re first eligible, insurers are required to issue you a Medigap policy and can’t charge you more based on your health status. In most states, Medigap plans are automatically available only in the first six months after an enrollee becomes eligible for Medicare. But if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan when you’re first eligible, you’ll miss the Medigap enrollment window, which means an insurer can refuse to write you a Medigap policy or charge you a lot more for signing up later. And in case you’re wondering, you can’t buy a Medigap policy while you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan. There are, however, four states — Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and New York — that prohibit insurers from denying a Medigap policy to eligible applicants, including people with pre-existing conditions. For more information on how Medigap works visit Medicare. gov/health-drug-plans/medigap. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior. org.
