Page 4 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, January 16, 2026 MPL event offered insights and tips to use technology more intentionally T he Malden Public Library (MPL) recently partnered with Reconnect Malden to hold an event, Tech on Your Terms, featuring three local experts on digital wellness and critical thinking. The purpose of the event was to help people use technology more intentionally. The topic was timely and relevant, as reportedly, people check their cellphones about once every five minutes, and nearly 46% of Americans say they’re “addicted” to their devices. Nearly 70 people, including several City Councillors and the Malden Public Schools Superintendent, attended this panel discussion, where experts provided tips and practical tools to help attendees better navigate tech and avoid (or reduce) mindless scrolling. The event also featured a lively Q&A session with thought-provoking questions and conversation about the significant impact technology has on people’s lives. The free event was open to youth, parents, and all community members, and it concluded with light refreshments and the opportunity for attendees to mix and mingle with the experts. Malden parent Shaleen Title, a volunteer with Reconnect Malden, helped bring this event to the MPL after having conversations with other local parents about technology and kids. “We were exhausted with decisions about phones, social media, and AI; we were concerned about all of the software being used at school; and we felt like we were dealing with all of this alone,” she explained. She helped organize this event “to bring us together and empower us to deal with these topics together.” Some of the experts’ biggest Established 1978 Mid-grade Regular 2.64 3.24 3.35 $3.37 Full Service ULS $2.999 Order online at angelosoil.com Kerosene Now Available! takeaways included teaching children to use their devices (and social media) responsibly, setting limits around children’s use of cellphones and social media and encouraging children to spend time with friends — doing activities offline. The event’s three panelists included Dr. Susan Linn, a lecturer in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a ventriloquist who appeared on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Among other books, she is the author of “Who’s Raising the Kids? Big Tech, Big Business, and the Lives of Children.” Another panelist was Dr. Joan Donovan, a Malden-based professor and researcher who explores media manipulation and helps people detect, document and debunk media manipulation campaigns. Panelist Liza Hirsch, the Director of the Children’s Justice Unit at the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, works to advance justice and equity for Massachusetts children and youth through civil investigations, litigation, policy and community engagement. About the Malden Public Library MPL, which is located at 36 Salem St. in Malden, supports technology in various ways, including free Wi-Fi, tech help drop-in days, loaner laptops for use inside the library, a Library of Things with many tech items available, and circulating Wi-Fi hotspots. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, January 16, 2026 ~ Malden Musings ~ Page 5 Billy Settemio — The Straw That Stirred Edgeworth’s Drink By Peter Levine W illiam “Billy” Settemio departed this mortal coil on November 11th, but not before living and loving his way through 68 years of glorious friendships, nonstop kindness, steadfast loyalty and the kind of everyday magic that only a real son of Edgeworth could conjure. Without even trying! Where do I start? Not an easy task when talking about my childhood goombah who I — 56 years ago — affectionately nicknamed “Willie Whiff” for his proclivity striking out in LL for Bob Covelle Sr.’s Giants. His inability to hit a fastball endeared him to us, forever. He loved the nickname, wore it proudly, and we had many laughs about it over the decades while enjoying a cocktail or two. Born and bred in God’s Country — the Edgeworth section of Malden — Billy was a true son of Malden, cut from that unmistakable Maldonian cloth and proud to flash his Malden High Class of ’75 bonafides wherever life took him. From the bustling chaos of the Stadium Café to the many miles logged through greater Boston for Cubby Oil, Billy stitched together a life overflowing with hard work, loyalty and the kind of laughter that could fill a room before he even filled it. That ain’t no lie. For more than 20 years, his presence overwhelmed the Stadium Café, transforming it into a legendary Edgeworth landmark where everyone knew your name, your backstory, and this being Billy, your drink of choice (long before you reached the bar). When he eventually traded the Stadium hustle for the Cubby oil biz, he didn’t leave his trademark grit or generosity behind. Over the next four decades, he became the guy you called when the heat went out (me included). And Billy? He never said no. Not once. Midnight in January? He was there. Sunday dinner just getting on the table? Fuhgeddaboudit! He grabbed the keys and jetted. Showing up wasn’t just something Billy did, it was who he was deep inside him. Billy with some of his favorite people: wife Michelle, grandkids Nolan & Kennedy. To many, he was “Uncle Billy”: the sparkplug in any gathering, the calm voice in a storm, the guy who could meet you once and greet you forever after like an old friend. In recent years, he and his beloved wife Michele built a sunny second life in Naples, Florida, where Billy did exactly what Billy always did: turned neighbors into friends and friends into family. But in his innermost soul, Billy was the ultimate family man. His universe spun around Michele, his children and especially his grandchildren: the little lights that brightened every corner of his world. And while half of Malden affectionately called him “Uncle Billy,” the title that sat closest to his heart was “Papa.” From my place in the universe, I could plainly see how much he so loved each and every one of those little ones who called him “Papa.” You could see it in his proud eyes each and every time he spoke of them. Billy Settemio lived the way every Maldonian/Edgeworthian hopes to be remembered: with loyalty that never, ever slowed down, (real) laughter that rolled through every room (I was very lucky to be part of quite a bit of that) and a love so generous it left people better just for having known him. Just for the record, this ain’t no fake news. It is said in Malden Musings... • I was in Marblehead recently for a remembrance celebrating my cousin Suzy’s life, and I’ve got to say, Marblehead absolutely blew me away. Stunning waterfront views; a quaint, postcard-perfect downtown; historic, ancient cemeteries that whisper stories from Marblehead’s glorious past; and plenty of cozy little hideaways if you’re in the mood for an adult beverage or two. It also happens to be home to MHS Alumni Hall of Famer Mike Goldman, who’s been residing in Marblehead for many moons now, and it’s easy to see why. The place has charm up the ying yang! Mike, Marblehead ain’t no Malden…but it is wicked awesome nonetheless! • A small Michael Goldman refresher for those with short memories...Michael (MHS 1967) is a Democratic political strategist and advisor (think Boston’s James Carville but on steroids), college professor, columnist, political communication consultant, media guru, radio & television analyst, president of “Goldman Associates,” a Malden High School Alumni Hall of Famer, a former alumni of Suffolk Square and (most of all) a VERY proud Maldonian. Mike’s been instrumental in the political careers of a man you may have heard of — the late Teddy Kennedy, as well as Mike Dukakis and former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. G Man has also served in the “kitchen cabinet” of former Governor Deval Patrick. Yeah, impressive! He did field work in New Jersey in 1968 for Robert Kennedy, was the Senior Advisor for (former NY Knick) Bill Bradley during his run for the presidency and (don’t hold this against him) he was also the Senior Advisor for John Edwards (LOL). Malden is very proud of you, Mike! • Malden Musings Redux: I sent this little ditty into The Boston Globe Magazine’s “50 Words” some time back and it was soundly rejected. Oh well. Good thing I have my own column! “Peter enjoys watching Combat! reruns (especially Season 5 in color), loves Bobby C’s Ristorante in Melrose aka Malden North, and has been known to enjoy a Ballantine Ale or two while relaxing on his recliner.” Without further ado...for your reading enjoyment (?) — 50 Words: 1963 Galleria Umberto...” • “1963. The Celtics struggled offensively throughout, with no player scoring more than seven points. The Kings, led by A. Greene with 11 points, overcame a difficult night at the free-throw line (4-for-14 as a team) and surged late. A decisive 17-point fourth quarter sealed the victory. Game 2 – Lakers 46, Pistons 34 The Lakers delivered a balanced offensive effort, with an impressive nine of 12 players recording points. J. Dinh led the way with 14 points, while J. Ramirez-Pool added 11 in the win. The Pistons, meanwhile, continued to struggle offensively. After falling behind 40–16 at halftime, no Pistons player was able to reach the eight-point mark. Sunday, January 11, 2026 @ Ferryway School Game 1 – Lakers 49, Bullets 42 The Purple and Gold completed a strong weekend with their second win. J. Dinh once again led the Lakers with 10 points in the league’s oldest rivalry, known as “Day 1 vs. Day 2.” The Bullets held a one-point lead at halftime, but the steady Lakers maintained a consistent pace, scoring 15 points in each quarter. D. Milonopoulos paced the Bullets with three three-pointers and a game-high 17 points, while the next closest teammate finished with seven. Game 2 – Sixers 39, Kings 29 What happened to the Kings? D. Bunch did his part, knocking down three three-pointers and scoring a weekend-high 21 points. Despite outscoring the Sixers 26–14 in the second half— 14 of those points coming from Bunch—the Kings managed only two additional scorers, leading to a tough loss. The defending champion Sixers built a 25– 13 halftime lead, placed six players in the scorebook by game’s end, and cruised to the win. Their double-digit duo was D. Da Cruz (12 points) and D. According to Mayor Gary Christenson, Malden is facing a financial shortfall severe enough to justify raising property taxes. Before taxpayers are asked to pay more, we believe the City has a fundamental obligation to demonstrate that it has fully and responsibly managed the dollars it already collects. Budget shortfalls do not appear overnight. They are the result of long-term decisions—some of which involve avoidable costs, delayed reforms, and missed opportunities to control spending. One clear example is the City’s employee health insurance expenditures. For years, Malden had the option to transition to more cost-effective health plans, as many surrounding municipalities did. Those changes were not made, and taxpayers are now being asked to absorb the consequences of those decisions. We also believe it is reasonable—and necessary—to scrutinize spending across all departments, including the school system and municipal administration. Residents deserve transparent answers to basic questions: • Where has spending increased most rapidly? • Which programs lack measurable outcomes or oversight? • What contracts, benefits, or administrative costs could be renegotiated or restructured? To date, taxpayers have not been presented with a comprehensive, independent analysis that identifies wasteful spending, inefficiencies, or structural cost drivers. Instead, we are being told that higher taxes are unavoidable. We strongly disagree with that approach. Before placing a Proposition 2½ override before voters, the City should commission a high-level, third-party financial audit conducted by an independent accounting firm with no political or financial ties to Malden. Such a review should focus on identifying cost-saving opportunities, longterm liabilities, and spending reforms that could reduce or eliminate the need for a tax increase. This is not about opposing essential services or public education. It is about respecting taxpayers—many of whom are already struggling with rising housing costs, inflation, healthcare expenses, and utility bills. LETTER | SEE PAGE 9

Page 10 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, January 16, 2026 Savvy Senior by Jim Miller Chair Yoga: Safe, Simple, and Beneficial for Older Adults Dear Savvy Senior, I’ve been hearing a lot about chair yoga lately. My New Year’s resolution is to improve my health and get moving again, but I have trouble getting down on the floor. What can you tell me about this type of yoga? Arthritic Abby Dear Abby, If you’re looking for a safe way to get active again but find traditional exercise routines difficult, chair yoga may be the perfect fit. Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that’s done either sitting on a chair or using the chair for support while standing. It adapts traditional yoga poses so they’re accessible to people who may have limited mobility, balance issues, or difficulty getting down on the floor. This practice helps improve flexibility, strength, and balance, boosts circulation and mobility, and promotes relaxation while reducing stress. This makes it an effective and safe way to stay active and support overall well-being at any age. A typical chair yoga session begins with simple seated postures, such as gentle twists, stretches for the arms and legs, or movements that open the hips and shoulders. These exercises loosen stiff joints, improve posture, and increase flexibility in areas of the body that often become tight with age. It can also include standing poses like modified lunges or gentle balance work, with the chair always nearby for stability. Breathing exercises are often incorporated throughout the practice, encouraging participants to slow down, deepen their breath, and cultivate a sense of calm. Sessions usually end with a short period of guided relaxation or meditation, leaving participants refreshed and grounded. How to Get Started To get started, you just need a sturdy chair without wheels and preferably without arms, and some comfortable clothes. The goal with chair yoga is to stretch, not cause pain. So go only as far as feels comfortable and don’t push beyond your limits. If possible, consider joining a local chair yoga class. Many local senior centers, YMCAs, and community recreation centers offer chair yoga as part of their wellness or fitness programs. Some yoga studios and gyms may offer gentle yoga or chair yoga too. And if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may be able to access classes for free through SilverSneakers.com. If attending an in-person class isn’t an option, you can also practice chair yoga at home. There are chair yoga apps and many videos you can access on YouTube to guide you through a routine. Chair Exercise Options As an alternative to chair yoga, there are chair exercises you can add to your routine that can help improve strength and balance, reduce joint pain and prevent falls. To execute some of these exercises, you’ll need some resistance equipment like light dumbbells, water bottles, soup cans or resistance bands. • Sit-to-stand: For this exercise, sit at the edge of the chair, feet hip-width apart. Stand up without using your hands, then slowly sit back down. Use hands lightly on the chair or use a walker or cane if needed for support. • Seated marches: Sit tall and alternate lifting one knee at a time toward your chest. • Seated bicep curls: With elbows tucked in, curl weights towards shoulders, then lower with control. • Seated overhead press: Press weights overhead from shoulder height, then slowly lower. • Seated leg extensions: Extend one leg straight out and hold for 2-3 seconds, then lower and repeat. • Heel raises: Lift heels off the floor, pause, and lower back down. For noticeable benefits, these exercises should be performed at least three days a week, doing three sets of 8 to12 repetitions. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. I remember the beautiful Christmas tree standing in the middle of the square and how festive it was. I thought Santa delivered it himself! Speaking of Santa, the very best memory for me (as well as many Maldonians, I’m sure), is visiting Santa at Pine Banks. How magical it was! Santa took time out of his busy schedule to visit Malden just to hear my wishes. I asked Santa where Rudolph was, and he said he was out back in Pine Banks having a snack. I thought that was the greatest thing ever — that Rudolph liked Pine Banks as much as I did. Maybe this year Rudolph can visit the fabulous dog park!” Priceless, Patti! • I’ve always liked June Lockhart, who passed away recently at the wonderful old age of 100! If she appeared in nothing else but “Lassie” she would have been legendary, but her subsequent role in Jamie Forbes and my favorite TV show, “Lost in Space,” endeared her to us forever! Then I read her obituary in The Wall Street Journal (thank you, Anthony Spadafora!): “Offscreen, Lockhart insisted she was nothing like the women she portrayed. ‘I loved rock ‘n’ roll and going to the concerts,’ she recalled in a 1994 interview.” Out of sight, man! Nicky turned 100 years young on that Saturday afternoon with a room full of friends and family, including a couple of “wise guys” from the HBO “Sopranos” TV show — Frank Santorelli aka “Georgie” and John Fiore aka “Gigi Cestone.” Also in attendance were a couple of local celebrities: Public Works Commission member Dickie “Mr. Wonderful” Barricelli and Public Facility (MVP for 2025?) Dave “Elbows High” Angelo. • Speaking of “The Cat”...you had to be there, and I guess you have to know Harvey “Nat the Cat” Nadler, but here goes anyway...witnessing Julie Gavin do THE best Harvey Nadler imitation was worth the price of admission alone! Order tickets early and often. • Speaking of Harvey Nadler and on a serious tip...Please send warm thoughts, prayers and every positive vibe you’ve got his way as he works through recovery from a devastating fall. I’ll start; Harvey, you are truly loved, my friend. Heal up and come back strong so we can keep smiling, laughing and soaking up all the good moments this life still has waiting for you. As Peter Falk’s iconic TV character Columbo would say, “Just one more thing, sir” — the title of this article came courtesy of Officer Sal Gennetti, a lifelong friend of “Uncle Billy,” who quietly tossed that line my way at Forestdale Cemetery, just after the burial. If you knew Billy even a little, you know it fits him perfectly. Sal, his late father Butch and really every Gennetti you could name-check shared a lifetime of laughs, milestones and simple Edgeworth moments with Billy and his family. Edgeworth took a heavy hit this past year, losing both Butchie and Billy — two pillars whose absence is felt every time someone tells an old story or pauses before a familiar name. In tight-knit neighborhoods, that’s what happens. Billy had a rare gift: He knew everyone, and not surprisingly, everyone knew Billy. I saw it firsthand.
