Nick Young’s no-hitter propels the Everett Williamsport stars past Malden to begin district tournament Team now gets ready for Dorchester tonight after dropping close contest to Charlestown By Joe McConnell T he Everett Little League Williamsport all-star team started off the District 12 tournament last Thursday night, June 29, in a familiar place at Sacramone Park, and they took advantage of the home field advantage by dominating neighboring Malden to the tune of 7-0. Nick Young set the tone for his teammates with a complete game no-hitter. Young whiffed 12, while also going a perfect two-fortwo at the plate with a single and a double. Young’s batterymate Nick Savi was also credited with a single and a double. First baseman Caden Foley made four putouts in the game to help preserve Young’s no-hitter. The Everett stars went back to work two days later on Saturday, July 1, against Charlestown in Charlestown, where they lost a close game, 5-3. Luke Wood pitched the first four innings for Everett, giving up just two runs, while fanning eight. Foley pitched the fifth inning for Everett and proceeded to retire his Charlestown counterparts in order. But he yielded some hits in the sixth, and the Townies ended up scoring three runs to break a 2-2 stalemate. “Our bats simply went cold in this game, getting just three hits over six innings,” said manager Joe Young. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, the Everett boys started their comeback bid on a leadoff single by Wood, who ended up on third as a result of a two-base error. Troy Coke then knocked him in with a single. Mateus Bueno also got a hit in the fifth and eventually scored the tying run. Everett tried to stage one more comeback in its last at bat. Colin Rogers led off with a walk. He then stole second before scoring on a base hit by Luis Quintanilla to trim the deficit to two. They later had runners at the corners with two outs, but Wood had his hard-hit groundball snared by the Charlestown pitcher on a great play to end the threat. They came up just short of securing their second straight triumph. But Everett has a chance to redeem themselves against Dorchester in Dorchester tonight (July 7), starting at 7 p.m.
