Federally insured by NCUA On June 25 at the Parlin Library, residents as well as school and city officials gathered for the first superintendent search public forum. “It’s a vastly different community than it was 20 years ago,” said one resident. Al Lattanzi asked if Interim Superintendent of Schools Janice Gauthier had applied for the district’s top position. Abruzzese said that although there are 14 individuals in the district who are superintendent-certified, he does not believe the new leader will come from Everett. “There’s a lot of people who want someone who doesn’t even know where Everett is,” he said. Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) Field Director Kathleen Kelly briefly interjected, asking that comments from School Committee members be limited so as not to violate the Open Meeting Law. State Sen. Sal DiDomenico said he wants a superintendent who plans to stay in the district. “I don’t want somethere’s no guarantee,” he said. It was also said that turnover has become problematic with teachers leaving to escape a “culture of fear.” One resident said the allegations of sexual harassment against former Superintendent Frederick Foresteire have created a “damaged culture.” “There’s a lot of people who knew what was going on and did nothing about it,” he said. MASC Executive Director Glenn Koocher asked by a show of hands, if the new superintendent should also be a former teacher. Everyone raised their hand, which surprised Koocher. “I very rarely see unanimity in the room,” he said. Koocher also reminded everyone that after the new superintendent is hired, that person will be under the direct supervision of the School Committee. “There is a system of accountability,” he said.
