New Books Cozy Quilts and Comforts Lynne Hagmeier has a new technique for layering fabrics. Her quilts are all very traditional and she would fit right in at Grandmother's Garden. I love her use of colour. She uses a lot of very dark T-dye fabrics as backgrounds. Any one of them could go onto my bed whenever she has finished with it. I particularly like her Checkerboard Garden where she has added appliqué to the piecing. 96 Pages. $47.40 Braided Bargello Quilts As the book says "Simple Process, Dynamic Designs". The quilts in this book are certainly dynamic. There are great instructions with photos. You must number all your fabrics and then follow the chart for each quilt to create a stunning effect. You are going to use at least 40 fat quarters in each quilt so this is also a stash buster. I would not recommend this book for a beginner, but it would be well worth spending the rest of the summer for an intermediate or advanced quilter. 79 Pages. $37.00 Great Granny Squared The inspiration for this book came from learning to crochet granny squares with her grandmother. Lori has turned the love of making granny squares into quilting. Like granny squares, where you use up leftover wool, with this book you can turn your fabric scraps into quilts as long as they are 2 ½" square. 37 Pages. $23.60 Patches of Blue This is one of my favourite books. I like all of Edyta Sitar's quilts and in this book she presents all her blue quilts. You can, of course, use pink, purple or red! There are 17 quilts to make — some with appliqué. Whoever photographs her quilts has done a great job as they are inspirational. 128 Pages. $50.10 Precut Primer If you are like a lot of quilters you will have a collection of precuts. These can be 5" squares, Jelly Rolls or Layer Cakes. The girls who wrote this book have 12 quilts designed with imagination for you to begin using these hard to resist precuts. It really is lovely being able to use a full collection from a designer and we always have full bolts for you to use as borders. 45 Pages. $25.20 Machine Quilting for Beginners There comes a time when your quilt top is finished and you are ready for the icing on the cake — quilting. If you make a lot of quilts, having them commercially quilted becomes quite expensive. Use this beginners book to learn how to quilt your own. You make lots of samples to perfect the technique and then you are off. 79 Pages. $26.20 15 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018
