Block of the Month Projects Cobblestone Way 51" x 63" Gayle found this beautiful quilt a lot of fun to create. There is so much variety, you will never get tired of repetition. Gayle and I found it in a quilt shop last year outside Houston and we purchased the patterns right there. Numbers are therefore limited to the patterns we have — until at least next October when we return to Houston and can pick up more. Enjoy the beautiful appliqué, whether by hand or machine. This Block of the Month project starts in February/ March 2018. Month One is $100.00 followed by six months at $38.00 per month. Optional Matching Thread Set: Six 200 m spools of Aurifil Cotton, $48.00. Register Now! Reaching Blue Sky 64" x 80" Here is another gorgeous quilt created by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts. You can do the appliqué by hand or be like Elvene and use your machine. Whichever method you choose, this is a show stopper quilt. The fabrics in this quilt are from Edyta’s Blue Sky range and numbers will be limited. So, if this is you don’t hesitate to register. This project will run over five months. Most of your fabric will be supplied with your first parcel. So, Month One is $100.00 followed by four months at $59.00 per month. Starts April/May 2018. Optional Matching Thread Sets: Four 200 m spools of Aurifil Cotton, $32.30, or Four 150 m spools of Polyester, $18.20. Register Now! Grandmother's Garden, January 2018 02 NEW NEW

You Lucky Dog 42" x 46" This is Bonnie Sullivan’s latest project and as dog lovers we think it is fun as well as quite beautiful as the dog gets involved in many pursuits. Bonnie must love animals as many of her quilts are all about birds, cats and dogs. Those coming to Bonnie's class at the Hamilton Airport Hotel in March will get a chance to see her original sample made from flannel. Gayle made our sample also from flannel, but if you would like to discuss with her making it all in wool, just phone. It will be more expensive! This project starts in February 2018. Month One is $75.00 followed by 10 months at $22.00 per month. Optional Matching Thread Set: Six 200 m spools of Aurifil Cotton, $48.00. Register Now! Hazel's Collectibles — Gold 62" x 62" For many years I have collected embroidery designs from old magazines — the kind that were included as transfers in your ladies magazines and they had to be ironed on. I could get these in antique shops and people sent them to me knowing I collected them when they cleaned out their mother’s sewing room. My son’s mother in law started working as a volunteer in a charity store and sent me heaps. We ran a Club where members received a design every month. These designs are from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I made heaps of cushions and three quilts. A blue one, a red one and this one in golds and creams. Finally, I ran out of transfers and designs but here is one of the quilts for you to make. This stitchery project will go over nine months at $25.80 per month. Starts in March/April 2018! Register Now! 03 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018 NEW NEW

By the end of the weekend you'll be well on your way to completing one block. Julia will give you a pattern to make a bag using your block as a decorative insert. You don’t need to stop there though. You can also make your own heirloom quilt. The workshop takes place over the weekend of the 7th & 8th April 2018 from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm each day. New Kitsets Just Bee Drawstring Bag 10" x 12" Gayle has been at it again with this fabulous drawstring bag. First do the stitchery and then create the lined bag. She has used a bee print for the lining and altogether it is a bag to be proud of. Keep your latest stitchery project intact with hoop, needles, needle threader and skein of DMC, ready to take away or pick up in the evening. Kit contains everything to make the bag. $52.00 My Little Home 15 ½" x 19 ½" Gayle made this Kathy Schmitz design in green and I haven’t quite finished mine in deep red — so you can pick what colour you want and we will match the thread with just the right colour fabric for the patchwork. You may want blue. It is a very nice project to work on and you can pretty much do a little square of the embroidery in an evening. Once the top is together, you can do as much stitchery on the fabrics as you wish. Gayle has framed hers in a wooden frame, which makes it look very special and the centre piece for any wall — gorgeous Gayle! $68.00 Tea Time Braid Runner 15" x 50" We love making these braid runners and we have them using all kinds of theme prints. This one is afternoon tea with teapots and cups. We try to do a little colourwash within each runner. They make a wonderful gift and, like us, you won’t make just one! You can finish this in a day. $56.50 Crystal Farm Braid Runner 15" x 57" We have all had a shot at making one of these runners with our own choice of fabric. This is Gayle's and it has her wonderful taste of the traditional. You can make this in a day and I have said many times — you will make more than one! $56.50 05 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018

Annabelle's Garden 17" x 17" Beautiful! Gayle picked up this pattern in Houston and made it for herself. We can now offer it as a very nice little project. It is a mixture of wool appliqué, embroidery and piecing. This designer often includes small buttons with her patterns but she hasn’t with this one. We are, however, looking at importing some and they will be optional. You could sew tiny buttons into the middle of every little flower. This piece really needs to be framed and Gayle has been framing some of her small pieces in wooden frames lately and they look a million dollars. $68.00 Meadowbrook Acres 24" x 30" This is one of Gayle's fabulous smaller projects using appliqué but the border does give you some piecing work and the blocks are machined together. Every block is just 6" and you could finish a block in a couple of days. Who needs paintings when your home can be decorated by pieces like this. Included in the kitset will be a Layer Cake of Jo Morton's Timeless range, the background fabric and the commercial pattern. You'll be able to complete the top, plus binding. If you prefer to use a different Layer Cake for this project, let us know and we'll change the kitset for you. $136.00 Wool Coneflower Welcome 18" x 21" There is some wool appliqué in this piece and also some patchwork with ordinary cotton. This is perhaps a good start for experimenting with wool — which by the way, is taking the quilting world by storm. $73.00 Rose Garden Twist 58" x 70" This is the most beautiful quilt design and one from many years ago — maybe 25. It is so exciting to work on but you have to be careful not to sew in a piece the wrong way or you will spoil the design of the twist. You can expect us to give you more of this quilt design as the perfect fabrics appear on the market. Obviously a border print is essential. I'm very excited to be rediscovering this wonderful design! The sewing is not difficult, you just have to keep focused and a design wall does help. $280.00 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018 06

Farm Friends 21" x 37" Elvene made our shop sample of this wall hanging. The colours are bright and happy — perfect for a nursery. She has used machine appliqué and fusible web so it all went together quite quickly. $79.80 Cat's Meow 16" x 16" This is another of Elvene’s laser cut kits but one you can have hanging all year — two satisfied cats on a nice colourful background. $45.90 Gary the Gull 8 ½" x 10" A little bit of fun here and made by Lynda who dismantled a shell creation so that Gary could have a nice nest. John added a backdrop of sea so Gary looks almost real! This is certainly a conversation piece for your home or bach. $43.00 This & That Alphabet Quilt 54" x 61" As long as you know your alphabet, you will get these pre-printed squares in the correct place! We had fun telling Gayle she has a couple in the wrong place — even she looked twice! This is an easy quilt which would be lovely on a child’s bed. The alphabet squares are alternated with pretty flower prints from the same collection. $128.00 07 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018

Waratah and Tropical Reef 30" x 40" each Colleen had a great creative time with these two projects. These are almost ‘paint by number’ projects with fabric. You get a background fabric with the shapes stencilled on and you then fill them in with the fabric provided to make these stunning wall quilts. These have come out of Australia and use vividly coloured batik. Something different. Waratah kit, $110.00 Tropical Reef kit, $124.00 Mikado Tote Bag 17 ½" x 15 ½" x 2 ½" deep Julia has chosen a very smart linen from Japan for this tote. It is a rich burgundy and this colour seems only to be created in Japan. It is very subtle but modern. Some charms will be included in this kitset. $61.75 53" x 75" Would you believe this quilt is made with just two fabrics. It uses a striped batik and again it is a great idea from Australia. Perhaps you need a quick colourful quilt for a young person. You may have found it! $138.00 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018 08

Interstellar 69" x 69" Something more of a challenge from Jinny Beyer but we know many of you are more advanced quilters looking for a challenge. Elvene made this stunning quilt and will be on the end of the phone to offer any advice. It really is something spectacular and well able to be hung in your next exhibition. $268.20 09 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018

Christmas Woolens 4" x 4 ½" each Here is a charming collection of warm woolen mittens & stockings to celebrate the Christmas season. Easily constructed & full of charm, these ornaments are suitable for trimming the tree or decorating packages. Tiny surprises can be tucked inside each one. Kit includes felt to complete six ornaments, complete patterns and illustrated instructions, embroidery floss. $35.00 Ebony & Ivory Crazy Patch Bag 13" wide x 11" high x 2" deep Julia is almost world famous with her gorgeous Crazy Patch creations and we are fortunate to have her teach here for us. She is going from strength to strength with her creations and her classes are always full. Here is one of her latest smart bags — shoulder and across body. $79.00 Christmas Pillar Table Runner 17" x 37" I made this runner just before Christmas and I thought the Poinsettia fabric created a wreath around a pillar. It is easy to make with just triangles and three fabrics for a quick gift or a runner for your own coffee table at Christmas. $45.00 Christmas Banner 13" x 44" We had trouble keeping up with the orders for this new design. We still have many to supply and hope they will arrive this month — too late for this Christmas but with a bit over 300 days, Christmas will come around again! This would make a fabulous gift for friends and family and a must for your own home. It looks like a stained glass window. It is all laser precut. You carefully peel off the backing paper and iron it to the lovely background Elvene has chosen for her sample. You can stitch or not stitch. $69.50 Elf Christmas Stockings 10" x 16" Julia is giving you plenty of time with over 300 days to create her lovely Crazy Patch stockings. These are certainly heirlooms to be treasured for many Christmases. $54.50 (Red OR Silver) O Holy Night 12" x 12" Another lovely seasonal hanging created the same way as the Christmas Banner. Smaller and perhaps a good way to work towards the creator’s more intricate designs. $44.50 Machine Quilting Service We offer a machine quilting service but only for all over designs — not for custom quilting. Our prices are very reasonable and we have a quick turnaround. Phone us for a quote. Grandmother's Garden, January 2018 10

Clubs Our clubs deliver a little inspiration each month in the form of fabrics, stitcheries, kitsets, books and threads. Here is a little about some of our clubs, but you can read more on our website. Prices quoted do not include freight or postage. The Fifth Saturday Club 2018 The months of March, June, September and December each have five Saturdays this year. As a club member, you’ll need to obtain the exclusive hand made lined and zippered bag for $15.00. You bring your bag to the shop on the Fifth Saturday and you can fill it as full as you can with any full priced items in the shop — as long as the zipper will close without bursting! You will receive 20% off the entire contents. The first Saturday is at the end of March. You’ll receive your bag in advance with a reminder of the dates. As a club member, you’ll also be entitled to complimentary morning teas on each of the Fifth Saturdays. Not many rules but... You must bring your exclusive bag so keep it in the glove box of your car. The bag lasts for one year only and next year there will be a different exclusive bag. You can give your bag on loan to a friend if you are not going to be around for one of the Saturdays. Funky Friends We have discovered the patterns for 12 really fun soft toys. Many of them patchwork so here is a way for you to use up some of the little bits you have lying around. Most of the toys are 8" to 12" and are so cute and very collectible. The full-size pattern comes with a colour photo, list of requirements, layout diagram and instructions. The cost for each pattern is $25.00 and you'll receive one per month. The Bag Ladies Club There are 12 ladies in total but as it is a Club you can cancel anytime by giving one month's notice. The cost will be $25.00 per month. You'll receive a pre-coloured, pre-printed panel and it looks like you will only need small amounts of different DMC threads. You can make a quilt or you can make the individual blocks into bags, pillows etc. Whatever you decide you will have fun embroidering these! Threads are not included but we can send you a selection of 12 DMC threads if you wish. This optional DMC starter thread set is $21.60. 13 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018 Cottage Garden Thread Club This thread is for hand embroidery. It is hand dyed and variegated — just lovely to use and the effect is beautiful! It is cut into lengths so you don't have to. There are some fabulous colour combinations and I think that most Australian women who design embroidery use it. Receive three 10 m skeins of Stranded Cotton at $9.20 each per month.

Mary Flanagan Wool Bundles We are very excited about this new club as we see the popularity of wool appliqué growing. I have noticed this happening in America over the years and now there are so many wonderful books on the subject. Wool is often difficult to find, according to many of our customers. So, this club is going to be wonderful for wool devotees. There are 52 different colours in total with different textures throughout each colourway. These textures coordinate beautifully when mixing them in appliqué and quilting projects. Each month you'll receive a bundle of five different textured wool pieces of one colourway for $43.50 per month. Each piece measures approx. 8" x 6 ½". These wools have all been hand-dyed in the same dye bath for consistency in colour. Aurifil Cotton Thread Club This thread is just wonderful to use and it has been endorsed by so many famous quilters. It has a nice sheen but is 100% cotton. My machine sews like a dream when I use it. It is ideal for hand or machine appliqué, hand or machine piecing, machine embroidery and machine quilting — covering almost every aspect of patchwork and quilting. Each month you'll receive three 200 m spools of Aurifil Cotton at $8.50 per spool. Grunge Club Grunge is Moda’s most popular basic — and no wonder! There are over 140 colours in the range. They are stunning with just that hint of texture. Not only that, but some colours have 8 to 10 shades so the mind boggles at some of the results you will achieve with subtle shading! Join this club if you would like to collect them. You'll receive six fat quarters every month for $7.50 per fat quarter. Christmas Keepsake Ornaments Each of these festive designs is pre-printed and pre-coloured ready for you to apply the stitching (threads and embellishments not included). We have chosen 12 designs and you will receive one per month. The cost will be $15.00 per month. You can use them as Christmas decorations, make them into a beautiful Christmas table runner or you could make a lovely Christmas bunting. Start now and you will have most finished for Christmas. When someone working in the shop wants to make all of these, then I know it will be a winning Club. Optional: Extra-fine stabilizer for your stitchery background, $3.00/pack (enough for all 12 ornaments). We really like the idea of backing these with cream wool and blanketstitch around the edges. We can send you a pack of cream wool for $21.00 (again, enough for all 12 ornaments). Grandmother's Garden, January 2018 14

New Books Cozy Quilts and Comforts Lynne Hagmeier has a new technique for layering fabrics. Her quilts are all very traditional and she would fit right in at Grandmother's Garden. I love her use of colour. She uses a lot of very dark T-dye fabrics as backgrounds. Any one of them could go onto my bed whenever she has finished with it. I particularly like her Checkerboard Garden where she has added appliqué to the piecing. 96 Pages. $47.40 Braided Bargello Quilts As the book says "Simple Process, Dynamic Designs". The quilts in this book are certainly dynamic. There are great instructions with photos. You must number all your fabrics and then follow the chart for each quilt to create a stunning effect. You are going to use at least 40 fat quarters in each quilt so this is also a stash buster. I would not recommend this book for a beginner, but it would be well worth spending the rest of the summer for an intermediate or advanced quilter. 79 Pages. $37.00 Great Granny Squared The inspiration for this book came from learning to crochet granny squares with her grandmother. Lori has turned the love of making granny squares into quilting. Like granny squares, where you use up leftover wool, with this book you can turn your fabric scraps into quilts as long as they are 2 ½" square. 37 Pages. $23.60 Patches of Blue This is one of my favourite books. I like all of Edyta Sitar's quilts and in this book she presents all her blue quilts. You can, of course, use pink, purple or red! There are 17 quilts to make — some with appliqué. Whoever photographs her quilts has done a great job as they are inspirational. 128 Pages. $50.10 Precut Primer If you are like a lot of quilters you will have a collection of precuts. These can be 5" squares, Jelly Rolls or Layer Cakes. The girls who wrote this book have 12 quilts designed with imagination for you to begin using these hard to resist precuts. It really is lovely being able to use a full collection from a designer and we always have full bolts for you to use as borders. 45 Pages. $25.20 Machine Quilting for Beginners There comes a time when your quilt top is finished and you are ready for the icing on the cake — quilting. If you make a lot of quilts, having them commercially quilted becomes quite expensive. Use this beginners book to learn how to quilt your own. You make lots of samples to perfect the technique and then you are off. 79 Pages. $26.20 15 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018

One-Block Wonders of the World Turn one fabric quilts into a kaleidoscope quilt. Cut and piece identical triangles which then turn into hexagons and when they are all joined together the results are spectacular. There is a great gallery of 40 quilts made by quilters in seven countries just for inspiration but you will also see step by step instructions on making your own one fabric wonder. 79 Pages. $41.70 Magic Add-A-Strip Take any basic block, slice it and add a strip for some dazzling secondary designs. You will find 10 bold patterns with 20 variations in this book. This is a new technique you will not have tried before. I was pretty surprised at some of the exciting patterns that could be achieved by just adding a strip! 63 Pages. $38.40 Quilt As-You-Go Made Vintage Skip the longarmer and finish quilts on your home machine! Best-selling author Jera Brandvig shares a romantic take on her easy quilting designs. Sew nine quilt-as-you-go projects, including an elegant sampler with 51 interchangeable blocks. Choose one of three Quilt As You Go finishing methods (or stick with traditional quilting), including a new reversible-quilt method that renders a secondary patchwork design on your quilt back! No matter how busy your schedule, these timeless blocks create endless possibilities. 143 Pages. $39.00 Free-Motion Meandering This book is so easy to read. It is written in a way that is very user friendly for beginners, who may be a little nervous. Have more fun with your machine this year and learn to quilt. You will at the very least save money. 79 Pages. $37.00 Dresden Quilt Workshop Use small Dresden Plates in conjunction with accurate piecing to create a whole new look. Great techniques in this book and the star table runner is a must for me to make this year. The centre of a star is a square with a small Dresden Plate. 88 Pages. $42.10 Use with Susan Marth’s Dresden Plate Templates (see the notions section of this newsletter). If you have the book, you won't need to purchase it again when we offer a quilt as a row of the month. 112 Pages. $46.30 Crazy Kind of Wonderful Here is more beautiful Folk Art wool appliqué. We saw a lot of tray cloths using wool appliqué in Houston in October and there is a lovely design in this book to do just that. There are wall hangings, pin cushions, needle cases and other small projects including mixes of ordinary cotton fabrics, wool and flannel. 35 Pages. $49.50 Simple Harvest There is not a lot more to say about Kim Diehl other than she is one of our favourite designers. There are some gorgeous projects in this book using the wonderful colours of Autumn. There is piecing and appliqué, bed runners, quilts, pillows and some nice little projects for a wet weekend of sewing. 128 Pages. $49.90 Sweet & Simple Wool Appliqué The great thing about Folk Art is that you don’t need to be 100% accurate. In fact the quirkier the better! We are all getting into wool appliqué and there are some great little projects in this book to ease you gently into working with wool. Try some pincushions, a decorated wheat sack, a needle and thread holder or one of the lovely wall quilts. Then come to Bonnie Sullivan’s workshop in March. She did not write this book but many designers did contribute, showing just how popular wool appliqué is becoming. 71 Pages. $37.90 Fabulous Facades Some of you will have experienced a workshop with Gloria Loughman first hand. Others will have seen some of her fabulous landscape quilts. Here is her latest book which will show you how to achieve buildings, boats, cars, doorways and more with the use of fused fabric to create your favourite place. There are as many as three or four colour photographs on some pages. 127 Pages. $51.40 17 Grandmother's Garden, January 2018

Creative Stitching Second Edition Sue Spargo is another designer who works with wool. We are looking forward this year to buying some brighter wool. We are loving the earthy tones of the hand dyed wool we already sell but we will be looking at the brighter side of the colour wheel. Those of you familiar with Sue Spargo’s work will know that she layers her work with much embroidery and bead work and in this updated version of her previous book you will find hundreds of her stitches over many chapters and headings. It has a convenient spiral lie flat binding which makes it easy to follow her step by step diagrams. 214 Pages. $58.00 Stitches from the Harvest Fifteen all-new embroideries await you in Kathy Schmitz’ new book. Kathy is Bonnie Sullivan’s sister and their other sister makes beautiful jewellery. What a talented family. There are some beautiful embroidery projects in this new book. There is a little bit of wool but I am particularly interested in a beautiful embroidered pillow! There are lots of small projects which are do-able and not too overwhelming. 80 Pages. $42.20 Quilts & Projects from my Favorite Fabrics Yoko Saito is becoming so famous and no wonder. Her work is exquisite and she has lots of embroidery and tiny appliqué embellished with embroidery. She has so much detail in her projects, it is a joy to look through her books.
