HE@CRC SPORT (COACHING & SPORTS DEVELOPMENT) Steph Tirrell, 22, former HND Sport (Coaching & Sports Development) student, now studying for BSc (Hons) Applied Sport Science at Loughborough University; EuroHockey gold medallist The friendly and personal approach at CRC helped set me on the right path to obtain a full BSc degree from an internationally recognised sporting institute, and for that I am truly thankful. I’m applying for an MSc course, for jobs at Loughborough Sport and for Graduate Sports Assistant roles in schools. I’d also like to travel abroad to play or coach hockey or cricket in America or Australia. “ The HNC and HND course equipped me with the skills necessary to progress and obtain a BSc (Hons) degree whilst still performing my sport to the highest level possible. I was in the British Colleges National Hockey Squad when I was at CRC and I’m currently a Loughborough cricketer, representing the MCCU and 1st teams, as well as being Club Chair.” Why did you choose to study HE Sport at CRC? I decided initially university wasn’t for me, and therefore opted to stay on at CRC and continue with the Level 4/5 courses after my Level 3. ” What did you like about studying at CRC? I liked the smaller class sizes - they made it easier to approach the lecturers compared to large university lecture theatres. Going on to university was seamless thanks to excellent tutoring whilst on the Level 4/5 courses. I also went on a volunteering trip to Morocco. I am currently fundraising for Meningitis Research Foundation by attempting to scale Mount Kilimanjaro. What was the biggest difference between studying at Level 3 and Levels 4 & 5? The need to be really organised, having to reference everything you did and improve writing style to suit the level of learning.
