HE@CRC SPORT (COACHING & SPORTS DEVELOPMENT) Cassie Wicks, 22, former HND Sport (Coaching & Sports Development) student, now studying Sports Coaching Performance at the University of Northampton I am doing a top-up degree at Moulton College, through the University of Northampton. The course was full-on from the start, especially the dissertation, but the research project I did during my HND prepared me well. CRC has very good links with Moulton College so it made the transition easy. After graduating from Northampton I am planning to take a year out to get experience working in a school and then I’ll look into completing a PGCE because I’d like to become a PE teacher. “ Preparation and organisation were key on my HNC and HND courses at CRC, and led to great opportunities and the ability to progress and succeed. I also went on a volunteering trip to Morocco and did some fundraising. I’d advise anyone on the HNC course to think about volunteering and try to choose something that helps your planned career path.” Why did you choose to study HE Sport at CRC? I’d previously studied at the college so it was a place where I felt comfortable. It was in a good location for me to commute and the price in comparison to studying at university was a lot better. ” What did you like about studying at CRC? The teachers were very approachable and the college has very good facilities. The class sizes were good and I enjoyed the variety in assessment and the varied teaching methods. What was the biggest difference between studying at Level 3 and Levels 4 & 5? I found that learning became more of an independent process. The teachers didn’t spoon-feed you, assignments were a lot more challenging and we carried out more advanced lab tests. Group sizes were smaller which enabled more one-to-one time with the teachers.

I did a Level 6 top-up degree in Sports Coaching & Development at Moulton College through the University of Northampton. I love my job and I can’t wait to see how I progress in years to come within the industry. Even though I no longer compete I still train once a week to maintain my skill and fi tness levels.” Why did you choose to study HE Sport at CRC? I didn’t feel comfortable taking exams and I preferred the style of learning at CRC. It made things more realistic for me. I remember feeling very confused about what I would do after the Level 3 course but help guided me to where I am now. So don’t be afraid to ask for career advice or support. ” What did you like about studying at CRC? The teachers are really approachable at CRC, which made things easier for me as sometimes I fi nd it hard to say when I’m struggling with something. The course improved my confi dence a great deal - I never imagined I would have achieved what I have today. Going on to Mouton College was a very straightforward step thanks to the help I received from CRC. What was the biggest difference between studying at Level 3 and Levels 4 & 5? Learning to reference was defi nitely a big challenge for me. I also felt I had to change my style of reading and writing to a much higher standard.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing Level 3 Sport at CRC and gained a triple distinction, so I chose to do my HND there. It was a good foundation for the next step. Once I complete my degree, I would like to go into secondary school Physical Education teaching. I’m planning to undergo SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) in order to gain appropriate qualifi cations and vital experience that will help me stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs. “ The experience of HE at Cambridge Regional College was tremendous. It differs from the Level 3 massively. It’s more independent and you feel yourself grow as an individual. I would certainly have regretted not taking the opportunity to better myself and my future prospects.” Why did you choose to study HE Sport at CRC? I did a Level 3 in Sport at CRC which I thoroughly enjoyed, so I knew the location, the tutors and it meant I wouldn’t have to leave home. Level 3 is the time you begin to plan the route you want to go down and which career you want to follow in sport. ” What did you like about studying at CRC? Small groups helped aid progression and I liked the familiarity with the tutors and understanding the subjects. It was very straightforward to progress on to the top-up degree. What was the biggest difference between studying at Level 3 and Levels 4 & 5? Being able to adapt and write in a different style and use references accurately and correctly were the most signifi cant challenges. Academic writing is crucial and the use of references was a big difference. Organisation is key when you’re doing an HND and the dissertation is vital.

HE@CRC SPORT (COACHING & SPORTS DEVELOPMENT) Steph Tirrell, 22, former HND Sport (Coaching & Sports Development) student, now studying for BSc (Hons) Applied Sport Science at Loughborough University; EuroHockey gold medallist The friendly and personal approach at CRC helped set me on the right path to obtain a full BSc degree from an internationally recognised sporting institute, and for that I am truly thankful. I’m applying for an MSc course, for jobs at Loughborough Sport and for Graduate Sports Assistant roles in schools. I’d also like to travel abroad to play or coach hockey or cricket in America or Australia. “ The HNC and HND course equipped me with the skills necessary to progress and obtain a BSc (Hons) degree whilst still performing my sport to the highest level possible. I was in the British Colleges National Hockey Squad when I was at CRC and I’m currently a Loughborough cricketer, representing the MCCU and 1st teams, as well as being Club Chair.” Why did you choose to study HE Sport at CRC? I decided initially university wasn’t for me, and therefore opted to stay on at CRC and continue with the Level 4/5 courses after my Level 3. ” What did you like about studying at CRC? I liked the smaller class sizes - they made it easier to approach the lecturers compared to large university lecture theatres. Going on to university was seamless thanks to excellent tutoring whilst on the Level 4/5 courses. I also went on a volunteering trip to Morocco. I am currently fundraising for Meningitis Research Foundation by attempting to scale Mount Kilimanjaro. What was the biggest difference between studying at Level 3 and Levels 4 & 5? The need to be really organised, having to reference everything you did and improve writing style to suit the level of learning.

HE@CRC SPORT (COACHING & SPORTS DEVELOPMENT) Tamara Richards, 22, former HND Sport (Coaching & Sports Development) student, now a lecturer at Cambridge Regional College I work at Cambridge Regional College as a part-time Sports lecturer, as well as teaching swimming and fi tness classes. My next goal is to gain a full-time contract at CRC so that I can make teaching sport my full-time career. I have Level 5 HND in Sport Coaching & Development, and Level 3 and Level 5 teaching qualifi cations. I’m a qualifi ced personal trainer, fi tness instructor, swimming instructor, and I hold the Higher Sports Leadership Award. “ Cambridge Regional College really is a great place to be! I studied sport here for four years from Level 3 to Level 5. I then achieved a teaching qualifi cation and now I work here. However my passion now is fi tness. I teach a range of fi tness classes and enjoy training myself. I’d advise anyone to work hard to achieve your potential.” Why did you choose to study HE Sport at CRC? I chose to do this course at CRC because I was already familiar with the lecturers and the environment and knew it suited me well. I found it fairly easy to progress to employment because the college supported me into teacher-training and gave me a placement which led to a job. ” What did you like about studying at CRC? I loved the fact that class sizes were small and the teachers were brilliant, supporting us all through the course individually. This made me feel like a valued person rather than just another number. What was the biggest difference between studying at Level 3 and Levels 4 & 5? The teaching style was the biggest thing for me as the emphasis is squarely on the learner, plus having to learn new skills such as referencing. My biggest challenge was learning how to reference properly. This takes time but becomes second nature the more you do it. It was a tough course but really benefi cial.
