Wesley United Methodist Church November 2022 Newsletter What’s Inside: Note from Pastor UMM UWF Trustee Scouts, Calendar & More

Note from Pastor Jana 1 We continue remembering our vows and what they mean, Here are the vows we take when we join the church: We vow to faithfully participate in the life and ministries of our local congregation through our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. A couple of months ago, I invited you to be in prayer for our church. Then, last month, I asked you to be present in our church, Let’s add in gifts. Our vows ask us to provide gifts. What do gifts mean in the UMC? While the term "gifts" often brings to mind money, there's much more to it. (But, we will gladly accept those gifts too!) More so, it’s about the spiritual gifts we have to offer. Have you ever taken a spiritual gifts test? Maybe it can help you to understand what gifts you have to offer the church. Do you score high in hospitality? Then, let’s make you a greeter! Do you have an excellent aptitude for music? Then, let’s get you in the choir or rotation to offer those gifts. Great at meeting new people? You can be in charge of outreach. We have to be willing to share our gifts, but we need to connect those gifts to the life of the church. You know that classic children’s song, “This Little Light of Mine” When we have great gifts to share, we cannot hide them under a bushel. No! We need to let it shine. When we all pitch in, the church is better for it. God’s kingdom is better for it as well. So, take some time and be in prayer. Reflect on how you can show up AND offer your gifts. You might think this is such a small thing, but those small things add up and truly make an impact. We know this! We say, small but mighty! When we all offer our gifts, we get mighty things done. In Christ, Pastor Jana

Bingo Recap 2 Bingo Night What a great night! We had 85 or so at our church on October 23rd. Mike Gibson did a great job calling the bingo numbers. We had several winners and more than enough prizes. We had the opportunity to honor our boy scouts. We had gotten a special prize for them. Scout Zayin Basham-won the 2022 Walking Liberty silver dollar. He was very excited. We had two winners for our Blackout Bingo grand prize. Carolyn and Kennedy split the $100. Everyone had a great time and it was done because of so many who stepped up. Thank you to those who brought prizes, helped with setup and cleanup, kitchen volunteers, bingo helpers, and all who contributed. Way to go church! We are looking forward to connecting more with our community. It was a full house!

Missions 4 + FOR CARNELL ELEMENTARY Ingathering is traditionally a time when everyone in our conference comes together to collect food items or relief kits for United Methodist Committee on Relief. In the years past they have had to adapt the mission because of Covid. It’s not just one day in November at the Little Rock Food Bank. We have been challenged to collect food. Since, we have feeding ministries, we will collect for our church. We will record the amount of pounds and financial gifts we get to report to them. During Collectober, churches are encouraged to “one-up” themselves by collecting more food than last year. This year, we will be collecting food for a special mission. We will be collecting items to create thanksgiving baskets for families at Carnall Elementary. Change Jar money will be used for the meat. Thank you for participating in this effort. Advent 5 We will begin with a potluck in the fellowship hall. After, we are finished, we will get to work on decorating. Please plan to be there. “Hanging of the Greens" refers to the practice of adding evergreen plants to the worship space. The symbolism of evergreens points to the unending life of the age to come when Christ returns, the dead are raised, and the righteous enter life in the new creation. Advent will begin Nov. 27th. We will be doing the series “What Can’t Wait.” Note some changes for the season. Dec. 11th - Christmas Cantata at Cavanaugh UMC at 10:45 with a combined choir. Dec. 25th Christmas Day Worship Christmas falls on a Sunday this year. We will have a combined service at 9:00 that day. More details to come. Sund Sml Groups Sund Wip The Sunday morning adult small groups invite you to join them for an advent study “Prepare the Way for the Lord: Advent and the Message of John the Baptist.” Written by Adam Hamilton, this is a 4-week study that explores the Advent themes of John’s life and ministry and includes DVD/video sessions featuring Adam Hamilton. The sessions will be held in the Fellowship Hall following worship services. The first session will be Nov. 27. Contact Clyde or Blanche for more information and to register.

Bible Study, One Council, Worship, & More 6 One Council November 13th 4:00 pm worship Scriptures Wednesdays 11.6.22 Hab. 1:1–4; 2:1–4 11.13.22 2 Thess. 2:1–5, 13–17 11.20.22 Luke 21:5–19 11.27.22 Isaiah 2:1-5, Psalm 122 Trustee Reminder A friendly reminder that the person or persons in charge of a meeting or event are responsible for checking to see that the thermostat is set, water in lavatory's and sinks turned off, lights tuned off and all doors locked. Two times in the last 30-45 days hot water has been running on Saturday in the sink in the mens bathroom by the kitchen. That would indicate that it has been running for several days and nights. Let's be good stewards of our property. Special Called Annual Conference This special session has been called to deal with the following two issues, and is limited to dealing only with these two issues: 1. Voting on various congregations in the ARUMC who are using ¶2553 to disaffiliate. 2. If allowed by the Judicial Council’s upcoming decisions concerning Docket 0522-02, the consideration of legislation to adopt a standard process governing the use of ¶2548.2 for the transfer of churches from the Arkansas Conference to one of the Pan-Methodist or another Evangelical Denomination. This is a heartbreaking time for our denomination. Please pray for all those who will be in attendance. If you have questions or concerns, please talk to Pastor Jana.
