Martha’s Vineyard The Island of By Towns FUN FACTS I Martha’s Vineyard is located seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I We’re just one Island with six small towns, each with their own distinctive personality. I Originally named by the Wampanoag tribe as Noepe, the Island was later named after the daughter of a British explorer in 1602. Although there are no vineyards here, we do have two great microbreweries! I 17,000 of us live here year-round, and that grows to 250,000 in peak season. I The Vineyard is open year-round and there’s fun to be had 12 months of the year! I The Vineyard is roughly nine miles north to south, and 24 miles east to west, approximately 88 square miles total -which is nearly 4 times the size of Manhattan! But not to worry, it’s not as hectic here. I There’s an extensive, year-round public bus system that can easily get you around the entire Island.
