28 Classroom Resources • Everyone needs extra help every once in a while. Professors have office hours or make appointments with students to help students understand lectures, assignments and concepts. Meetings with professors are brief and businesslike. • The syllabus for the class is a guide to what to expect in the class. Be sure to use it to learn about tests, reading assignments and quizzes. • Trine University has a variety of resources to help students succeed academically: - Learning Center - Math Help Sessions - Writing Center - LINK (library) • The Office of Student Success and Retention can also help you locate resources on campus to help you academically. Recognizing Cultural Differences • Students are encouraged to participate in class in the U.S., unlike other cultures. It might be difficult at first, but participating is not only important to your grade, but will also help you practice speaking in English. • In the U.S., women are supposed to have the same opportunities as men. As a result, you might have female professors and classmates. • Discrimination against students and faculty based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability and country of origin is not acceptable and against U.S. law.
