SENIOR SCHOOL Sixth Form Report 2018-19 The Largest Sixth Form in Twenty Years Having said farewell to the Leavers of 2018 who were heading off to carefully chosen and perfectly matched courses and destinations (32% Russell Group universities) we were soon greeting fresh and familiar faces in September. The ranks of the Sixth Form swelled to become the largest in over 20 years. To set the tone, the year began with a day of immersive introductory and team building activities, one in which personal barriers came down and confidences rose. Enrichment through Guest Speakers Recognising the day to day complexities of modern living and relationships we welcomed Dr Manoj Krishna (Human Enquiry Project) who ran a series of thoughtprovoking workshops for the Sixth Form, in which the theme of ‘happiness’ was developed; what it is, the absence of it, where it comes from and where you can get more of it. Further speakers included Mark Huntington from ‘A Star Future’ presented opportunities for further studies internationally; John Levy from Friends of Israel; a delegation from Wolverhampton Palestinian Solidarity Campaign; Alison Graham from Amnesty International; a group 30 of local volunteers from Samaritans delivered inspiring presentations and the dos and don’ts of the private rental sector were highlighted by Fenix Property Services. Many attended the fascinating talk by Old Tettenhallian Nick Jones - BBC political correspondent 80/90s (reported on elsewhere in the magazine). The talk expanded on numerous historical events and meetings with infamous politicians and allowed for well-considered questions from the Sixth Form. All Work and No Play... But it’s not all about A Levels and careers. In order to extend their capabilities Sixth Formers organise and take responsibility for numerous additional academic, social and cultural activities taking place throughout the School, with plenty of opportunities for cross-school engagement through the immersive House system. Sixth Formers raised awareness of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and in the process raised money for the School to join Amnesty International. Meanwhile the Sixth Form Social Committee organised numerous events including a Christmas Party, a black-tie Casino Night, leavers lunch and Prom – to name just a few! Other opportunities pursued by the prefect team during the year included the Peer Mentoring Training Programme, Paired Reading with younger children in the Preparatory School and supportive departmental work though the regular Academic Clinics.
