SENIOR SCHOOL Duke of Edinburgh Report 2019 Choosing to do any level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is a challenge from start to finish. Pupils have to push themselves, physically, mentally and emotionally. It gives them the opportunity to either learn new skills or develop already existing talents – it is entirely up to the individual. It can also open doors into possible career development and is therefore an extremely useful opportunity for anyone who decides to embark on the Duke of Edinburgh journey. At present we have a record number of participants at TC wanting to achieve their bronze certification and hopefully many of these will want to pursue their silver and gold awards thereafter. It was a pleasure seeing these pupils take on the practice expedition, working as a team, learning to navigate and carrying everything they needed including cooking equipment, sleeping bags and tents, and all with a smile on their faces. Rob Ellmore and Andrew Odell Nimrah – Volunteering The volunteering section of DofE is my personal favourite. I volunteered at an Oxfam charity shop which has taught me many life lessons and helped me learn new things which I definitely couldn’t do in a classroom. It has helped me gain confidence and self-esteem, make a difference to my local community, meet new people from a wide age range, find purpose and try things that I never thought I could do. You can really make a difference in someone’s life no matter how big or small the action is. Ben – The Expedition Our 14 mile, 2 day camping expedition at Cannock Chase started out with a great day with the sun on our backs. However, the sun soon became stronger and stronger which made our packs feel heavier and heavier! What started out as a walk had truly become an expedition and a test of both our physical and mental strength. Along the way, we laughed and argued but the most important thing was that we finished. It wasn’t easy but the sense of achievement was immense. Macy - The Physical Choosing to do mountain biking for my Duke of Edinburgh physical was a great idea. Six months of hard work and determination got us through it, and we all came out better for it. It came with many benefits including improving our fitness, confidence, motor skills and social participation. I am very grateful for this experience and would do it again in a heartbeat!
