SENIOR SCHOOL The Virtual Classroom As part of the computer science curriculum, pupils are expected to learn about data representation and how computers process data to create video, audio and interactivity. Pupils had the opportunity to have exclusive access to the Vortex Entertainment Centre, Birmingham and were able to see first-hand how data representation is used in the creation of computer game entertainment and virtual reality (VR) software. Pupils were able to experience and interact with industry-level computer software and technology of a level not normally accessible in schools. Pupils spoke to industry professionals about the workings of virtual machines in regards to hardware and software requirements and were given inspirational advice about careers in computer science and computer game entertainment. Demi Oni, Computer Science Inspired by the Experts Year 7 scientists have enjoyed a plethora of trips this year to engage them in their new science studies. Pupils have explored the classification of animals at Chester Zoo and the breeding programs at the Sea Life Centre. Both visits involved the pupils being taught lessons by experts in their fields and then getting involved. Meanwhile Year 9 discussed careers in science with industry experts at the NEC Big Bang Careers Fair and Year 10 experimented with hands on practical science activities at the Manchester Science Museum. All critical experiences to encourage our next generation of informed scientists. Extended Day with STEM The science department launched STEM as part of the extended day programme, run by Dr Swann, a STEM Ambassador. Pupils entered projects such as Step into the NHS and Sky Rescue Plastic Oceans. Pupils could also solve crime scene investigations with Mrs Hollinshead, by investigating a series of clues and using scientific approaches to narrow down the field of suspects. Budding engineers have developed new skills working with wood.
