SENIOR SCHOOL Soaprize Entrepreneurs Triumph The Tettenhall College ‘Young Entrepreneur’ team qualified for the 2019 area finals held at the University of Wolverhampton and were rewarded with a finalists’ trophy and the trophy for being the company with the best teamwork in the Black Country Area. The Young Enterprise programme is a national competition which gives pupils the chance to experience business and entrepreneurship. This year’s team ‘Soaprize’ came up with the idea of soap that is fun for children, in the hope that this would encourage youngsters to wash their hands more. The unique selling point is that the soap has a surprise in it. While creating the inspirational ‘Soaprize’ products the team overcame challenges of product innovation, marketing and selling, public speaking and how to cope with the complexities of financial accounting. Undoubtedly the most valuable business studies lessons any pupils could ask for. David Groom, Business Studies Creating Drama The Year 10 and 11 GCSE Drama groups have both produced some superb practical drama work during the course of the year. The Year 10s created an original piece of drama for their first unit, and they chose the theme of relationships within families. Tyson Mills, Ben Hemming and Nikhil Gill wrote a powerful play about a teenage boy who was struggling to ‘come out’ to his best friend and then to his father. The play was extremely effective as an exploration of this highly topical issue and the audience were fully involved as the story progressed. Arabella Yardley and Joshua Price worked together to create a play based around the destructive relationship of a couple who met each other via the internet. This was also a compelling exploration of a relevant current issue. The Year 11 group prepared some extracts from ‘DNA’ by Dennis Kelly for their second unit. This is a powerful modern play that follows a group of teenagers who accidentally kill one of their own group. Jacob Small, Ben Alner, Suvraj Pejatta, Georgia Haycock and Jessica Stanton rose to the challenge of this demanding piece and performed their extracts ‘in the round’ to an invited audience who were fully involved in the gripping scenes and monologues. The Year 11 group also enjoyed a day out in London to see ‘The Woman In Black’ by Susan Hill, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt. All were enthralled by this production and acquired valuable material to assist them in writing about live theatre in the written examination. Paul Bullough, Drama 17
