Editors: Katie Corcoran, Susan Campana, Morgan Messenheimer, Meredith Miller Associate Editor/Graphic Design: Joe Pohorence Before the air turns cold, we reflect on the unusually warm summer months at Sandusky Library. In May, we began the final stage of our exterior restoration project with the replacement of the original flat roof. Despite a brief delay caused by a nest of Herring Gulls, the team finished the project before the end of summer. 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. KELLEYS ISLAND BRANCH Monday 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. In June, our Executive Director, Molly Carver, retired after 10 years of service and was nominated for the Ohio Library Council’s Hall of Fame Librarian, an honor she will receive in November because of her outstanding career achievements. Please see our tribute to her on the opposite page. We kicked off our Summer Reading Program, Color Our World, with a travel-inspired event at the beginning of June. Patrons had their photos taken for their passports and set off throughout the library to explore activities across the continents. During the 8-week program, we saw a major increase in participation and completion from previous years. We look forward to continuing this trend with future summer reading programs. In July, our funding was changed from a percentage of the General Revenue Fund to a line-item appropriation in the State Budget ending a funding arrangement for Ohio Libraries that had existed for decades. Also included in the appropriation is the incorporation of funding for other library support agencies that had previously been funded by other means. We will see how these changes will affect Ohio’s libraries in the upcoming months. In August, the Sandusky Library Board of Trustees announced the appointment of our new Executive Director, William Rutger, who is returning to his home library after most recently serving as the Director of Avon Lake Public Library. We look forward to welcoming him in September. Please see a statement from William below. Now as we head into the autumn months, we thank our generous donors included in this issue who keep Sandusky Library a vital source of support to our community whether through the preservation of our historic buildings or through the provision of services and programs. We invite you to take advantage of all we have to offer this fall. KATIE CORCORAN | Interim Director William Rutger Returning to Sandusky Library is both a homecoming and a full-circle moment in my career. I began here as a 16-year-old Page and grew up in the community it serves. My roots -and my heart- have always been in Sandusky. I believe a library should be more than a resource; it should be a destination that inspires learning, sparks connections, and strengthens the community. I’m honored to build on its proud legacy and ensure it remains a vibrant, welcoming place for all.
