My Unforgettable Celebration ─ A Family Concert Guanglin Chinese New Year is at the beginning of spring, so we also call it Spring Festival, which is the most important annual feast for Chinese. On the eve of the Spring Festival in 2017, I invited my classmate X, her husband and a friend, Mr. Y and his family to my home in Mountain View. After we enjoyed the New Year Eve’s dinner together, all our three families held a family concert to celebrate the Spring Festival. First, Mr. Y played the legendary Chinese music, “Butterfly Love" with the violin. He is really a good violinist, and his violin brought us to the scene of the fairy tale. Then Mr. Y (violin), X (violin) and my husband (huqin) performed a string trio of Bach's “Canon” (Fig.1). It is unbelievable that the Chinese instrument huqin can also play western music and can be in good harmony with the violin. No wonder the huqin is also called “the Chinese violin”. To continue the concert, X and her husband sang the Chinese song, “Hulun Buir Grassland”, and I sang a Russian folk song. Finally, all of us - the three families - contributed to the concert a rousing chorus of the Chinese folk song, “Half a Moon Climbs Up” (Fig.2). We were extremely happy enjoying our concert, and satisfied with our unique blend of celebration. I will keep this wonderful memory of our special celebration of 2017 Spring Festival forever. Guanglin is a student in the Intermediate High/ Advanced Low class in the afternoon.
