DEAR FRIENDS OF THE GARDEN, A season of growth at the Garden is the theme of this year’s annual report but it is more than just a theme, it is truly a new attitude. Throughout our 96 acres and 31 specialty gardens growth is evident everywhere most especially in the increased number of memberships which today total a record 5,496! Broadly defined, we categorize our work at the Memphis Botanic Garden in three ways: • Horticultural excellence • Educational opportunities for all • Events that raise both awareness and the revenue needed to sustain our Mission These combine to be our North star and keep us focused on what is important. Importantly and in the interest of transparency to our benefactors, this annual report covers the financial results of our fiscal year ended June 30, 2017. For timeliness, it also includes some of our more current activities such as the recently renovated and reopened Hardin Hall, the Big Bugs at the Garden exhibit (through 12/31/17) and the greatly expanded Holiday Wonders at the Garden display (through 12/30/17). As we look forward into 2018 we envision welcoming another traveling exhibit to our grounds, the completion of a five-year strategic plan, work to enhance and upgrade more of our gardens and facilities and much more! It is your financial and membership support that allows our growth and we ask that you include the Memphis Botanic Garden in your year-end giving. With thanks for your ongoing support and our wishes for a joyous Holiday season and New Year! Sincerely, Vance Lewis Board President Michael D. Allen Executive Director -2- memphisbotanicgarden.com
