LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Longtime Club member Sharron Swanson, who works full time and uses early morning swimming for fitness and job stress relief, brought home a gold and three silver medals from a new senior swim meet in Charlotte County the first Sat in October. It's part of the Florida Senior Games program that our club has been participating in for over four years. See more games info below. Other good news: Several more swimmers have almost reached their 100 mile swim goal. All members know that: • Swimming is one of the best ways to stay or get healthy. • Swimming with others is safer and more fun than alone. • Improving swimming skills helps one to be more efficient in the water, and helps one be ready to rescue a grandchild if ever needed. Come swim with us and get fit. Mondays at 6 pm, Wednesdays at 1 pm, and Saturdays at 10 am at the HFC Pool. The Senior Games are a nationwide program of around 30 sports that includes age group swimming, with distances from 50 to 500 yards. There are two gender and 10 age groups, plus all the events you would find in a high school or YMCA swim meet. Medals are awarded to the top three in each event, plus the top five in each event qualify for the state championships each December. SINGLES CLUB By Maureen Ziegler LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for single residents. The group meets on the first Sunday of each month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. Over 30 people attended the October meeting and discussed future events. Karen Nelson will obtain 12 names for the Senior Orphans Christmas Outreach. The group will provide gifts to each based on their wish list. Donations will be taken but most important, shoppers will be needed. The Woodworkers are having a yard sale November 4 in the Ballroom. Jerry Elmers has paid for a table so that 42 singles can display items they wish to sell. Contact Jerry if you have items to display. The Single Mingle will be held in the Pavilion November 16 from 4 to 6 pm. Volunteers are needed to set up. Deb Kreider will host the Christmas party in her home December 15 at 5:30 pm. Athene has booked reservations at the Jacaranda Hotel in Avon Park on January 4, 2024 for lunch. It will still be decorated for Christmas. If you would like to take part in activities with other singles, attend the meeting on November 5. LA TRAVELERS By Maureen Sim The rally last month was held in Webster, FL at the Sunshine Village Resort. The weather was definitely on our side. Mornings started at 58 degrees and afternoons were in the low 80s. Coffees were held each morning and many newer members found that other members were from the same general areas in other states. The opening event was the world famous Webster Flea Market and Antique Sale covering acres of ‘’bargains and rare finds.” Participants also toured Weeki Wachee Springs and the Chase Wild Animal Rescue-with hands on experiences such as petting and playing with lemurs. Shopping was very interesting at the 150 year old Rich Loam General Store complete with Amish products. Several folks also visited the Florida National Veterans Cemetery in Bushnell — as serene as Arlington. Some enjoyed a 20 mile bike ride or a water aerobics class. Daily socials were held with BYOD and snacks followed by a catered dinner or pizza night. We laughed heartily at Lucille Ball and Robin Williams comedies of their versions of RVing and held a game night with LCR and Bingo with lots of prizes. Next Rally in Punta Gorda complete with the air show! On November 14, former and current members of the LA Travelers will gather to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the founding of this FMCA Chapter. Watch for emails with more details.
