Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer Curbing work on Ventana Lane is The Wood Stork is a species that has made a successful comeback in Florida. As a year-round resident at Lake Ashton, this large wading bird resembles a vulture in that it has no feathers on its head. The black flight feathers have an iridescent green that shines brilliantly in the Florida sun. It wades with its bill in the water partly open to snatch up fish, aquatic insects, snakes, frogs, rodents, turtles and even baby alligators for a nutritious meal. They are a little comical looking when resting on the ground with their pink toes extended forward and their knees bent in the wrong direction. If you consider that their legs are like our arms then this posture makes sense. This is the only native stork species in North America and it doesn't wander far from Florida. With broad wings they can be observed circling high above with vultures, eagles and Anhingas.
